Youtube forced to step in.

So apparently things went so bad during a live stream that youtube had to come in.

TL;DR: House Judiciary Committee hearing was being broadcasting on youtube by other news networks, a lot of bad apples thought it was a good idea to write hate speech in comments during the stream. Youtube forced to handle the situation by disabling live comments.

You would think that people would at least have some common senses but thats out the window. Now the question is why didn't youtube do anything to curb this from happening.

official stuff like that should have comments disabled to begin with if I'm honest. People will say stupid things at every opportunity.

and as far as free speech goes.. yes. but there are definitely far more effective ways to carry our your freedom of speech than blasting comments on a youtube livestream.

If you want to provide a livestream of a government event, just do a video stream, just like C-SPAN. Comment about it on Twitter like a normal person.

Im kinda on the fence with this one, yt didnt need to step in, who the fuck cares if people write offensive\provocative shit, this is nothing new to any1 who has been on the internet for an extended period of time, its human nature and its way easier to control it then to curb it. Turning comments off is stupid, if spam is a problem - turn slow mode on, make a system to detect same messages being spammed from different accs. The framing of this all wants me to pull out my tinfoil hat

 

I just noticed that the chats were unmoderated... Feels like they are saying that not only there was no mods, there was even no filters. What did they expect?! Its sometimes hard to have a proper discussion on small moderated twitch channel and this is youtube...

The system isn't set up for that. I'm not even sure you can have twitch-style mods on youtube livestream chats. All it takes is a "controversial" livestream with a big enough audience and you'll get antisemitism and other such bs. This isn't the first nor the last time this will happen, it's just the first case of such a high visibility stream being hit. Automated filters don't work because antisemites can just switch to dog whistles, and if those are blocked they can invent new ones. The only solution is active human moderation, which youtube isn't willing to do (and would probably be beyond their capabilities if they were to do it on every large stream).

Just because it's considered normal on the internet that doesn't mean it's ok. Maybe there's no solution, but ignoring it won't do any good. Moderation does help, this forum is pretty free from that nonsense for example.

Court house analogy is kinda meh, youtube is pretty much a public square. And im of the opinion that you can say whatever the fuck you want, <badwords> or whatever, unless you directly invite action and are prepared to deal with the consequances, be it social isolation, physical confrontation or whatever.

On the other hand, this is a problem in the sense that its spam and its just making the converstaion, which actually happens in those chats and is quite interesting, sometimes, impossible. From this angle i can see that its better with no chat then with such chat, but still filters and moderation solve the problem

sure but this is not the public square, there is not much political talk either, youtube, twitter etc are the modern town square, and if we dont want to end in a civil war we should tread very carefully, it doesn't take much to endup like the uk where people are being arrested for their opinions, and even jokes, and they want even more laws on "offensive content"

Also can someone explain me why people still hate jews? Anti Semitism?

lol discrimination in africa against any other races  is pretty astonishing, nothing like people complain about inside the west,

People hate other people, period.  Mostly, its hate-light, just something to make themselves feel better, sometimes its generalized grievances towards a visible chunk of responsible people. Israel did its fair share of shit, i can see how people can trasfer hate, created by those actions, towards jews as a whole. Some people just hate humanity, to each its own)

Oh, and jews are just the most visible group since ww2, creation of isreal, aparteid, wars etc. And it all stems from hatred towards gypsies, oldschool jews were often confused with them, since they share alot of ancestry

Because it's a group of people. It's easier to sling hate towards groups of people than individuals. Also, Hitler; the animosity towards Jews wasn't what it is now before Hitler. The thing is, once people are taught to hate something, they'll often cling to the hate completely irrationally and refuse to let go even if it was 100% conclusively proven that their hatred is unjustified.

This is equivalent to bullying, which does not go away by "learning to ignore things". I think it's these people who need to learn to not be fucking sociopaths. Antisemitism and racism in general is not "poking other people for fun". Do it enough and it has real, tangible social consequences which the US has been a great example of for the last few hundred years. It only gets better if you make it very clear that racists are not welcome in regular society nor on the public internet.

 

It's not "just trolling", that's what they want you to think so you'll ignore them. If you take a trip on the *chans (not that I recommend it) they explain very clearly what this is about.

I don't think we can blame it on the white "race" - it's more so a part of modern western society. You are correct that this phenomenon is less common in other regions, though there are major exceptions like Ruanda (still, arguably a situation that was caused by European intervention way-back-when).

 

It's also a relatively recent thing - the ancient Romans, for instance, didn't care about ethnicity at all (they had other flaws, but still).

My problem with these guys on moderation stepping in on a tech platform is the definition differences when it comes to blocking a said "hate" speech , you guys know what it is , certain titles are deliberately excused like its nothing & the others are stamped as bad when in reality the intentions were even in weight but differ in their own political views, to them it seems different , that's poor judgement & pseudo enthusiasm thrown across this . but expected. eitherways , what did you expect? non-moderated chat is sure to be uncivilized in one way or the other.
