Micro$oft Winblows 11 has less than 0.21% adoption rates from compatible PCs, says Lansweeper

Summary

Market research done by Lansweeper reports that less than 0.21% of the 10 million PCs it surveyed had upgraded to Windows 11 from Windows 10, despite the upgrade being free. Additionally, more people are running outdated Windows such as 7, Vista, XP, etc. than 11. Windows 11 has been released for 3 months now.

My thoughts

My mind has been blown. I thought at least they'd get 1% adoption!

Honestly though I'm not surprised. Windows 11, at best, is still in beta stage IMO - they released the OS with Snipping Tool broken somehow, their "File Explorer update for Windows 11" was a shell extension that can be disabled with a few commands, their Android support didn't release with the OS and has been delayed to 2022, the taskbar is centered without activation so you have to home in on the start button instead of just dragging to the side, etc.

Essentially it's Windows 8 all over again, where they made it nice for touchscreens but forgot a lot of people don't have touchscreens. Similar to Amazon's Kindle (non-Fire) update where they made the UI a lot like the app, but didn't realize most Kindles don't act like phone touchscreens?

Perhaps the "tick tock" method of Windows releases where it goes "good bad good bad good bad" (XP Vista 7 8/8.1 10 11)

I'm definitely getting comments "no you don't know what you're talking about", but that's why there's this handy little "IMO" marker stating it as an opinion.

 

I do find it interesting that there are more Windows 2000 and Vista users combined than Windows 11 users.

Here's my opinion on updating to Windows 11.

I'm not going to. Ever. Too many things I use have been removed or obfuscated (EdgeDeflector as an example).

The only reason I considered it was because of WSA, but people are already figuring out workarounds to installing WSA on W10 so that's no longer a roadblock.

To people who installed W11 and enjoy it, more power to you. I'm going to camp on W10 until they actually make a better OS.

I'm not supprised. It bricks compatibility with certain things and had features not working out of the box.

(I also have programs that would be affected and don't work like they do on win10 last I checked.)

Mostly steam programs that change the way windows looks for me. (Wallpaper engine Translucent TB)

Windows 10 forever shoved down their throats and then out of no where windows 11 with no media coverage or mass ads. Of course no one uses it

Windows 11 has only been out for two months, not three. But regardless, I'm not really surprised at all by this. Microsoft really messed up the launch of Windows 11 in several ways, and I suspect we won't see a major change in the numbers until more and more people start buying new computers running Windows 11.

It's not even good on touchscreens it's garbage. Windows 8 was beyond far superior in that regard and besides the start menu thing was fully functional as a desktop os. 11 just isn't really functional.

Yes but steam survey is for gamer while the adoption says it include commercial and it is very very unlikely that commercial PC run steam. In business adoption rate is slow. Usually you wait the second year of release before adopting.

I'm not surprised at all, considering W11 doesn't support older hardware, lots of bugs on release, MS trying to force W11 users to use Edge, and unnecessary UI changes like start button in the center, and less options in right click menus, so of course not many want the free upgrade.

I personally will stick with Windows 10, there isn't anything that has me wanting to install W11, and hardware I have that MS doesn't want to support I'll install linux onto.

They haven't really pushed the upgrade much, I think they're not that interested in getting you off of 10 yet. When 10 launched they were in a rush to stop supporting the aging 7 and the irrelevant 8; that's not the case now. I think a lot more people are going to upgrade once the initial bugs are ironed out and 10's EOL nears, right now there just isn't much reason to.

Commercial PCs would have terrible adoption rate either way, even if W11 would be much better.

Compatibility with their poprietary software often keeps them locked into old operating systems for a very long time.

 

At my job i still had a 2core athlon PC with 2GB of RAM and Windows 7 using some fucking Windows 98 skin. And i was still using internet explorer because my company just didn't bother making their stuff compatible with newer software or hardware. It only just got replaced this summer.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Tbh i already got used to these UI changes and some new shortcuts. Last weekend i helped a friend fix an issue on his W10 PC and now i can say with confidence that i definetly prefer W11, even after using W10 since it's release. I know they even removed some features that were present in W10. I cannot say for sure what it is but W11 just feels more intuitive to use for me.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

Well, If you checkout BestBuy, at lest in Canada, you can see that you have many (possibly most) laptops sold are still under Windows 10.

While they do say "free upgrade to Windows 11", most consumers won't upgrade, they won't know how, let alone know how to check for updates to see the banner.

 

I think Microsoft plans are pretty clear. When Windows 10 will reach end of life, all supported system will be forced upgrade to Windows 11, or at the very least, when coming close to the end of life of Windows 10 (probably in early 2025), have pop-ups to upgrade, much like Windows 10 did.

 

Microsoft knows that:

  • By having users switch to Windows 11, Microsoft doesn't gain much. So they can stay under WIn10. The new Store is now on both OSs.
  • Windows 11 shares the same code base as Windows 10, so maintenance cost would be low. Bug in one, have a good chance to be in the other.
  • People uses the OS that the system came with. 
  • Companies computers don't have Windows 11. The update is not available yet. "General Availability" status (as per MS definition)  has not been reached (expected "early next year"... this was said before Windows 11 was released)
  • Windows 11 update available though Windows Update is not available to all yet. It is still a wave release.

So, considering that the OS was released for only 2 months, I am not surprised. I am more surprised by the adoption rate shown of gamers based of Steam Hardware Survey. I expected it to be the very low.

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.

well i run w7 for my testbench and never will update to 10 on that thing unless it has been upgraded to a quad core, and a modded w10 like revi os or something. and 11 is just stupid. well its only been 3 months so no sht why theres no adopters cause its basically in beta atm and also no compatibility with old hardware, itll prob increase atleast past outdated windows versions like w7 in a few months but if not then ms royally nuked themselves xD

It's what stopped most of the people I know using it on their personal devices. Pair the "Supported CPU list" with the recent enough memory of Windows 10 being shoved down people's throats and breaking things you can't blame people for not clamoring to install it.

Been giving it a try on my daily laptop and definitely agree. The clock, taskbar, and settings app are laid out way better. Plus search hasn't even crashed\stalled once.

Microsoft is playing the long game with this OS. There's a reason why Windows 10 has an EOL date of 2025, Windows 11 has the hardware requirements it does, and why they're not shoving 11 down everyone's throat like they did with 10.

 

They're perfectly happy supporting both OS's for the next 3 years and people will be receiving 11 as they upgrade their hardware or replace their computer.

Its not in beta any more. It s a completed os. To keep people happy, its not at a full public release yet, because you know peopel will be pissed when their new laptops start somming with windows 11

Theyre doing something smart supporting windows 10 for a while, they saw what pushing 10 down people throats did, so theyre making it a long game.

And id like to point out its 100% compatibile with old hardware, and ran fine on my core 2 quad q6600 system, if not better than 10, once I got it to install,

I could use some help with this!

theres no important data so if i get some stupid virus or malware then its literally just wipe drive and reinstall os anyways, ill prob keep using 7 till stuff stops supporting it
