You can sure have your own oppinion but the things at the end are complety just false. Planned obsolescence. With the proccesing speed that the a12 have compared to competitors will still outperform even when its slowed down. Its slowing down just so your divice lasts longer. And to called it “#PlannedObscolence” while the iphone 5s a phone that came out more then 5 years ago still get updates that improve the perforance is planned obsolescence weird claim. 

 

Its not a perfect company. But bash the things that are valid and not just be a fanboy to 1 thing and bash everything else

Prevention of repairs. Something that Apple is well known for, falls under the definition of planned obsolescence.

This might be controversial and I should disclose I do use an iPhone 7. I would prefer a longer battery life than better performance. I don't do much on my phone that would push it from a performance standpoint. I hardly ever 'game' on the phone and I'd honestly prefer the phone to last longer throughout the day. I agree that Apple should disclose this and educate their users on how to turn this mode off and inform them on what it's actually doing to their device.

Not really. Planned obsolecence just means that a company is intentionally and arrificially rendering a product obsolete for the sake of selling the next iteration.

 

Apple pushing an update to a phone that isn't realistically being used by any meaningful margin serves more as a questionable claim to "we don't do planned obsolescence! Our devices last!" But those claims likely don't hold up, the second one definitely doesn't.

I meant that they didn't disclose they were throttling performance initially. Few years back. I don't think it's something that Apple should try and hide what they're trying to do. The user should have more insight into what's going on with their device, we shouldn't have to learn about changes to performance by some person on the internet running GeekBench tests and seeing an anomaly and then Apple revealing what's going on a few days later.

If you wanna know whats going on then don't bother looking at all the data OnePlus connects. They even came out when asked about it and said it's how they make the phones so cheap

I understand, we're clearly on a different wave-length. I see the notification, it doesn't change the fact they originally didn't disclose this to their users and were more or less doing this in secret without the users knowledge and that they only disclosed it because they were caught out. Who knows how much longer they would have kept it quiet? Either way, as long as users now 'know' what's going on, I'm happy.

Do you mean all the monitoring that goes on within their phones? Yeah it's crazy stuff, and that's just what we know. Can't imagine the kind of data Google has...

You're right, that was stupid and they shouldn't have done it. But, they do keep users informed now and that is good.

Agreed, they seem to have improved that now, as long as user is aware and can choose to disable the feature I'm good. Honestly, I'd just keep it on anyway but I know others will want the option.

I don't know how I should feel about a $1000 phone from last year to be slowed on purpose in this year's OS update. I mean, common - I know that you get a new phone generation every year but it feels extremely excessive.

 

Does it mean that Apple is pushing the components so hard in the beginning to look better in benchmarks so the battery can't handle it a year later? 

 

If we assume that a typical person buys a $1000 phone and does not change it for, say, 3 years (I think longer but let's assume that if someone can buy a $1000 phone then they can afford buying another one in 3 years) it means that this person will be using the phone throttled for longer than they were using it unthrottled. This is absurd. Is this battery really so bad? Should they start looking at benchmarks and subtract 10-20% from scores so that they will know how their device will perform for majority of it's lifecycle?

 

And yes, I know you can manually disable it but let's not pretend that most people will find that option (or even think to start looking for it for that matter) because we all know well that Apple enabled it because they were fined for exactly this practice.

It only gets enabled if there is a battery degradation issue -- so it's only going to affect those who are the heaviest users. Furthermore, it gives you a nice big popup when it does get enabled due to a degradation issue and informs you how to disable it.

 

So, no, it won't affect most 1 year old devices -- probably not even most two or even three year old devices (at least in the case of the X / 8 Plus -- the 8 might very well throttle after a 1-2 years due to the smaller battery). And yes, they do tell people when it gets enabled. And yes, they do tell people they can disable it at the same time.

@79wjd thanks for clarification, I was under the impression that the option is ON on default with new OS and the user gets notification only when the device crashed because of battery.
