is that even direct competition to that mac? I mean one has touchscreen and 4K on roughly 4-6hour battery life while the other has no touchscreen, a lower res and a longer lasting battery

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

Forgive me if it's not the first competitor which comes to mind. Even Apple doesn't see the XPS 15 as the real competitor.

Hint, the competitor apple was thinking of has the EXACT same pricing!

Don't buy a 13" MacBook Pro if you are a "pro", get the 15"

If you actually look at it the 13" is targeted towards students. This is why it only has dual core i5s and 8GB RAM base with Intel Iris Graphics

The 15" is where stuff starts getting real with more I/0 Radeon Pro 460 dGPUs, and 16GB of RAM.

You to realise what you just said, right?

The 13" MacBook PRO is aimed at STUDENTS? That sentence made my brain fry.

The Macbook Pro 15" has the same issues as the 13" model.

I love how "the product is targeted towards X" is somehow a valid justification for making a product bad these days. It's the same as when people defend stupid things Microsoft does because "it's targeted as businesses". No, the Macbook Pro is not targeted at students because most students doesn't have 1.5K to spend on a laptop, and even if they did that would not justify having an dual core i5, 8GB of RAM and integrated graphics at that price.

"It's for students" doesn't mean "we can keep the price high, and put in md-range CPUs and low end GPUs".

Expat students do. A lot of students in my school have MacBook Pro Retina 13" and easily could have a 1.5K USD model.

Non techies don't know that. For them this would be normal........

Of course it doesn't. In fact, I'd argue that "Students" itself is a too broad target market. Students studying different subjects need different machines.

An art student may want a laptop/2 in 1 with a pen. A computer science student may want an i7 and 16GB RAM. An engineering student may want an i7, 16GB RAM and a dGPU.

It really depends on what you need. And frankly, you should only ever buy a mac for the software/os. The hardware is overpriced.

No they aren't at all. But Apple's battery life is measured when the computer has just the base kernel running with everything else turned off. Not false advertising but no where near what they advertise.

Not true... From the Apple website -

  1. Testing conducted by Apple in October 2016 using preproduction 2.0GHz dual-core Intel Core i5-based 13-inch MacBook Pro systems with a 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM (wireless web test, iTunes movie playback test, and standby test). Testing conducted by Apple in October 2016 using preproduction 2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i5-based 13-inch MacBook Pro systems with a 512GB SSD and 8GB of RAM (wireless web test and iTunes movie playback test) and preproduction 2.9GHz dual-core Intel Core i5-based 13-inch MacBook Pro systems with a 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM (standby test). The wireless web test measures battery life by wirelessly browsing 25 popular websites with display brightness set to 12 clicks from bottom or 75%. The iTunes movie playback test measures battery life by playing back HD 1080p content with display brightness set to 12 clicks from bottom or 75%. The standby test measures battery life by allowing a system, connected to a wireless network and signed in to an iCloud account, to enter standby mode with Safari and Mail applications launched and all system settings left at default. Battery life varies by use and configuration. See www.apple.com/batteries for more information.

Anandtech have even praised Apple's battery life testing, and using their own benchmarks achieve similar results.

Yes ideally, but with 1.5K €, you can either buy a real laptop and no desktop, or a chrome book and a real desktop, not both...

This makes a lot of sense. They did not want to compromise on their awesome battery life and to do that they had to cut back on the RAM a bit.

Look at it this way, if you are a pro, and need more than 16GB of RAM to edit video, consider not buying a MacBook Pro?

Don't want adapters? Don't buy a MacBook Pro.

The 13 inch version is so outrageous overpriced for the hardware that I don't think it should be aimed at students. I mean if you have the means to waste money on overpriced laptops you might as well get the one with decent hardware. I think the 15 inch version is also overpriced but if you're going to buy an overpriced MacBook pro the 13inch doesn't seem like a good option for anyone. I mean when has anyone said the reason they bought there MacBook pro was to save money.
