BondiBlue
Go to solution Solved by BondiBlue,

Summary

The Apple Unleashed event is over! Here are the new products that were announced:

  • AirPods
    • New AirPods 3rd Generation: MagSafe wireless charging, Adaptive EQ, and longer battery life
  • HomePod mini
    • In addition to Space Gray and White, HomePod mini now comes in Blue, Yellow, and Orange
  • Apple Music
    • New Voice Plan starts at $4.99/month, allows for Apple Music through Siri, including new custom playlist
  • And yes, new Macs and Apple Silicon
    • The M1 chip is now part of a lineup of three SoC designs, including the M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max
    • The MacBook Pro has been redesigned, bringing back more ports, MagSafe charging, better battery life, and more
      • The 14" MacBook Pro starts at $1999, and the 16" starts at $2499. The 13" M1 MBP is now the base model
      • Support for up to 64GB of unified memory and 8TB of flash storage
      • M1 Pro and Max both have 10 CPU cores, and M1 Max can have up to 32 GPU cores
      • Fast charging has been added to the MacBook Pro, allowing for up to 50% charge in only 30 minutes

My thoughts

I'm really excited for the new MacBook Pros. I plan on upgrading to a new 16" MacBook Pro within the next couple months, and I can't wait.

…desktop 3080 that is and it achieves that probably at 1/3 of the power draw

If that is true they all praise to Apple. I hated the Intel Apple products because of the heating issue and lack of performance, but now... Oh boy...

If it ain´t broke don't try to break it.

Apparently the Max GPU is 55 W so 1/6 or something of a 3080

EDIT:// I can’t confirm the 55 W claim so treat it as a rumor

So it has a desktop 3070 in it? With a power draw of a laptop? wtf even?

Yep, I hate the looks. Liked the older design. Notch to be honest isn’t too bad, just making better use of space IMO.

Yeah I guess it wouldn’t be that bad with a dark menu bar. That said I do hope they get rid of the sliver of the menu bar that sticks out underneath the notch. I dislike it on the iPhone and I think I’ll dislike it more on the Mac.

Correctly labelled X and Y with values and proper scale. Actually good job Apple, done it correctly this time.

mmm the price hikes up really fast once you start adding the memory.

Why the hell does a laptop screen have a notch, especially for only a simple webcam?

That thing better be 16:10 so that the notch only cuts into the Finder bar and doesn't interfere with 16:9 content...

I remember listening to some podcasts (like ATP) last year back when the transition to Apple Silicon was first announced, and there was doubt Apple would be able to even match the dGPU from AMD in the last Intel MBP 16”. One theory was that they would still use a dGPU from AMD in the Apple Silicon 16” MBP and bigger iMacs.

Turns out they can 2.5x (M1 Pro) and 4x (M1 Max) the 5600M 8GB HBM2 card.

Because if you watched the presentation, Apple decided to expand the display up into where the black area typically was. This means you now get the full screen aspect ratio without the menu bar, which is a tradeoff I can completely understand and accept.

It only cuts the menu bar so it shouldn't affect any normal content. And yes Macs have always had 16:10

I'm pretty sure the notch/bar area will have a local dimming zone right along the edge, so that it'll be perfectly black when not using that area, ala OLED displays.  It's going to be perfect blacks... let's see if they solved the weird text fuzziness problem.

happy to see magsafe come back

150$ now for the charger+cable, WTF it use to be 80$ for both

64gb of ram is tied to M1 MAX chip not M1 pro ie 24/32 GPU not 16.

Thanks for pointing that out, I was guessing both "other" laptop CPU were Intel ones but that confirms it. Bonus points on Apple, very well done.

but it is still based on "relative performance" and it doesn't say SOC, full system whats the power consumption being measured?

Okay, that's reasonable, then. I think it would make more sense if they made the Finder bar black with white text on this model so that it better blends and acts more as a "dynamic bezel", but at least knowing that they're not cutting into what would otherwise be the regular screen otherwise makes sense. And it at least puts that space in the center of the Finder bar to good use, I guess.

Kinda disappointed about them ditching the touchbar on the keyboard, although it's whatever.

It looks like their GPU perf claims in their presentation versus Radeon Pro 5600M were using Cinema 4D.

The LPDDR5 memory modules are bigger than I was expecting

(snip)

Assuming everything is to scale ofc lol.

Larger LPDDR5 dies physically dissipate heat faster, but at DDR5 speeds, they are generating more heat to begin with.

Larger LPDDR5 dies cost more to make, supply chain shortages may hit them first, also supply chain shortages are more severe on newer fab nodes such as LPDDR5.

But Apple books their fab capacity far enough in advance, so there's hope these chips won't be constrained by the LPDDR5 dies.

still more interested to see what a mac mini or imac pro brings to the table. I don't see my GF late 2013 loaded 15in MBP getting replaced with one of these 16in machines

Maybe Apple's paying a pretty premium to their SSD partners to have consistent supply (considering they'll need millions) in these troubled times, compared to a WD/NVMe SSD which have much more variety in models and less demand per chip.
