What is essentially a regular Samsung monitor with their TV features built in. It's targeted to people who have a balanced use of a television and a computer. It is available now.

Samsung has taken the wraps off its all-new Smart Monitor lineup. It starts with a trio of Smart Monitors split into the M7 (UHD) and M5 (FHD) ranges. The proposed selling points of these screens are that they are versatile and affordable, with the flexibility to be used for productivity, learning, and play. The South Korean electronics giant goes on to describe the Tizen 5.5 OS powered Smart Monitor line as a 'do it all' solution.

Providing some less abstract use cases, Samsung says that you can cast/share screens from smart devices using Tap View, App Casting or Apple AirPlay 2. If you are already in the Samsung mobile ecosystem with necessary supporting hardware (like owning a Galaxy Note20) the productivity integration of Samsung Dex might appeal to you. Even without a computer or mobile you will be able to fire up Microsoft Office 365 applications via the monitor's Wi-Fi connection and view, edit and save documents in the cloud. Furthermore, Remote Access allows Smart Screen users to access files or view content from a PC/laptop situated anywhere else, as long as it is online. Wired connectivity is afforded by conventional wired display connectors like HDMI 2.0 but the pricier M7 model has USB-C port for video, data transfers, and 65W charging too.

Thoughts: Certainly useful for people who might either A: not want to buy two screens. B: Don't want to turn their PC on just to watch youtube. The price is pretty good as well, for a 4K 32inch screen it doesn't break 400 USD when it's on sale.

This seems like a pointless idea. I don't know of a single smart TV feature which can't be replicated on a PC already!

That's quite interesting considering one of my first 1080p monitors was a Monitor/TV combo which seemed to completely die off years later. Now its back?

Anytime someone calls a device a “smart” anything my first reaction is “keep that thing far from me!”

 

”smart” and electronics are to date a contradiction in terms.  One I suspect will not change in my lifetime.  The biggest super computers haven’t reached ant level intelligence yet.  It’s like that whole mission creep problem between “drone” and robot. A drone is an ROV. A robot pilots itself.  But people seem to consistently want to call drones robots.  A roomba is a robot not an ROV, though only barely one.

Eeeeeeeh. 

I guess it might have a small market somewhere... But considering how quick PCs can boot these days and how much of a pain in the ass it is to use a remote instead of a mouse & keyboard to navigate/type... I would still powered up the PC over using any sort of "smart" features a monitor might have to watch the limited selection of "content" they allow me to have.

 

On a TV it makes sense, not everyone has a HTPC in their living room. But on a monitor? That's likely hooked to a PC? Yeah, not so much.

If it can do 4k streaming because of drm being built in then I would consider it. Unfortunately drm is not built into my current pc so I can't do 4k streaming as a result unless I want to plug something else into my monitor to do so. Also I have heard that Netflix is worse quality when streaming using windows vs other systems like smart tvs but I am unsure of the validity of this. Anyways it would be a nice add if they simply added it to any monitor but honestly I would want it added to their galaxy series of monitors like their 240hz 1440p va monitor that has crazy good response times close to tn panels even though it is a va panel.

I for one view a TV as having a lifespan of at least 10+ years. Frankly, I don't want any technology from an API/Software standpoint to be rendered obsolete and insecure. Its obsolescence should be governed by physical connectivity. It either connects and works, or it doesn't. No square peg in a round hole. It's easy.

 

Besides, why pay for features on a TV I'll never use anyway? It just adds an unnecessary expense. Any logic that gets sent to the TV will be from other external sources anyways.

who would honestly buy this when most people stream already on their PC. so what's the point of buying a somewhat tv if you can already get netflix and live tv services on your computer. IDK man this just kinda seems like a waste of production

Great idea to bring this back. Unfortunately I‘m way too picky with monitors and watch TV whenever a show is on that I want to watch - that is some stupid brain-off show, nothing that I can also watch via stream. So basically once a year for a week.

My understanding of the technical difference between a tv and a monitor to be the presence of an OTA antenna system.  Functionally there tend to be others as well like which port and panel types are used which are more or less optimizations for the type of equipment often connected and type of content often viewed.

Samsung is bringing back TV features into their monitors, that's awesome. Samsung have been doing this for the past 10+ years or so. They used to called it TOC business HD montiors, where they're monitors will have a built in TV tuner. Still currently using one, and even comes with a TV remote.

Difference for those who don't see the point is, these screens, their main priority is to be a monitor 1st and TV second, while TVs, their priority are the opposite. 24 inches and above have a aspect ratio of 16:10 so it's 1920x1200, not 16:9 at 1920x1080.

Replicated and done entirely better on pc. 

 

I can't stand smart tv's. Everything about them is slower than if done on a pc.

If these come with the same savings we see with smart TVs (they sell your data - hence smart tvs are cheaper than dumb ones) then sure. Just don't connect it to the internet and you've got a dumb monitor for cheaper.

Smart TVs are shit and I will always prefer an AppleTV over it. They are usually laggy, some have ads built in, and they sit on your network and sell your data. NOPE hard pass

I can upgrade my AppleTV when a new one comes out, you can't on a smart TV. It get more updates as Apple is supporting it not some chinese company. I can also use my iPhone as a remote if I need to. But most importantly the UI is clean and it doesn't lag at all. If you have ever used a TCL TV with a built in roku or fire stick it is pure shit

You can get 42" for nearly half the price with same features, HDR10, 250 nits, intelligent tv, android casting, pc casting, remote file viewer (for NAS).

But that's from some random cheap crap brand - rather than Samsung - and the "buy now" button throws an error.
