1+2+3 = 24? On iOS 11 it does

vanished

Source: https://qz.com/1114019/if-you-type-123-into-your-apple-iphones-calculator-on-ios-11-you-probably-wont-get-6-aapl/

So apparently the new version of the calculator app in iOS 11 has an issue with typing too fast.

Quote

According to a group of eagle-eyed iPhone users on Reddit who spotted the issue, it seems to be because of a new animation in the calculator app, where a button briefly fades to white when you press it. The result is that if you press an operator button (i.e., the plus sign) before the short animation finishes, the app ignores it. So, 1 + 2 + 3 accidentally gets read as 1 + 23.

This is just laughable.  This is beyond a "bug", or even a design flaw, this is just inexcusable.  Even an inexperienced comp-sci student should be capable of avoiding an issue like this.  To see this kind of thing from what supposedly is a world-class software and hardware company just boggles the mind.

I can't imagine anyone coming up with a valid one.  Even a small amount of testing should have revealed this relatively easy to reproduce issue, and that's ignoring the fact it shouldn't exist in the first place.  Rendering animations and taking input should not be able to jam each other... this is really basic stuff as anyone who has programmed at even a slightly sophisticated level knows.

So does this only happen with this combination, or any number and operation will have this issue? I agree the animation should be minimum to none. I find this issue not only in calculator but other situations as well. when i try to open an app and do sth quickly, it wont register becuz of the animation doesnt finish, not the phone is lag.

But to be fair this will only happen if you are doing single digit calculation, which you should be smart enough to do it by ur brain not a calculator.

Presumably it would be any calculation.  And the issue isn't the length of the animation, it's that somehow they managed to write it in a way where, presumably, the animation is rendered in the same thread that takes input from the user so one action must complete before another begins.  This is beyond amateur... -_-

ic. this is why. so this issue shouldve been found so much earlier. like other said a 5s has this issue, my 6 plus has this issue and now the new iphone also. they didnt change this for a good 4 generations. And as i said, it doesnt appear in calculator only, it happens to me all the time when i try to use the phone fast.

Is it an inexcusable bug?  Hell yeah.  Fix it, Apple.  But it's definitely funny to see some people twisting themselves into hysterics, as if this is some kind of company-ending flaw.  No, it's not.  Apple will fix it; people will move on.

Well it's in the latest version of IOS regardless of the hardware gen so it's a new issue, not like it's something that's been around forever unnoticed.

I don't think anyone really thinks this will seriously impact Apple in any meaningful way in the long term, nor is anyone "twisting themselves into hysterics" :P

But it does make you think, if they can mess up something this simple, what else is lurking under the hood... ?

no, iOS 11 was more recent, it launched hand-in-hand with the recent iPHone 8 iirc, which was in September, well after July.
