CNBC says Nvidia not affected by the leak. NO SHIT

EshanKumar

Quote

"Intel's chip problem may be a ‘tailwind’ for AMD, Nvidia sales: Analyst

  • Mizuho Securities tells its clients Wednesday Intel's chip security issue will be a "marketing edge" for its competitors.
  • The firm's analyst notes Nvidia and AMD chips do not have the same vulnerability as Intel due to differences in architecture."

Exact words from CNBC website. I mean they are technically not wrong because GPU architecture is definitely different from CPU architecture, which is affected by this flaw, but CNBC seriously needs to hire a new analyst.

To be fair Nvidia does have Tegra chips

Still stupid though.

Make sure to quote me or tag me when responding to me, or I might not know you replied! Examples:

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

I don’t understand people who invest in things they don’t understand... xD

Like how are you meant to be able to invest safely if you’re relying on 3 day late new sites that actually don’t tell you anything

You have to understand the audience that CNBC caters to: economists and investors. Most of them are likely not tech savvy enough to understand what's going on, so someone has to explain it to them.

Yes. And that is what bothers me. They are spreading misinformation, which can have various affects such as increasing share prices, etc. And when investors realize this news has no true basis, it can lead to a crash. Anyways, misinformation is misinformation, let it be Ars Technica or CNBC.

Well, people who got the interest in such stuff got no money to invest in it. People who got the money to invest got no interest in the minor and internal details. All investors care about is the profit.

You don't need to know how the food is made to invest in a restaurant as far as you know that you will get your money.

Well the idea of investing is having a rough idea of where the stock is going and making a profit off of that. How are you meant to know where a stock will go if you don’t understand the market the company is operating in or why this flaw is actually an issue...

Oh well, I suppose someone has to lose money on the stock market

Actually that makes the analyst completely wrong, because Nvidia’s Tegra ARM chips likely are vulnerable, as are all other ARM chips.

Taking it at a face value, the only misinformation I'm gathering is they treat NVIDIA in the same exact sector where this problem is concerned.Though technically NVIDIA still makes a CPU (Tegra), but it's not really relevant enough.

But eh, I don't expect most investors to plan for anything in the long term anyway. As long as they still come out on top, everyone else affected is just collateral damage to them.

There is nothing wrong about that article or the analysis. First of all, it's not CNBC or its analysts saying that but rather a firm and their analyst saying it to their clients. CNBC is just reporting it. As far as the analysis goes, it's definitely an edge for if not Nvidia then AMD. A lot of buyers will be unaware of the differences between a CPU and GPU so AMD could use it as an edge on security for their CPU and GPU and Nvidia could use it if the rumoured Intel dGPU becomes a thing in the next two years. There is also a final reason why the firm would report this to their clients. investing in tech does not mean you have to be in the know about how any of it works (see the Nintendo stock bump after Pokémon Go became all the rage), a lot of them won't understand the difference between a CPU and GPU, and as such believe that Nvidia and AMD would also be affected thus leading to a possible loss in confidence in those brands.

Which is always why I will never understand the stock market, and why I continually question why its a good idea, or how it can measure success...
If someone with enough fame/power claimed that ' C12H22O11 is a deadly poison, and that its found in Coca Cola' it could cause actual harm to Coca Cola's stock prices should say something.
I mean I would guess the average investor doesn't have a clue what C12H22O11 even is...

Though I tend to agree, that also shouldn't preclude people from investing in bluechip stocks from sectors they're unfamiliar with.  The real problem is garbage reporting like this that, though I can understand way they make a comparison, did a poor job of illustrating how radically different they are from each other.

Though, if we're only thinking about super computers and massive multi-billion dollar organization projects; the lines get blurred from the money POV.

If we were long term investors and not HFT speculating leaving money invested and not paying attention to it except for extreme moments, it usually turns out well for avg joe with their money growing a good deal more than inflation.
