Intel offering AI software to bleep out gamer words

Intel announced Bleep, a new AI-powered tool that it hopes will cut down on the amount of toxicity gamers have to experience in voice chat. According to Intel, the app “uses AI to detect and redact audio based on user preferences.” The filter works on incoming audio, acting as an additional user-controlled layer of moderation on top of what a platform or service already offers.

Bleep has been in the works for a couple of years now — PCMag notes that Intel talked about this initiative way back at GDC 2019 — and it’s working with AI moderation specialists Spirit AI on the software. But moderating online spaces using artificial intelligence is no easy feat as platforms like Facebook and YouTube have shown. Although automated systems can identify straightforwardly offensive words, they often fail to consider the context and nuance of certain insults and threats. Online toxicity comes in many, constantly evolving forms that can be difficult for even the most advanced AI moderation systems to spot.

I have my doubts about how well the software will work. Like if I say to someone "great play you are the shit" will that get filtered out and they think I was insulting them? Toxicity in games is definitely a problem but I'm not sure this is the solution. Also some of these filters are for concepts that are a lot more abstract than I think the AI would be able to understand. 

Someone also pointed out that this would be nice for streamers if they want to bring on guests or have TTS donations enabled as an extra layer of security.

If you are of the mind to be offended by swearing then surely you will be offended by a bleep which is obviously covering it up, as well?

 

As for the things which are genuinely problematic - racial slurs and the like - there are surely some who will think the option for people to effectively "turn it off" gives them license to be as offensive as they like, which would be a backwards step for sure.

 

I feel like this creates more problems than it solves.

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

I wonder if it would be reliable enough for twitch streamers to use without worrying about stream snipers trying to get them banned by hot mic'ing offensive things in game.

The implication of the post seems to be that it will operate on the client side and each individual viewer will choose what to bleep, so I can't see how it would be possible to ban streamers based upon it

Definitely not, as with any filter there's always a way to circumvent it in some way, and I highly doubt that Intel would have bother with multilingual support so for example someone could just end up saying anti semitic stuff in German. And as with any voice recognition program, if you have a thick accent it probably won't recognize the words properly.

Probably not initially, you know how it is with this sort of thing. 1st generation implementations are allways a little janky. Usually takes a while before it gets enough bugs squashed to be reliable.

 

That said nice to see this. if it was being pushed as some kind of mandatory filter in all voice chat, yeah i'd be unhappy. But voluntarily, thats fine.

I have my doubts about how well the software will work. Like if I say to someone "great play you are the shit" will that get filtered out and they think I was insulting them? Toxicity in games is definitely a problem but I'm not sure this is the solution. Also some of these filters are for concepts that are a lot more abstract than I think the AI would be able to understand. 

Someone also pointed out that this would be nice for streamers if they want to bring on guests or have TTS donations enabled as an extra layer of security.

It will never work as well as they think it will:

1) ASR and TTS systems are not robust. 

 

It you turn scoring off on ASR, you'll typically find that what AI hears is not much more intelligent than guess-the-intent. So someone yelling "trigger" will just as easily be bleeped out for sounding like various other words ending with "igger"

 

Watch any twitch stream that has ASR captions already, unless the person has a clear English (as in London) or American (as in Atlantic)  accent, the captions will be a huge mess. Welsh, Scottish, Southern-US, Brooklyn, French-Canadian, Indian, Australian accents all get mangled, because ASR isn't trained on these.

 

2) Games often involve more than one voice. Unless everyone is on a separate channel (which is currently not the situation, not even on discord) for the AI to listen to separately, the cacophony of voices will overpower the AI's ability to bleep something out.

 

What needs to happen here is for the operating system to actually permit software to create and label separate channels, eg "game audio, game voice, game music, player's microphone, party member (1-99)'s microphone", and then have the AI focus on each channel independently when not gated.

 

 

Ultimately, until Microsoft makes some changes to Windows to allow games to put audio on separate channels, and/or create audio inputs for every output (to allow this filtering to operate in the first place) this will not even work without grabbing the global audio mixer's output.

I guess it would at least be better than nothing... though to be honest if you're a twitch streamer you should probably just mute other players, or make sure only you can hear what they're saying.

I feel like if you are playing a game that requires this advanced of a filter, its probably best to just leave voice chat off at that point.

Didn't know it was client side kind of thing. I still don't really agree with it though because if the issue is hearing the person say a word you don't like by censoring it yourself you are creating your own little world you live in that's not in tune with society. It's like if someone said the sky is blue, but you don't think the sky is blue so you plug your ears so you can't hear anyone tell you the sky is blue.
