(Complete) Woody, mATX Threadripper!

alright, so this is gonna be the start of the buildlog i'm doing to switch my system from it's current config to AMDs Threadripper platform.

 

I'm doing this because my motherboard died sadly. I was in the process of swapping the CPU for a 2690V2 when i put in a little too much force and ended up breaking one of the chokes on the VRMs when my screwdriver slipped. It's the middle one on the picture below.

Luckily Asrock just recently released the X399M Taichi board, which makes this as good of a time as any to make the plunge! Lesson learned i guess, when i get to installing the Threadripper slow and steady is gonna be the way to go :P

Just look at this board tough! If i ever got a tech-boner from something it has got to be this thing. so much stuff crammed on so little space!

First things first, right now my setup looks like this:

which is really just a heartbreaking thing to see if i'm honest. this rig was made to crunch numbers in Folding@Home, not sit still disassembled on my desk.

Sadly i won't be able to really get going with this untill later on this month when my paycheck comes. I was not prepared to make the switch this early, so i can only buy the motherboard right now.

 

speaking of which, lets make a to do list. i really only need to swap out the RAM, motherboard and CPU. everything else in the system is ready to go really. I'll also need to swap out the X99 edition CPU block for a TR4 model.

Emm, why are you going with a 1900X when it's basically the same thing as the 1800X, just on another platform? Any specific reason you need to be on X399?

I have a few reasons I'm going with the 1900x

1- I'm short on cash and it's a good entry into x399

2- I can get a good deal from someone on a combo with the chip and RAM

3- the Upgradepath is awesome

4- massive amounts of PCI lanes for my GPU and any SSDs I add in the motherboards three M.2 slots

Fair enough. You're probably experienced enough to not really need this advice but it can be better to just save up for the better options right now since next time you upgrade may be when a new and more flashy platform has come out. Anyways good luck!

Yeah the sensible thing would be to save up a little and go with the higher end one, tough that would require waiting even longer and I don't think I can muster up the patience for that :P

Meh, disappointed it's not actually in a shoebox. 

 

I am crazy in love with the InWin case though and also consider it for my next build :P

Lol yeah the name is in reference to my first self build, which was the size of roughly a shoebox. It has gotten a bit bigger over the years but the name stuck :P

 

The case is amazing indeed. A few quirks when building in this tough:

 

The front airflow is absolutely terrible. Get super high pressure fans for that! Also, my evga PSU is just a bit too long to be installed normally in this case. So I had to disassemble the drive cage to fit it in.

 

Apart from those things building in this case is a breeze!

Right, so here's a small update. 

 

I decided to switch from the planned 4x4 GB low profile ram to 2x8 GB dominate Platinum for a couple of reasons:

1) it looks so much better

2) it was actually cheaper

3) it gives me two open dimm slots to expand to 32GB if I want to.

 

So yeah, they are ordered and on their way. More updates as stuff happens, which should be pretty quickly now as payday has nearly come! :D

updates! I just received the RAM. I gotta be honest, stepping down from 32 to 16 GB is feeling kinda weird, but the jump from DDR3 1866 to DDR4 3000 should make up for it. Plus, I still have 2 DIMM slots free when I install this, so upping the size shouldn't be a problem when I inevitably do it in the future ;)

I also decided on the coolant I'll be using. I ran pastel fluid before, which left lots of grot in the components. After that I ran EK's cryofeul, but even that left some residue. So now I'm just going to run demiwater. 2 bottles for cleaning my loop and components, and 1 bottle for filling the loop.

Tomorrow I'll receive the Threadripper (wooo!) And after that the wait is on the CPU/GPU blocks, and the motherboard. 

I had to order the Mobo from Newegg, since I couldn't buy it anywhere else in my country. (The Netherlands) so I think it might take a while for it to arrive. 

 

So that's about it for now. More as parts come rolling in!

The mailman came by today, wih tons of good stuff! 

first, i got the EKWB Threadripper CPU block. It looks amazing, and the coldplate is massive. I might switch out the top for my full nickel one from my X99 Supremacy, but i'm not sure yet. The whole build is going to be black/grey, so maybe the nickel block is going to stand out too much?

This thing, oh man it's heavy. it's probably 3 times the physical size of my old CPU, which already was a hefty Xeon.

also, unpacking was a treat. They really got the experience of opening something special right with this one!

