I agree about having little sympathy for people not being able to see past the tip of of their nose, but I don't think 2 titans per generation was a consumer expectation for many people.

 

I think people that want the best of the architecture are dumb for purchasing on the assumption of 1 titan per architectural generation since there were 3 titans that used Kepler and only one other architectural generation to Titan GPU reference (maxwell). Definitely not enough info to make any assumptions.

Yes, people that assumed only one titan per architectural generation waere dumb in their assumption since there were only two architectural generations of titan prior to the first pascal Titan X. However, a lot of people apparently Titan buyers did not expect this and nVida pissed probably off a lot of people that didn't read into the first generation Pascal Titan X they purchased (because the only reason to buy a titan is to have a large epeen, and if ego is considered before logic mistakes will be made).

 

This may harm first the sale of volta titans when they release regardless of whether or not only one volta titan releases (like the maxwell titan).

Yeah, but Ti cards have historically been single GPU cards. The squared portion was because the titan z was dual GPU.

I got that. I was just trying to fit the lineup with the GeForce line. Adding a Ti is also a pretty effective way to mark a card as dual GPU, without having to write DUAL or know before hand which specific editions were dual or not.

 

Even though I made this jokingly, it also a useful point that the naming scheme that they already had was effective enough they could have just kept it if they planned on releasing multiple version of titans.

P.S. Releasing something to the public that is almost no improvement over the previous model 9 months after the original release is not "advancing technology." It's advancing profits. nVidia knows people that whant the biggest epeen will blow their life savings on this GPU.

 

I'm not against nVidia making money either. It's not like they are forcing consumers to buy titans or anything since the transaction a mutually accepted by both parties, but I do fear that they will use this money to crush AMD as competition and eventually have a monopoly of the GPU market. That really would not be a good thing for anyone building PCs. It would inflate the prices of all their GPUs.

If you are referring to the Titan X Pascal vs the Titan Xp? The Titan Xp added 256 CUDA cores. While that's not an "OMG SO FAST" crazy difference, it's still substantial enough. We'll of course have to wait for real benchmarks to say anything more definitive than "It's faster". How much faster? We'd both be guessing if we said.

But why would anyone have the expectation that there will only be one Titan per generation? Historically speaking, they would be wrong 50% of the time, if they had that expectation.

 

Kepler had the Titan and Titan Black. Maxwell had the Titan X Maxwell. Pascal now has the Titan X Pascal, and the Titan Xp (Essentially "Titan X Black", if you want to compare it to Kepler).

 

So do you see how that expectation was basically just made up in people's heads?

Also I totally called that they were going to make a card with 3840 CUDA cores and target 4k gaming. After all I made the joke that the had the other cards with 2560 or 1080 CUDA cores and those were perfect for their respective resolutions.

The last rumors I saw put the Mac Pro around an early 2019 launch...by which point we should be well into Volta territory.....so I really hope they don't go with a Titan Xp (assuming the 2019 launch is accurate).

I didn't upgrade from the Maxwell X to the Pascal X 1.0 because I was pissed NV only gave 3 month lead to the Maxwell X before dropping the 980 Ti.  If I'm paying a 50% premium I expect to not get shit on that quickly.

 

 At least Pascal X owners got something like 7 months of top dog status before the 1080Ti dropped.

 Timing will suck, when someone just spent $1200 on a card, and all of a sudden for the same price a better one comes out.
