Home Depot is now selling power tools that require activation at checkout for them to work

To combat themselves from capitalists worst nightmare: decreased profits due to stolen merchandise, Home Depot is now adding microchips to popular power tools together with manufacturers which render the devices completely useless unless activated at checkout via bluetooth when purchased.

The main reason apparently for this move has been organized theft rings which target high value power tools due to their resale value being high.

A chip is inserted into power tools of major brands like DeWalt and Milwaukee brand tools, similar to how gift cards need to be scanned and paid for at a store to activate. Once the tools are paid for, the store will use Bluetooth technology to activate the tool.

 

My thoughts

 

I actually support this idea completely as long as the activation is permanent, which it seems to be as it's one-time thing done at checkout with bluetooth.. 
But as techie I also understand:  Countdown to this being hacked in 3... 2... 

In worst case it's simply a matter of using  a Bluetooth sniffer, buying one power tool and recording deactivation and pray they implemented it poorly. 

Either way, this'll give hackers something.. interesting to get into all of sudden.

Foot in the door for tools as a subscription, requiring authentication over and over for a fee.

 

Easily hackable, widely available technology that a theft ring will be trying their hardest to circumvent. And will most likely succeed.

 

Added cost due to additional electronics.

I’m genuinely curious how things like this happen. Because anyone with more than 4 brain cells knows this won’t do anything and just adds extra cost and complexity for no reason. Is it a liability thing? Like a higher up said we need to do something so they just do this to satisfy that or what?

Wait till these make it to mine sites. Chip breaks? Throw the whole thing out. Yes we stop theft, but here's more e waste!

Remind me in a few months and I can tell you how it works out. Looks like Milwaukee is one of them. Every impact, hilti, sawzall, etc on site and underground is a Milwaukee. 

I wonder if this messes with our supply chain. Let's say we buy enough(we do now) that it comes from a distributer and not a brick and mortar store. Can they activate them? Do we get a tool for out here to activate them?

Whole point of solid state chips is they have no regard to vibrations. It's literally why we have SSD's over HDD's. They are just chips and you can basically throw them at the wall and they'll just work.

true, but vibration can cause solder to break, and dust is never a good thing in electronics. can't count how many car keys and phones my dusty job cost me, despite paying attention not to get them too dusty while still needing them at a worksite

This is a tough one, if they are really dealing with a lot of theft they should try and do something else beside chip these tools. My tools are beaten up, all I need is one of these stupid chips to get damaged and my tools don't work any more.

I would imagine the "activation" would be permanently recorded using an eFuse of sort.

I am not usually for adding electronics to things that don't need it. However this isn't something that is going to be controlled by some micro transactions that they will just disable when your monthly subscription runs out. This is a one time activation that's no different than security tags on clothes or activating a gift card. Theft is on the rise accross the country especially in major cities so this is very much needed.

ALL li-ion powered devices have some sort of circuitry inside because it's needed for voltage control and charging. Either in battery pack or the device itself. Or both.

from taking apart and repairing these....so they are adding a small board to it...great will only take about 15 min to remove board and connect like normal

True, but its an extra step that costs time and therefore money. And tbh some skill of nondestructivly tearing the thing apart, removing the part so it still works and the putting it all back together. The quick money is gone by that point. And I can imagine as others said already too that this is integrated on one of the needed circuit boards.
