Well with the latest news on nvidia being willing to gimp their GeForce cards to make miners buy their mining cards. I think I will be sticking with team red for now on. I’m just hoping they don’t end up affecting folding at home.

This is only for the upcoming RTX 3060. All other cards are unaffected and I dont believe it's enableable with a driver update for other cards either.

Makes sense, kinda sucks but I guess there aren't many other solutions to prevent all cards going to miners...

 

A friend of mine with industry contacts recently told me most of the cards don't even make it to store shelves just because miners contact all distributors and retailers and offer to buy any stock they get 50% above retail price...

Update:

This is an interesting response.  Either they've actually found a way to only hamper specific mining calculations....they THINK they've found that and some other app will probably prove them wrong...or they're basically app blacklisting.

 

Especially if the last, but if either of the later, it should be worked around rather quickly by the mining community.

It looks like they're trying to "detect" mining and reducing performance based on that.

I'm still waiting for the Linux Nvidia Prime driver issues to get sorted out to re-enable clock, power, and fan controls. As far as I can tell it's still busted with laptop users still having issue.

Anyone know if this is just an Intel specific problem? I have a spare AMD CPU (200GE) and I could get a board for it cheaply enough, but I don't want to bother if it's still going to be a problem with an AMD CPU the same way it is with an Intel CPU. Really, I wish Nvidia would step away from that stupid coolbits thing and just make it as easy as it is in Windows.

Well while I wait I've got the P106 (FoldyPuff Jr) mining. At the very worst case it'll make me a profit of $60 in a month. I paid $90 for the card last year in April so I'll get back my purchase price on the card in about 90 days at the worst estimates for power and electric costs, average case 30 days, if I bother to tinker with power limits and clock speeds manually probably can do better than that.

The 2021 Snowpocalypse is finally rolling to a close in my neck of the woods. Water is finally coming back online, and I finally got to take a shower last night. Even then, I did not stop folding (except when the power went out).

Seeing as our production is starting to wane and production in general for most teams is also following the same trend how about another Folding Month? Perhaps we could reach out to LTT and see if they can get AIB partners to throw in a few scarce GPUs to incentivize people?

 

Perfect time for it in the Northern hemishphere and getting cooler in the Southern as well.

As much as I love your enthusiasms I really can't bring myself to do a month more than once a year honestly. 

 

Not going to lie, I like the fact that they are yearly. There will be at least this sprint, the traditional summer sprint, and folding month this year. I'm also presuming @Ithanulwill be getting us involved in the Pent this year again. So there are a few DC events planned so far.

The team is starting to shape up and I'm looking to have a group chat with them via PMs over the next day or so. After that we will work out specific dates and the like and get an event thread up asap.
