Looking for PSU Advice

Ricodotsh

Hey all,

Upgrading my setup to a 4080 Super, so will be upgrading my PSU for that reason.

Location: The Netherlands (See nl.pcpartpicker.com or tweakers.net/voedingen for price checks)

Budget: ~€120 - €160

Preferred Wattage: 850W (750W vs 850W seems to only differ like 5 - 20euro, might as well).

This is the hardware:

MOBO: B450 Tomahawk MAX

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3800X

Memory: 2x16GB at 3266MHz

Storage: Samsung 990 Pro 2TB & Samsung 980 1TB

GPU: RTX 4080 Super

Case: Cooler Master MasterBox MB511 RGB

The CPU will be upgraded to a 5800X3D eventually.

Apart from that, reliability is important to me. Decent efficiency would be great, and preferably the PSU wouldn't be too loud.

I am curious if this post is still helpful, I can't imagine it wouldn't be even 3 years after it has stopped being updated.

Try using the PSU Tier List!

BeQuiet PP12M 850W, 140EUR, has the infamous 12VHPWR connector as a bonus 🙂

at that budget you are looking at 1000w and 1200w psus not 850w

xpg core reactor 850w at 113.8€, heres a psu with your specified wattage though it is slightly underbudget, yes 10 year warranty not a warrantyless unit

gigabyte ud1000gm at 132.7€, heres a psu in the lower end of your specified budget though it is 1000w, also 10 year warranty

enermax d.f.2 1200w at 150€, a psu at the higher end of your budget but its warrantyless (5 years) and a 1200w with a 10 year warranty like the gf a3 is 16€ overbudget

btw whats your current psu? cause this is a complete waste of money if your psu will work fine with a 4080s and 5800x3d

4080 is a 320w ish card, 4080s is basically the same thing but fsster vram so power comsumption should be the same

5800x3d is 110w ish

gives around 430w total power consumption so even a 600w unit would work though 550 and 500 are gonna be cutting it a little close

I've made 3 threads about this topic regarding PSU and my setup, and every time I've gotten a different answer 😅 I currently have a 2019 650W

Regarding those PSU's: Most are only available from Amazon.nl, which I haven't had great experiences with for hardware. The Gigabyte one is available more generally, but also seems to be rated lower on the tier list ranked earlier. When will I really need 1000W for years? I don't mind paying a bit more for a highly rated PSU that's 850W that I know will last me for years to come.

what specific 650w? if you already have the hardware just test it, for cpu prime95 smallest ffts and for gpu superposition to fully stress the system

to hell with those nonsense ratings they dont mean jack shit in the real world, ALL PSUS last 10-15 years and the psus above id expect more like 12-17+ years out of em as they are all of good quality

also i reccomended units with 10 year warranties so even if you get a lemon that only lasts 7 years or something like that just rma and get a new unit

Corsair RM650 (2019) 80PLUS Gold (ATX12V 2.52/ EPS12V 2.92).

I mean, if it isn't risky of breaking or damaging anything I could test it on 650W ye

thats a solid psu with a 10 year warranty and youve only used it for 5 years so the warranty is still intact

you are literally wasting your money upgrading the psu when it will clearly handle a 430w system with ease and still has a decent chunk of headroom

Is getting a be quiet 12V-2x6 / 12VHPWR 90° Cable a good idea as an extra?

https://www.megekko.nl/product/5453/1109024/PSU-voedingskabels/be-quiet-12V-2x6-12VHPWR-90-deg-Cable-PCI-E-0-7-m?s_o=1

Can help if you don't have much space front for the cable

An angled adapter - Cablemod-  will do as well
