Intel 9900KS = 5.0 GHz on ALL cores

While overclockers have done it for a while, getting 5 GHz on all cores will be coming soon to retail products. This will be the fastest gaming CPU, and fastest announced consumer level CPU, at least for the next 10 hours anyway. You'd think there's something happening around now? No news on TDP but base is 4 GHz with all core turbo of 5.0 GHz. Base is higher than 3.6 of 9900k so expect TDP to go up.

Intel further confusing their nomenclature. The "S" has to this point denoted a lower power variant, with lower clocks, not higher.

 

What next, an i9 9900T with 5.5GHz all cores?

I can see why Intel is doing this, makes since and I would bet that they will OC quite a bit higher than the standard 9900K's.

So they are going to screw people buying the conventional i9 9900K by taking all the binned chips and selling for a premium as i9 9900KS themselves...

 

No more silicon lottery I guess... my i9 9900K can run 5ghz all cores I just leave it at 4.7ghz because my NH-U12P SE2 is not exactly up for it.

 

I dislike this marketing behavior because now every one buying the 9900K will know they are getting a lesser silicon chip and "fastest gaming chip ever" is one marketing that makes absolutely no sense, all these processors from the i7 8700K, 8086K, 9700K and 9900K all game pretty much the same clock for clock.

 

In fact the "fastest" is still the i7 9700K if you'll be literal since most games are still a bit derp when handling HT and the lack of it as shown to always gain a little bit of extra fps in comparison.

 

@Ankerson this 9900KS won't overclock better, it will overclock what good 9900K's do, what will happen as I written is that now the newer 9900K will be worse overclockers as the binned ones will be sold at a premium.

Cool to see an all-core 5GHz CPU 6 years after AMD's 9590.

Hopefully it doesn't suck the soul out of the VRM's like that thing did xD

9900k is 4.7 all core turbo? So 300 MHz bump. MCE is still OC however easy it may seem.

9900k turn off HT, you have more L3 cache.

They will be high binned CPU's like the 8086K's were to the 8700K so they will OC better than the standard ones.

 

My 9900K will do 5.2 on all cores, 5.3 if I really push it, I run it at 5.0 though to keep the VCORE down.

 

Was running at 5 GHz at 1.30V, now running it at 5 GHz at 1.32V, had to bump the VCORE slightly for some reason the other day. Was running fine at 1.3V for 3 months, not sure why I had to bump it up to make it stable again. Actual VCORE is now 1.308V and goes to 1.32V if pushed.

You can make anything look bad if you overclock it far enough. My 1700 was drawing 180W running at 4.0. MCE is basically an overvolted oveclock. Properly set it isn't that bad.

Exact situation happened to my friend who bought an i7-8700K shortly after the i7-8086K limited came out. She got quite a bad pick, couldn't run 4.8GHz stable even with a Cooler Master MasterLiquid 240. Suffice to say, she was not happy.

Added some extra detail there, at least for my Haswell chip, MCE puts all cores at single core Turbo. Pretty useful for locked skus. Not terribly useful if you have an unlocked multiplier.

Probably for older CPUs then, or certain boards. My i5-4590 has a maximum 3.7 GHz turbo, and my board lets me lock that frequency across all cores (I can certainly verify this). From what I've read, the board has control over turbo frequencies. Maybe this is no longer the case with newer CPUs?
