COVID-19 - READ THE RULES BEFORE REPLYING

Essential workers are required by our county to wear masks. There was a recent ordinance for the general public to also wear masks if they come within 6 feet of a person that are not from the same household. Of course some of them at times don’t. That’s a bs part. I have plenty of frequent elderly customers in my store. Or those who have asthma and are immunocompromised.

Same policy here on base.  100% mask mandatory when one can't keep six feet apart.  On top of disinfecting touch surfaces far more than usually occurs during flu/cold season for the bases (we get briefings on that along with being told to wash hands more often).  Also, what is helping the bases to keep full ops since the beginning:  if someone pops positive, immediate quarantine for 14+ days, and full contact tracing and testing of folks that came in contact with the individual.  Along with a lot of travel restrictions.

The base I work on is doing a very slow re-opening phase, each phase lasting two weeks, and re-checking to make sure there is no new cases popping up (if a case shows up, a restart on the phase counter).  Though, a lot of stuff, like PT, has been pushed into September and October to be on the safe side.

I know this isn't directly tech related, but as an Amerasian person that suffered from Kawasaki disease as a child I wanted to alert folks to a disease that isn't recognized in many Western hospitals.  Living on an air base in Japan as a child the Western  doctors failed to recognize my disease until a doctor with an Asian child who suffered the same immediately told my parents to take me to a Japanese hospital for treatment.  When I was afflicted I was older than the average patient and as it exists now it may inflict young adults.  It's important to recognize early because it can damage the heart the longer it goes untreated and the disease will kill (my heart was damaged).  From my reading the disease is usually found in Japanese and Korean children, but from what I understand all Asian children are more susceptible.  Linus' children makes me feel that this is the link to tech, however, all parents should know about it.

I don't have any quotes from the stories I've linked and will cobble some together if I'm forced to.  My goal here is to alert parents to a disease that will often go un-diagnosed by Western doctors as it was in my case.

The symptoms of Kawasaki disease or Kawasaki-like are nothing close to the same as COVID.  This should not have been merged.

I was supposed to join the Air Force when I was 22 but health issues prevented me from doing so. Had a near perfect score on the ASVAB and I hired a personal trainer to get in top shape for boot camp. It does sound safer to be on a base right now. Preferably on a base in a different country. At this point I worked with the public for five months during this pandemic and now on top of that we face the threat of more distress and pain from looters. Some of my stores have boarded up. And closed early because of continuous curfews.

Took my vacation just in time. High anxiety doesn’t mix well with two potential threats at the same time.

A peer-reviewed study (mostly from UC Berkeley researchers) estimates that lockdown measures in six countries (China, France, Iran, Italy, South Korea and the US) prevented or delayed 62 million infections.  Now, even if you take the more optimistic claims of an 0.4 percent death rate, that means saving 248,000 lives... and if you look at more conservative figures, that's hundreds of thousands more.  That's not including the millions that would have been hospitalized and risked permanent damage.

China skews the figures somewhat due to its population, to be sure, but this indicates that sufficiently long and strict lockdown measures work.  So much for the "let's kill the old people so I can go to the mall" types.

@Commodus what I don't get with this study is, the actual infection was below the projected true. I did not see a control group in this study, a break down on projected to actual from a country that did not lock down. Scientifically speaking that would be the equivalent of a drug company testing a new medication with out a control group of people using a placebo and saying their drug had a X% success rate, with out a control to compare it to how can they state for sure that the policies are indeed the true cause of the numbers being below the projections?

With all sincerity, I would appreciate it if you could square that up for me.

Scholars still regurgitate their figures?

Quebec has more deaths than some country with a billion citizens. Something's up.

I'm not sure how well a control group would work in this case.  These countries were chosen in no small part due to the scale of their infections; even a country with relatively high infection rate would have far fewer overall infections.

It's also important to remember that some countries won't be entirely forthright about their figures if they've had either short lockdowns or none at all.  Russia, for instance, has been reluctant to admit that its infections are as bad as they are, and is lifting restrictions even though there are still thousands of new cases every day.  The country says the relatively low deaths are due to high testing numbers, but this is also Putin's Russia we're talking about -- it routinely suppresses failures.
