some rationale behind the parts:

ddr5: limited ecc capabilities

case: i don't care about the prices also i need hot swap otherwise my parents will never figure out how to replace a drive

optane: stand in for a 16gb one for boot

2tb ssd: apparently an ssd to run a jellyfin server off of makes it faster

psu: seasonic be reliable

general storage: I'm willing to take advice on whether i should increase the amount of storage.:

backup dump for :

1tb laptop

2 tb macbook

2tb mac mini

 512 gb pc

1tb pc

2 tb external drive that failed and prompted me to build a cloud backed up nas to avoid ever having to pay data recovery again

128 gb iphone

2 256 gb iphone 

256 gb ipad

something gb oneplus

 

comes to 7.5 ish tb

 

the list has 6 hdd's, as one will be a hot spare for a single failure

 

 

 

Need help choosing between unraid or truenas scale for this. Keep in mind i'm a complete linux noob.(with enough spare budget to buy a perpetual updating licence to unraid)

 

as far as i can tell the trade off for truenas being free is that i cant add drives to a vdev after it has been made and that is apparently a pain

 

the trade off for unraid is the price and the fact that apparently its data redundancy is not as robust?(IDK i need help figuring this out)

Simplest answer: spin up truenas and see if you like it. If you don't get an unraid license

You can, it's just unsupported.

Those drives you chose are definitely not a great idea. there are 4TB WD Blues for 75$, but with current $/TB rates, your best bang for buck is in the 8-10TB range

Yeah I just did to my system couple of hours ago.

 

Unraid is unnecessary IMO.
