Chris Roberts picked the engine for the visual fidelity but it is not suitable for a large MMO project. They had and still are in year eight rewriting the core engine. The engine is also large forgotten aside from Amazon and their trouble with it (they bought it and renamed it). This leads to a bad documentation and little support.

at the time there was no better engine for what they are trying to do, if they started today they would probably have gone with UE5, but that didn't exist, due to the scale of everything and the need for no load screens they have basically implemented most of UE5 features by themselves.

any engine they would have gotten would need lots of changes for it to be usable

I'm not sure it qualifies as a pyramid scheme but it certainly has the makings of a scam at this point... it should have had an official launch years ago with a complete basic space sim experience, after that they could just add features progressively through updates. I don't think people would have minded if it had a subscription fee or a premium cosmetic economy to fund continued development if the studio actually delivered. This way they can get away with promising all sorts of features that may or may not ever be implemented while having an excuse for the game not actually being fully playable at any point.

Well, I don't think it was conceived to scam from the get go, planning on not delivering. However, I must disagree with the last bit, since the essence of Ponzi type of scams is to go as far as possible, so holding on to it wouldn't be a proof that it is not a scam - it could be just be proof of a successful scam. 

 

Personally, I see it more as a gaming Theranos: it started with the goal of actually doing something, but didn't shy away from promising whatever it takes to finance it, and expand the promises whenever more money was needed. 

 

It's a new concept: after market financing, bank financing, venture capital and crowdfunding we got ourselves hype-funding :D

The thing is, even if this game gets done as they envision it to be, its not gonna be fun if that nut burger Chris Roberts really gets his way with it. There isn't one aspect of this game that isn't going to encompass your entire life for the sake of realism, from serving customers as a captain, hiring butlers, even having to shower, take a shit and piss. 🤣....This is what people are not getting, unless they remove Chris Roberts or something, the game is already fucked sideways. Anyone sane knew before the Kickstarter even ended that nothing would ever be completed with the project. The scope was too loose in definition and too large in scale. And we knew at the time that our computers aren't powerful enough for what was 'envisioned'.

And here's the biggest reason why too. You can't have a massive, niche game. You can have one or the other. And it needs to be accessible to a large playerbase if you want it to be massive. I don't think people would have minded if it had a subscription fee or a premium cosmetic economy to fund continued development if the studio actually delivered. This way they can get away with promising all sorts of features that may or may not ever be implemented while having an excuse for the game not actually being fully playable at any point.

You mean how the game works right now? You buy it and can go in-game a play a "basic space sim experience" plus a little extra, you can land on planets and space stations, walk around, do missions, mine and a whole lot of other things... is that what you mean? So the problem you have with it is not that it's not officially released.. the problem is the Alpha sticker they slapped on it.

Just so it's clear to everyone, can you explain (preferably in detail) what exactly "complete basic space sim experience" actually means?

You don't need a flight sim rig for this game. It's perfectly playable with KB/M or a controller. A flight sim rig is only for a more immersive experience i guess. Btw are you saying ED or No Man's Sky don't have six axis motion control? You can only fly left and right? or only up and down? Why is it to complex now and not in the 80's and 90's with the first space flying games? Why was it not to complex for the original elite?

It's not a scam.  There's a game or game components there, and backers can access them.  What's very arguable though is the level of feature creep, the definition of done which never seems to come, and how well it has been managed, but there's something there.  Its value can be contested.

 

I put in a bit because I've played most every Chris Roberts game growing up...but I also realize that this is also the person that lost a game development studio supposedly because of fund shifting from the studio towards the Wing Commander movie (or so the story goes).

 

Let's be honest, there are people that appreciate and enjoy it, and will probably feel the same way when (if ever) it is considered a full release.  It will never, ever live up to the hype that surrounded it the first couple of years of crowdfunding though.

To be fair no man's sky is way better than it was at launch and they added most of the features that they had originally promised while also adding new ones as well. Also the story behind how the promises were made and how the game was released is a bit more complicated than it appears from the outside.

Just reminds me of all those BS kick starter 'inventions'. They're just scams to get people rich quick.

Considered starting my own in some way! Free money! Promise something, never deliver... have the 'customers' chalk it up to experience.

I mean, first the game had a very basic goal in start, that definitely changed a lot and many times with crowdfunding and more ambitious goals. Obviously the very first set release ideas then are meaningless. It's like people forget all this. The scope and complexity of the game they're building as of now, pales to comparison of initial vision and idea back then.

It's not even closely comparable, but even much simpler and SP games that take years to make still get released unfinished, bugged, scuffed and lacking.

They'll be releasing both parts eventually, I'd rather see it amazing then some, just another game you scoff off after few hours.
