10 Years of the LTT Forum

The LTT Forum is now 10 years old! What started out as an experiment hosted in Linus's garage has now become a thriving community of tech enthusiasts, with some pretty impressive numbers, thanks in no small part to all of you!

 

The forum has come a long way from the incredibly unstable VBulletin 5 beta that we started out with in 2013, and I hope you will agree that it looks far better today than it did back then:

 

The forum exists because of its awesome community. As a small way of giving back, we're going to give away some 1 year Gold Contributor memberships, which give you Floatplane access, based on recent activity on the forum. The giveaway criteria are:

• 5 will be randomly assigned to the authors of posts made in the past 3 months (so your chance of winning is proportional to the number of posts you have made in the past 3 months), to give something back to everyone that makes this community awesome. Posts removed by a moderator, and posts in Test Posts, do not qualify.
• 10 will be randomly assigned to members who joined the forum in or before 2015 and have made at least one post on the forum in the past 3 months, to thank our most loyal members.
• 5 will be given to the members with the most posts that were marked as the best answer in the past 3 months, to say thanks to the members that give the most back to the community. Posts where a member marked their own post as best answer are excluded.

Winners will be drawn later this week, and notified via PM by me. The full list of winners will be published here once all winners have accepted their prize.

Ts&Cs:

1. Max one prize per user
2. If a winner already has a Gold Contributor subscription, they will get 1 year free starting from their next billing period
3. Current moderators and administrators, and employees of LMG or its subsidiaries, are not eligible
4. The giveaways will be drawn in the order listed. If an ineligible user is drawn (per points 1 and 3 above), an additional winner will be drawn.
5. Winners will have 7 days from being notified via PM to accept the prize (by replying to the PM), otherwise their prize will be redrawn under the same rules.
6. No cash value, non-transferrable, run at our own discretion, etc. Please don't get mad if you don't win.
7. "Past 3 months" means between 00:00 on 01 October 2022 and 23:59 on 31 December 2022 inclusive, all UTC (so it's too late to try and game the system now).
8. "In or before 2015" means the "Joined" field on the account is before 00:00 UTC on 01 January 2016.

To celebrate the 10 year anniversary it might be fun to change the theme back to that old theme for a day or so. The modern theme is 1000x better, but as long as it's not too much effort it might be a fun trip down memory lane, in the same vein as the April Fools day changing the font to Comic Sans. Could be completely off base for this, but figured it might be fun. 

 

Anyway, congrats to the staff and everything for keeping this afloat for 10 years. It's a great place to hang out and figure stuff out. 

 

EDIT: Just noticed the banner update with the ol' school logo. That's probably a happy medium for keeping the forum usable but actually usable unlike the old theme but still celebrating the anniversary. It was probably like that before I made this post and I just didn't notice.

It would be cool but VBulletin is a completely different piece of forum software. Unless someone has made a theme for IPB that looks like VBulletin, it's not really viable.

Wow 10 years! I am extremely happy for this milestone... so much it literally resurrected me apparently xD

 

While I cannot be as active as I once were around I've had a great experiences and this place has its little room in my heart so I can suffer of nostalgia time to time hehehe~ hope the celebrations are all in good cheer!

Wow, time flies. The forum was only 3 years old when I first started actively reading tech news posts, and I originally joined at the end of 2016. I took a break for a couple years, but this place is still just as active and helpful as it was back then. I'm glad that it's lasted this long, and I'm glad that the team running the forum does such a great job keeping it going. Looking forward to the future!

It's crazy to think that I've been watching the channel for nearly 9 years, and been on the forum for just over 6.

 

Time really does fly. I still remember the first few LTT videos I watched from searching "how to build a computer" on YouTube back in 2014. What's crazier is seeing how far technology has come since then. I've been in the scene long enough to remember when you could buy a 128GB SSD for the same price as a 1TB SSD nowadays.

 

The channel and company growth has been insane, too. LMG has come a long way from the kitchen set most of us know and love.

It's crazy to think of the days when Linus was still working at NCIX. I remember the live streams were also hosted in Linus's garage, even during winter lol.

I started viewing LTT in late 2013 - same year the forums went online,

It took me 6 years to open an account but late is better than never

 

The forums are great, great community with a lot of knowledgeable and helpful people,

and the conversations are interesting and fun - one of the best online communities ever! (said in a true early 2010s tone )

 

In 2011 when i started building PCs Linus Tech Tips was not that popular (Worldwide at least),

But as i said before late is better than never

 

At the time (2011) i built a PC with the following specs:

CPU: Intel Core i3 2100

RAM: 4GB+2GB Kingston ValueRAM D3N9 1333MHz CL9

GPU: SAPPHIRE RADEON HD 6750 1GB GDDR5

CPU cooler: Some Zalman flower cooler

Optical drive: Some cheap and slow one from LG.

Case + PSU combo: 3Cott Mid 2017 + NEOTEC 500W (Cheap crap i ordered from Russia)

 

The case i had:

 

Playing Battlefield 3, Batman Arkham City, NFS Hot Pursuit... - I was having a blast.

Joined Week One. Part of the IPB4 Alpha/Beta Testers 2015-16. Moderator since 2019 (asked twice before accepting). Signature been same for almost whole time. Avatar changed 2020.

Happy 10 year anniversary! This forum has been a huge help. I came here 6+ years ago not knowing anything about PC stuff and while I'm still not an expert, I know I can always count on the kind people on this forum.

LTT was basically my primary education in electronics throughout my life. I used to just sit on the LTT forum in class all day and answer questions lmao

 

I think the real heros are people like @Lays @MageTank They personally spent a shit load of time teaching me hyper specifics of overclocking. To think I was just a teenager at the time and these people were dedicating hours to provide screenshots, replies, and just rich knowledge you only get from doing the shit yourself is absolutely invaluable and is a great show as of what a forum provides to a community. 

 

Thank you LTT for keeping the forum up all these years and thanks to the core members who still help others day after day for nothing other than shared passions.
