When their batteries started to degrade up to a certain point, anytime I did something intensive, the phone would suddenly black out. When you try to turn it on again, it greets you with a "Battery depleted. Connect charger" screen. When I finally did, it would jump to an identical charge level as it was at before the sudden shutdown. I recently changed the batteries on those phones, and they stopped doing that since.

 

The Nexus 6P was notorious for this.

That's weird, I have a nexus 7 from 2012 and the battery is still in great conditions. Still, your G3 hasn't really shut off randomly, has it? Running out of battery is not what's being discussed.

That means their battery was undersized. Iirc that was also the case with the iPhone 7 - Apple launched the phone with a higher clock speed than the battery was designed to sustain, then throttled it a few months later when they were done bragging about their cpu and the battery was no longer capable of powering the device at full speed. This is crappy engineering and false advertisement, not "performance management". A properly engineered device should be able to avoid battery degradation crashes far beyond the first few months or years.

Why do I read this so often? Androids can last, I'm still using a s5 and enjoying it. And yes, the battery has degraded very noticeably, but if it ever gets so bad that I don't make it to the end of a day, I can just replace my battery without any tools or effort.

It's not just battery size but also how well that battery was made in the first place.

 

Both the Moto Z and HTC One M7 had undersized batteries, but at least for the Moto, the batteries were made by LG, of which their batteries should be okay. IIRC, Apple's batteries are made by Amperex, of which their reputation for quality has been positive as well.

 

The reason I said this is because of the Nexus 6P. That thing had a huge battery for its time (3450mAh) but it ended up being a definitive example of bad batteries because it would keep shutting down at around 30-45%, especially under heavier loads or in sub-optimal conditions.

 

A larger battery that's made well will last a lot longer than a smaller battery that's made poorly. I think I can point to the recent Samsung flagships, which I think have battteries which age gracefully. My Note8 is over a year old but its battery is still chugging along nicely.

One, we've already been through this so many times with numerous topics on the forum

Two, the feature only kicks in when the battery has been degraded to certain point and unexpectedly shut down once

And three, it can be turned off

 

Stop trying to make it a new issue. Even I was confused for a second when I saw the topic

Launch week X here, 98%. I don't see the issue. Can turn it off if you want, an it's only on by default after the device already had a battery issue related shutdown.

 

Once the issue starts with the battery you also have a message that servicing the battery will help, and Apple recently made the reduced battery prices- their standard prices for many models.

Nice thing about replacing the battery 7 years after: shit is cheap AF. Took the chance to even replace screen, only spent 30€ for both parts

And read the title. It could've easily been renamed to "Apple extended the performance throttling mode with iOS 12.1 on iPhone 8/X" instead of making it sound like a whole other controversial update of for planned obsolescence

Have a friend/co-worker who is exclusively an iPerson, tells me he has a buddy who can swap it, and everything will cost 20 euros. HE can guarantee for the guy since he did it few times for him, 6 months guarantee on his behalf. I am gonna try that, am fairly interested.

Could consider getting a used 6s Plus and having the battery changed and stuff.

The 6s holds up extremely well, better than most phones released in the same year. They did well by putting a good SoC mixed in with an NVMe controller (the latter is probably a big factor in why they age well if you don't get battery throttled)

 

It's just one of those phones that seemed as if all the planets and stars aligned perfectly on the day where it was announced.

Because if "Apple phones can't realistically be usable for more than 2 to 3 years, no phone can be" logic.

 

Android phones regularly see much longer usable lifespans than iPhones. Boils down to better batteries and the construction of older Android phones being far more durable than the "premium" but fragile older iPhones.

 

Which just makes the "five year support" argument for Apple a joke for 99% of iPhone users.

Sure, I would like to see similar topics with Pixels, and Samsungs and whatnot. Right, because I'm not jobless to hate on them for simple software bugs plaguing those devices, that would inevitably be fixed in a future software update

Apple phones do last a long time. Average US person holds onto an iPhone for almost 3 years, which is alot better than average lifespan of an android phone. An no, one person still having original Nexus doesn't automatically mean all Android phones last for over 10 years

Satisfied? Apple just had a pretty large event, it's normal there would be more news about them in this time frame. Not that it matters if the news are factual.

It's a joke because companies have to advertise 2 years of software updates when Apple just supports their devices for 6 years

But with Apple, people like the OP twist the information into something more desirable for religious haters and there would be a topic for every single flaw of the iPhone, even if it's purely software like Chargegate (which only affected a small number of users and short-lived issue) and beautygate (which has been fixed with 12.1 release)

The same goes for the "chargegate" which were fixed in software, yet somehow completely fine because it's Apple.

But for a news post, you seeing it as "clickbait" is subjective, and considering it hate while wanting topics to be cherrypicked shows you have a really clear bias.
