Verizon can't cover a basketball stadium with 5G

Verizon on Friday announced that its 5G network is now available in three NBA arenas and is coming to seven more by the end of the 2019-2020 basketball season. But there's a big caveat, just like there is with Verizon's 5G coverage in NFL stadiums: Verizon 5G only covers some of the seating areas.

"Just certain seating areas" in the NBA arenas have access to 5G, a Verizon spokesperson told us.

This isn't surprising, given that Verizon's early 5G rollout relies heavily on millimeter-wave signals that don't travel far and are easily blocked by walls and other obstacles. But while NFL stadiums typically seat between 60,000 and 80,000 people, the seating capacity in NBA arenas is generally 17,000 to 21,000. Despite the big difference in size, Verizon's 5G network isn't yet capable of covering all the seating areas in any one of these facilities.

Verizon also said 5G coverage is "coming soon to Madison Square Garden" in New York City, home of the NBA's New York Knicks and NHL's New York Rangers. Overall, Verizon said its "5G Ultra Wideband mobility service will be live in 10 arenas by the end of the 2019-2020 season," but it didn't name the rest of them. There are 29 NBA arenas and 32 NHL arenas, with some overlap between those lists.

It's not clear when or if Verizon 5G will be able to cover all the seating areas in any single major sports facility. Verizon boasts that its 5G is available in 13 NFL stadiums and is coming to more this season, but it hasn't said if it expects to achieve full-stadium coverage. 5G can work on all frequencies, so at the very least it should eventually be rolled out on the same frequencies used for 4G. But Verizon says that 5G on lower frequencies will be more like "good 4G."

I'm starting to doubt 5G more and more. The full speed 5G coverage is so bad that it can't cover a stadium and lower bandwidth 5G isn't that much of an upgrade over 4G it seems that 5G isn't all that it's hyped to be.

Maybe stop using 100Ghz and just overlap with 4G/3G bands?

I feel like there's a mentality of chasing theoretical speeds with no regard for reality.  In real life, there's a sweetspot.  Make the frequency too low and bandwidth will be limited, but make it too high and penetration + range are so garbage that you get the same outcome, just for a different reason.  They need to figure out what the ideal range is and just work on that.

 

Although with that said, it doesn't really explain the issue here.  Wouldn't everyone to be serviced be sitting in one big open area, unobstructed?

It really has less to do with the limitations of the technology and more to do with the fact this is likely just a PR stunt by Verizon.  Telstra doesn't seem to have coverage issue to that degree.

Unlike Verizon, Telstra understand wavelengths and what they need to get adequate coverage/market return.  Telstra are currently limiting to 2.4Ghz which still enables significantly more people on the network or up to 2Gbps in perfect conditions.  They are still fine tuning the system which is why some places occasionally lose coverage (this is not something specific to 5G though).

Just an assumption, but the limited availability is likely forced on them so they don't exceed the current SAR rating, eventually they'll lobby and get the public SAR limit upped. Being millimeter wave they are pry still concerned its a close enough wavelength to essentially use your eyeballs as antennas and heat them up causing headaches. We used to run into this issue with higher frequency Harris microwave PTP hops, when we'd go fix shoddy installs with leaky waveguide you'd get massive headaches and could only work near it for a few hours before having to go outside for a break. These antennas won't be anywhere near that level of "focused power", but its a known issue they are probably either playing it safe and slowly upping it over time or waiting to be allowed to do so.

 

I'm still upset 5G is even a thing though... its lower frequency is basically what 4G was supposed to be (and 4G's 3GPP standard still is), but marketing took over and people seemed to think LTE was an upgrade from 4G when it was really just the path TO 4G, so when the LTE marketing hype died off they couldn't go back to 4G hype and had to "make up" 5G.

 

As for the sperm count argument, heat of any form decreases sperm count and RF energy heats you up just like a radiant heater you'd put in your living room does, nothing dangerous about it unless you were around way too much power for way too long and it literally started cooking you. Due to the restrictions on areas with high SAR values, that would only happen if you were somewhere you shouldn't be. You'd then have to find the worst possible spot to be in, and be there for days to weeks without moving away because if you moved away you'd loose all that accumulative energy and have to start back over.
