Apple slows down last year's iPhones with IOS 12.1 | iPhone 8 and X customers beware

Apple is slowing down the 2017 iPhones with iOS 12.1 and by default they will have performance throttling enabled to allegedly increase battery lifespan. It is possible to disable this although one has to wonder if non-techies will.

 

This affects iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X.

The only thing I REALLY hate about the apple products is the restriction for self repair (or 3rd party for that matter) and the prices. I mean they are good products.... Until they break half a year after I bought it...

I am gonna be honest here. Battery degradation. When it will occur? One year? Two years? Three years from now? It's a bs concept if you ask me. Even on Android most batteries are still pretty good after 2 years, but that's when I swap them anyway, and I have yet to see an iPhone user having battery issues after 2 years minimum. My gf has started seeing issues after 2 and half years of usage on her 6S and she is gonna swap the battery soon, that's 3 years now. How about this Apple, it's good that the switch exists, but how about you turn it off by default and let users decide if they want to trade performance for battery life?

Actually, I can do one better.

 

When the phone detects that the battery is degraded, it puts a persistent notification that says;

"The battery may require servicing. Functionality may be limited. Tap here for more info"

 

If the user taps it, it brings them to the battery health screen and allows them to turn off the performance throttling.

 

If it sounds familiar to Mac users, that's because they do in fact tell you when the battery requires to be replaced.

I think we all need to know one thing. Android also does planned obsolescence, just in a different way. Like 2-3 years of patches.

 

We need to realize that companies are not saints. Just because Apple is all evil and shit doesn't mean Samsung, Google and the like are saints. Hell, Google's recent decisions should be concerning everyone.

The planed obsolescence sucks either way but it should prompt you before throttling or there should be some kind of warning like "iPhone detects your battery is worn out and may unexpectedly shut off" if you disable the throttling feature.

not to be that guy, but i had an android phone for over 5 years, the battery started to last least and least and i had exactly this amount of shutdowns: ZERO.

The thing is, after those mentioned 3 years on the 6S, it says battery is good with 83% capacity. It can go from 100% to 0% in like 10 hours of doing nothing. THey would need to sort that as well.

The topic and general thrust of the OP is intentionally misleading.

 

Apple is not automatically slowing down these phones.  This only kicks in if the battery has degraded so much that the phone could shut down.  So long as the phone is reasonably healthy, you won't even see an issue... and as before, you can turn the throttling off if you don't mind the risk of your phone shutting down.

i decided to try and revive my old lg g3 a week or so ago, it started with 34% and after a few minute was at 4%. now yes that battery is 4 years old and probably hasn't been charged in like 2 years but still.
