Cloudflare terminate 8Chan

Recommended Posts

Posted · Original PosterOP

If this report is correct, then Cloudflare have served notice to 8chan as a customer - https://new.blog.cloudflare.com/terminating-service-for-8chan/

For years we've been creeping into a place where corporates decide what is socially acceptable, rather than the laws of a specific country. On the one hand it makes sense as these services are really international, but I find it a real pain when a company in one country can wreck my ability to do something that's perfectly legal in my own.

Credit card transactions for adult services are a long standing key issue. We're not talking the likes of Paypal/Patreon/whomever suspending the likes of Alex Jones, but more like companies refusing to transact for certain subjects. Like when FetLife was told to get any sharps pictures off its site or else its connection to the credit card processing system would be halted.

We have certainly entered a new era of scary.

I'm not big on censorship but I think this is the right move. Many people on these message boards are sick and get their motivation to kill from other users there. These killers need someone to impress and their fellow 8chan, 4chan, etc. peers are the only ones they can. Obviously this won't eliminate 8chan from the internet, but I like the stance Cloudflare is taking.

I've been reading a lot of the same opinion, the whole "Get rid of 4chan/8chan, and the issue is solved!".

Getting rid of the site that hosts the content/nasty people will only make the next site(s) they flock to even harder to penetrate/get rid of. The platform isn't the issue here, its the people that use the platform.

To that end, what needs a serious look is mental health. We need to isolate the root causes of why these people end up doing these horrific acts.

I personally think that these people feel they have nothing to live for, so they're much easier to goad into being a martyr for "the cause", whatever that ends up being. A lack of relationships(not just romantic), an oppressive feeling that everything is against them, and the ease of access to weapons certainly also contribute to the eventual decline in these people's mental state.

On the topic of Cloudflare deciding to remove its services from 8chan, I imagine that this is a public image move.

"Recent mass shooter used 8chan, and Cloudflare protects their website!!!" isn't a good look. While politics likely did have a factor in this, I don't think they were the major factor that caused this action.

I'd prefer that we be able to talk these people down without censorship. The only issue with that is penetration of one's voice is essentially drowned out.

This was unfortunately the right move.

Getting rid of 4 & 8 Chan isn't a cure, but chasing them off so their replacements are harder to find mean fewer young men get suck in by them it's still progress.

I'm not sure mental health is the problem, these people aren't claiming an imaginary entity told them to to it. It's more like being part of a cult.

My theory is the root of the problem is the lack of good, secure, jobs, and in places with good jobs, a lack of affordable housing. Many towns and small cities in countries across the western world have seen their employment opportunities decimated, especially those that relied on one or maybe two big industrial employers. In large cities there are jobs, but not all of them are secure and the pay can fall short of what is necessary to live in these cities, especially as house price & rent inflation have greatly outrun wage inflation. The traditional path through life of get job, buy house and have comfortable life probably with a family, has been shut off to many leaving many angry, disillusioned people ripe for recruitment into extreme ideologies, whether that is far right, far left or Islamic extremism.

I don't like the fact that you're quoting 4chan in this, sure there are questionable individuals there but it's in no way shape or form comparable to 8chan, that place is surface level darkweb tier when it comes to controversial opinions and talking points.

4chan on the other hand is incredibly tame, the only place there that's cancerous is /pol/ which is a containment board that every other board in 4chan hates, there is a reason 8chan users call 4chan the "cuckchan" because in 4chan you get IP Banned and to a certain degree even IP Range Banned for being a radical of any sort.

4chan is in no way shape or form as controversial as it was made out to be by the media back in 2006-2008, it's very tame and quite honestly a great place to be in depending on your interests (boards).

8chan on the other hand is a cesspool of pure cancer and so are many subreddits in reddit which to this date still have plenty of subreddits containing gore and child pornography getting banned and re-emerged as a new name instantly.

It's not censorship when a company doesn't want to work with any group for whatever reason.

Mental health has nothing to do with "imaginary entities". Either I'm missing a joke, or you need to look up the definition for mental health.

Your theory otherwise makes sense to me.

Aren't we just moving into the same territory as the war on drugs? This is essentially "if we kill all bad sites, there will be no bad people" similar to "if we try to get rid of drugs, say how bad they are and punish any seller or buyer severely; then drugs will go away".

How did that one go again?

Should we also ban Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, etc because they have also influenced mass killers and non-mass killers? People have used Facebook to livestream murders and other crimes.

The problem for me, is that we’re now in a place where some platforms are essential to daily life, and there isn’t any recourse. A company in one country can enforce rules with no regard to the law in any country, and there’s no come back. Amazon has even banned traders, withheld their money and refused to tell them why. Said companies have gone to the wall with people put out of work and there’s no recourse. https://alexzolo.wordpress.com/

I have no particular love for 8Chan, but the last two years just seem to be getting worse. Xbox live banning people and not giving reasons - https://www.change.org/p/microsoft-wrongly-banning-xbox-consoles-from-acessing-xbox-live - there must be a point where large corporates who we depend on, are held accountable for their behaviour when they host services which people rely on. And as services start to merge, if Xbox Live and the Skype accounts were linked, someone could potentially see their Skype die as well. Facebook has become very important for some people, to keep up to date with the people they’re connected with.

YouTube deleted a video of mine in violation of its own rules. The video should at worst have been flagged as age inappropriate (I was testing a methalated spirit camping stove, of all things… apparently a little darling could have hurt themselves if they mimicked what I was doing) … but no, they insisted that it stayed deleted … and for me, the whole thing is starting to go bonkers.

Big companies have too much power in areas which affect people’s lives (not my YT video, obviously) and no oversight. And it seems to be getting worse.

And for how many years was Cloudflare perfectly happy to take 8Chan’s money?

You know what we call it when you force a company to provide services against their will?   communism

You have absolutely no right to demand a company in another country do anything for you.

We have consumer rights.  Some countries are better than others I'll grant, but we do have them.  What particular right have you been denied today?
