The Titan launched as a cut-down GK110, then a few months later a slightly slower 780 launched, then a few months after that the 780Ti launched as a a full GK110 and then a few more months later a Titan Black launched as a full GK110. The Titan X(P) was likely a cut down GP102 due to yields. Now that yields have gotten better (or demand for full GP102 chips has decreased), Nvidia can sell a full GP102 core. I know this is a common occurance (hence why i bought the Ti) but it just means that i STILL don't get why they do this each time. Also i don't get why people keep buying titans haha They didn't have enough GP102 to sell full GP102 Titans, hence the need for a cut-down core. So from day 1 Nvidia could've sold a 1080Ti and a Titan X(P) with a cut-down GP102 core, but they can make more money by releasing the Titan first (at double the price) and then releasing a 1080Ti. Then, as there is no reason to buy a Titan with the 1080Ti in existence, they begin to sell a full GP102 Titan (now that they have a suitable supply) and make more money. It makes perfect sense. The only thing that doesn't make sense is why anyone would buy a Titan, and the answer to that is either they're impatient or they bought into marketing. My Titan X still faster than 1080ti due to gold silicon And yes you're missing something, nVidia always market the Titan as the top of the line for each architecture, I was already preparing for the Titan X Volta next year knowing it would be the newest fastest card, then all of sudden there is a Titan X Pascal 2.0? that's stupid, it would be no different than buy a Fury X and AMD later release Fury X 2 for the exact same price and architecture. This is worse than re-branding on my opinion.