I love the aggressive naming as well. It might be a bit tacky, but you can't deny it sounds pretty cool. ;)

Right, so today was a pretty huge day for this build. It is up and running now, but it really isn't complete just yet. That might sound a bit contradictory, but it'll be clear lateron in this post.

 

So first things first, the Motherboard arrived! It was a long journey to my doorstep, but FedEx got it done within 3 days, which is mindblowing to me. It started it's journey in California, and now it's here in The Netherlands. That's a lot of miles to cover in just shy of three days! :o

 

Anyway, this board. Oh boy, this thing is impressive. 3 M.2 slots, 3 X16 PCIe and that massive TR4 socket and 4 DIMM slots somehow packed into the mATX formfactor. They guys that designed this deserve a raise!

anyway, in go the CPU, RAM and the waterblock. i'm already digging the monochrome look. 

 

i originally intended to have the CPU block fittings oriented like the pic below, but quickly found out that the reservoir would interfere with the top one, so i had to lower that one by taking out the extender fitting, and because now the tubes couldn't clear the RAM it had to be routed a little different. all of this also means the 120mm rad needs to be oriented upside-down, but to be honest i don;t mind the look.

obviously this is not done. the front rad isn't even in the loop yet, just like the GPU, which definitely needs some water!

sadly i won't be getting the GPU block untill next week. so untill then this is how she stands.

Alright, here's the final update of this re-buildlog.

i finally got in the last few parts. So that's a GPU block, and also a temp sensor and display readout.

i also got these, since somehow my bottom Vardar fan kept dying on me.

i guess it's because of the close proximity to the GPU. (dispite how it may look, they are actually not touching!) but i'm hoping the Noctua NF-F12 Chromax are a little more durable. it's sad tough, i always liked the look of the Vardars, and imo EKWB should be better than this.

 

anyway, now on to the nice things: is there anything better than a fresh water-cooled GPU? 

i've had it on the stock cooler for a while now, and that thing can get so obnoxiously loud! :P i can't wait to be able to hear myself think again when i'm gaming or doing something load-intensive.

after a while of getting my hands jammed in the tiny amounts of space i left for myself i finally got the loop together!

i like how clean this one looks, but i loved the parallel loop i had in here on my old X79 setup. i dunno tough, if anything, this should have better airflow :P

also, going serial means i have equal flow over my components, and that's always a plus.

so that's it! buildolog complete.

 

all in all i definitely love the outcome. a clean, monochrome build that isn't too flashy or anything, but definitely gets the job done and enters me onto a great upgradepath. 

i especially like the temp-readout in the 3.5"bay. it's just a gimmick ofcourse, but it should be a nice little quick-check when overclocking or something, since i put it in the hottest part of my loop, right before the water from my GPU enters the 240 rad.

so yeah, thanks for reading, and i'll see you guys when i inevitably want to change something again :P

i added some things to the system, so i guess it's time for an update post in here.

since the last post i added the following:

 

Corsair Dominator PlatinumSpecial Edition contrast in a 2 by 8 Gig config.

a FE GTX 1070 to crunch numbers harder! (getting about 2M PPD now F@H)

also a 512Gig M.2 SSD, tough it is positioned in the only SATA M.2 slot i have, which is behind the pump. so you can't really see it properly.

added some things again! 

 

so with the 1070 in and everything that could be tweaked OC'd to the breaking point, this thing got quite hot.

i basically had two options: 

- get a new case with better airflow

- mod my current case for more airflow.

 

i think you can guess what route i went with ;)

 

so first things first, i drew the outline of what i wanted to cut, and i got the dremel out.

this didn't really go as planned tough. the cutting disks i had got chewed up like biscuits when i tried cutting through the 1.2mm steel of the InWin 301.

case buildquality was top notch tough!

 

in the end i just grabbed the angle grinder. the surface finish really wasn't all that pretty after i cut through it, and i initially really didn't want to paint anything. i really did need something to cover up the ugly edges and scarred paint now tough.

holes have been made!

 

i really, really didn;t feel like repainting the case. just because i knew i could never get the surface finish good enough with the stuff i had on hands, and because that would mean disassembling and sanding the entire case itself! 

i found a very cool substitute tough! i found this wrap online, that is basically just wood fineer but on a thinner sheet. it feels like wood when you run your hands over it, like you can feel the grain.

i ended up wrapping the case with this stuff.

which ended up looking much better than i anticipated! so i wrapped a few more things in the system with this stuff aswell.
