4090, is this the wrong time to buy

RasmusDC

My PC shops locally are having a sale on 4090 Asus OC the Strix model, so the GIANT chonker, it is right now the cheapest 4090 you can find..

but is this the wrong timings? when is the 5090 going to move forward.. i have a 3080 today, so kinda still "working fine" but my son is struggling a bit on his 1080ti, which is a "fine card".. but struggling.

but again would be stupid if the 5090 was like months from now

Wait if you can, I expect 50 series to be a big jump based on rumors and nvidias ai chip announcement. But we don't know pricing and actual performance numbers yet.
Also it'll probably have DP 2.1 connectors which will be very helpful in the future.

Also availability is likely to be pretty bad initially at release so your actual wait time will probably be longer.

It entirely depends on the cost.

@RasmusDC

Firstly it depends on your budget. We can't say anything about the pricing yet about the 50 series, but by looking at the fact that you are considering for a 4090, you probably have decent budget to get a high end 50 series card which definitely at least by the rumours, will be quite a bit faster. As a matter of fact, we still have the 4090 Ti yet to release. At the 50 series launch, if you think the price is too much and not justifiable, the 40 series prices will be even lower than today. I would suggest to wait.

Also, Dell is evil, but HP kinda nice.

Idk. At launch we knew the maxed out die has 18k+ CUDA cores but the 4090 chip only has 16k.

I can't imagine they would release it now, will probably just use that PCB/die for a 5070/80.

to be honest, i have a lot of disposable income, and we have a lot of "surplus" so it is not really a dent into anything..

i just thought that instead of like buying a 4070Ti for my son, or an old 3080 maybe a better solution would just be to go 4090 and then give him my 3080

to be honest, i have zero problems running my 3080.. i do know that i "MIGHT" end up just snagging up a 5090 at launch. still...

but it still kinda, haunts me, because of course the 4090 is not like "CHEAP" the STRIX i can get is what the CHEAPEST card cost 2 months ago, well a bit below but it is peanuts.. so it is not like "uhhh cheap 4090"

and this is also another bracket than the 3080 and the 1080ti which were both cheaper, got the 3080 at launch so it was not "THAT" expensive it is LESS than 1/2 of what a 4090 costs.

but for my self, i have a hard time really buying a 4070ti which is not much faster than my 3080, well it is.. and the difference between the 4080 and 4090 is big, and to be honest, best price to performance seems to be 4090.

i run Racing SIM, i play normal games... 4K on a 240hz OLED.. and the SIM on a 120hz 4k big tv.

to be honest DP2.1 would be nice, but it is not a NEED for me. i get.. that DSC is required right now. and it seems dump that AMD could do that port for a worse card performance wise.

i am not going to upgrade my screens in the coming time,
