FBI unlocked an iPhone X by forcing suspect to use Face ID

Quote

During an FBI investigation of six Ohio men charged with sexually abusing children and creating child pornography, agents forced one of the suspects to unlock his iPhone X by showing his face to the phone.

On Aug. 10, federal investigators searched Grant Michalski's home in Columbus, Ohio, and found an iPhone X. Agents required him to put his face in front of the phone to unlock it, according to court documents.

But they couldn't unlock it with a password afters it's locked again, that would mean if it was someone's job to keep the phone in wake state enough to get the information they needed before it locks again.

Quote

The reason for the difference is that police can obtain biometrics, like your face and your fingerprints, through procedural measures such as mugshots, legal experts say. But passwords are something only the person who set them would know.

Several court cases involving Touch ID led to this legal precedent. The Ohio case is the first involving Face ID.

Apple probably faced a huge deal of pressure last time when they refused to I mean there was no backdoor to open users phone without thier password being encrypted on the device, adding a face unlock made the job easier for the authorities, ofcourse if people have nothing to hide won't have any problems but I wonder if people would avoid face unlock feature altogether from here on out.

Pro tip, if being approached by law enforcement, click the power button 5 times to disable biometrics. It will make any iOS device passcode only until it is unlocked again.

Also in the US Biometrics are not protected like passwords and passcodes are. So the police can unlock your phone with your face legally without your consent.

I think a lot of people don't bother using both. Though I know I use pattern, fingerprint, and face/iris, and I would just hold down power and tap restart.

Cool to know that holding power on iphones disables bio!

Are you expecting cops to just walk up to you on the street, punch you in the head and then hold your phone up to your face to unlock it so they can rifle through it for shits and giggles?

that's some next level paranoia

No, but its good going into any police interaction knowing your rights. Rights and protections are for everyone, I don't subscribe to the idea of "I'm not doing anything wrong so I have nothing to hide" mentality.

Well, good luck proving that one when it's only your word against theirs and there are no witnesses :| Also, they do know how to beat people so there are no marks left...

This is quite common in Poland if they catch you having weed etc. (to get to the supplier) - my buddy actually had the "pleasure" to experience that himself ;)

Do you think the police always catches criminals and never get innocent people sentenced for crimes they did not commit?

Yes, it is entirely possible that you might get arrested and the police wants to "rifle through your shit" because they believe you are a criminal.

Also, you now have to allow border police to look through your social media accounts when entering certain countries.

You are deemed a suspect without any evidence, then they want you to provide them with the data so they can look through it to see if you are a criminal.

I never enabled biometric unlock on my iPhone. And even if someone unlocks it, they would find many cat, coffee and food pictures.
