Summary

John Deere got hacked - AGAIN!

"I could download the data of every owner of every single John Deere tractor in the world"

  • A white hat hacker/researcher 'Sick.Codes' found John Deere API is not secure - usernames can be queried easily. 
  • John Deere Doesn't do anything about it. They remove parts of the bug report page.
  • On social media, the white hat asked if they had received it via DM. John Deere asked them to send it to their social media team, which is not their security team.
  • John Deere systems have security flaws that allow customer locations, VINs, programs, and more to be accessed 
  • John Deere says on Twitter "Today's Forecast: one to three inches of nonsense." A representative says no customer information was accessed.

My thoughts

In my opinion, John Deere needs a dose of reality. Their equipment is a very large part of the agriculture of the US, and for such an attack to be possible could be catastrophic. The white hat and John Deere are saying opposite things, but I am inclined to believe the white hat since John Deere needs to protect their image with PR.

Just another garbage company trying to prevent the right to repair while trash at the core

It's pretty typical nowadays for farmers to flash their tractors with russian firmware from various forums as John Deere makes the tractor non functional if you don't pay for the software.

While I don't agree with what they do, it's normal. Caterpillar, Sandvik, JD, Atlas Copco, BTI, Maclean, all require their own programs to be able to plug into your machine and diagnose with their version of an OBD2 port. Atlas Crapco is the most user friendly actually. Just requires a USB stick. All the diagnostic information is already in the machine and usable. The rest all require a laptop, their adapter and cords, their program and yearly subscription to plug in.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

Even automotive is quite annoying this way. You don't need an OEM scan tool for everything but there are certain functions that are not available on Snap-on, MAC or Autel scanners. The only saving grace is the fact that they all use OBDII so you don't have to worry about OEM specific diagnostic ports.

You still run into some OEM ports here and there and not just on cars pre 1996 in the USA. Where they really stick it you now is needing a bevy of different flashing tools and as many different accounts and subscriptions to access the software to flash the cars or send it to the dealer on a tow. There's no reason, with VIN information, they can't pre-flash the computer modules to make them plug n play. Heck, I'd gladly pay them a pre-programming fee if it saved the time of having to get a car towed then send two people to go pick it up.

Even for on site mechanics. One mechanic I knew was told by the dealer that he was not supposed to have access to certain machines with his scanner. I forgot the models, but he got access to it by putting the information of a different machine but with the same engine, or something like that, I think. I wonder if the jerk faces from John Deere ever fixed that.

There is no doubt that Russia has pretty good hackers taking care of things like that,you can even find Russian hacking communities that are cracking BIOSes and unlocking them,even allowing overclocking on some locked boards.

I know someone who sold John Deere for 30+ years, and part of the reason they quit was the company culture changing. This news doesn't surprise me at all, either the lockdown on repairing or laughable security.

What?  What models?  I haven't ssen any software locked units.  Nor have I seen any "Russian" firmware.
