Phill Schiller explains why MacBook Pros don't have a 32GB RAM option

Phill Schiller, the head of marketing for Apple Incorporated,  was recently asked why [Retina] MacBookPros did not have a 32GB RAM option.

 

Since many people do video editing on their mac, this might bother some of them.

And basically, it allegedly comes down to power consumption.

To put more than 16GB of fast RAM into a notebook design at this time would require a memory system that consumes much more power and wouldn’t be efficient enough for a notebook

What I think he's referring to is using desktop DDR4 since I read somewhere that Skylake doesn't support LPDDR4.

 

And indeed, using DDR4 would consume more power.

 

But I think that they could easily just have quad channel LPDDR3. Except apples doesn't use RAM slots......

Why Phill? Why? Huh Phill? Why? Oh more power consumption great excuse. Ask razer about 32gbs of RAM. Sure it uses more power but it is running at 2133mhz and it is DDR4 not DDR3. They sip power compared to DDR3

No they aren't at all. But Apple's battery life is measured when the computer has just the base kernel running with everything else turned off. Not false advertising but no where near what they advertise.

This makes a lot of sense. They did not want to compromise on their awesome battery life and to do that they had to cut back on the RAM a bit. 

 

Look at it this way, if you are a pro, and need more than 16GB of RAM to edit video, consider not buying a MacBook Pro? 

 

Don't want adapters? Don't buy a MacBook Pro. 

 

I love Apple, but I notice that the people that bash them the most are the ones that never have/intend to use/buy any of Apples products :/

The computer is not designed to be user accessible. Really the only thing you can do in a Mac is remove the SSD (and upgrade it) and Wifi card.

Except now they have some dodgy proprietary SSD connector. So that really just narrows it down to the Wifi card. Also, they could just solder more onto the board and have a slightly larger battery (maybe 5-10mm in all directions).

Honestly I know that they can do whatever but they'd save a bit of grief if they were more honest about their suffix in the naming scheme. So we shall refer to this model as the Macbook Dipshit. It's simple, distinguishes it from it's peasant counterpart without a suffix, just works.

Oh. Well, just add a few more cells, keep it just as flat and expand horizontally and just like that, you'll have enough space and battery to support a few more DDR4 chips.
