Office 2022 to have a one time purchase

rcmaehl

Summary

In a move we can only hope Adobe copies, Microsoft's Office 2022 is stated to keep the one time purchase model.

Microsoft has announced a...a one-time purchase for Microsoft Office in the second-half of 2021. The announcement was spotted by Windows Central in an Exchange press note. It was expected that Microsoft Office 2019 will be the last version to offer [it]. This new announcement means the company is planning to keep the one-time purchase for basic office apps alive, for now. Microsoft 365 is currently the most popular way...It is a monthly/annual subscription to the basic apps, bundled with premium ones like OneNote, Outlook, and Publisher. If you’re someone who just wants to buy and use the basic apps for a couple of years, without any updates, this plan is suitable for you. The only catch here is that when the next version is released, let’s say Office 2020, you’ll have to separately purchase it. The annual subscription also gets you premium apps like OneNote, Outlook, and 1TB space on OneDrive. There’s also a family plan that allows up to 6 members to use the services on a single subscription.

My thoughts

I'm so glad Microsoft is continuing the one-time purchase model. While a lot of us would also prefer other companies would still be following suit, it unfortunately doesn't seem like companies will. Regardless, I think we should all applaud Microsoft for keeping One-Time purchases for as long as they have.

Always good when they leave options open for consumers.
Reminder that the office 365 suite is free for all students (or people with a school email)

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

And even once you finish your studies, whether that be college, university or whatever and you still have it downloaded on your computer, you still have access to it, though it only pesters you to sign in with an active account or asks to renew the license. Other than that I still got full functionality even after 1.5 years after I graduated.

I really like Microsoft 365 and it is nice to see them continue to offer the one time purchase for those that don't need the OneDrive storage or don't like the subscription model.

Office 365 has been officially renamed Microsoft 365. It's been rumored that just like KMS activation, soon you'll be able to subscribe to a Windows 10 license. But for now, that done through VLSC. So you laugh now, but that will be reality sooner or later.

So it's no different than installing the volume license version of Office. I guess that makes sense.

In all honesty, 5€ a month for a continuously developed OS isn't that bad of a deal. Yeah yeah, we're gonna hate on it anyway, but really, that's 60€ a year. A legit retail copy is what, 300€ ? It would take 5 years to get to that in monthly installments. I'm talking actual retail copy, not all the OEM versions we all use and that we got for 5€ from a grey market. Most people just aren't willing to drop 300€ on a retail copy. Or even 120€ for OEM that's tied to one system in a one time payment. But 5€/month, people can manage. I mean, if they pay 12€/month for Netflix and it can literally only play videos for them, 5€/month for OS that allows you to run anything and everything kinda seems fair. But then comes the dilemma of me saying yes to a multibillion corporation about this and everyone, including my inner voice are screaming "fuck no". And the fact if you don't pay the OS stopping to operate is a weird way of experiencing things where current old OS just keeps on working and becomes vulnerable and problematic on a global scale, not just for that user (when those systems become bots).

Office package in a way should always be a one time purchase. It's an add-on package that can easily be outdated and still usable. OS is a bit different thing. We'll see how it unfolds. Hopefully in our (consumer) favor...

The SaaS model is very popular with business from a consumption standpoint due to less budgetary constraints and it's predictable expenditure. Software vendors love SaaS too because it's a constant stream of income..

The consumer market however (not business related) prefers one time purchases.

Telemetry?

If there's a boatload of telemetry built in, you might as well use GDocs. It's almost as good (sometimes better), has a cost of $0 for individuals and Google strikes me as more trust worthy than microsoft. (myactivity.google.com exists - where can I delete my telemetry data from MS? LinkedIn? Why do my "don't track me" settings keep on getting disabled in windows 10?)

Naive if you think deleting things there actually deletes things...

For home users, OnlyOffice is an excellent free alternative though. Has similar ribbon style interface as MS Office. LibreOffice is too different to be really a direct replacement, although still a powerful tool...

I use Libreoffice only because I do not use those programs that much really.

Related note, I don't know about alternatives to Libreoffice, just use it because it's first thing that comes up basically when you Google.

I know Microsoft Office is better (at least I think so) but I don't think it's worth it when I use it the amount I do. If I would starting using it more, I would get one time licence and not a subscription as I dislike subscriptions.

A retail Windows 10 (home) copy costs 130 dollars, not 300.

It's 200 dollars if you buy the retail Windows 10 Pro directly from Microsoft. OEM version are even cheaper as you said. You don't even have to buy it from a sketchy gray market. You can buy a brand new OEM copy of Windows 10 Pro from Walmart for 60 dollars.

So the whole "it would take 5 years to get to that in monthly payments" is more like 12 to 22 months.

Besides, Windows 10 was released in 2015. So if we are going to compare monthly payments vs one-time payments then the breakdown would have looked like this:

One-time payment: 60 dollars and it is free forever.

Subscription: I would have paid 360 dollars so far and an additional 72 dollars every year I want to keep using Windows 10.

Not a good deal. Companies aren't pushing for consumer subscription services because they are kind and it is good. They do it because the companies behind it wants to make more money and earn it in a predicable stream rather than in big chunks. Simple as that.

Even though it's an option, the one time cost is ridiculously high compared to the subscription. So anyone forced to choose may choose to go through subscription route, especially since it can be installed in 5 PCs (plus phones and tablets) and lifetime updates, compared to one license you get with one time. So, it's not really a choice.

It's high time the free office like apps start taking over. Sadly Google docs just sucks

Do we know the price of Office 2022?

According to one of the articles, Office 1029 was 150 dollars. That's not too bad.

If you plan on using the same Office version for more than 2.5 years then you save money by buying the stand-alone version. Although you do miss out on updates and the stuff like OneDrive storage.

Seems like a decent compromise to me.

Totally agree with you that it would be great to have some better free alternatives. Google Docs works well enough for more basic tasks but it lacks quite a bit of features, and looks very basic compared to MS Office.

Office Standalone purchase for 1 PC is $250 in US. For international, and that excludes regional taxes and in my country is abotu $350. Office subscription for 6 PCs is $99, but in my region it is $72/year.

I assume the new office would be the same in price - if not widened the price gap a bit more to entice people into subscription

The thing is most families have multiple PCs at this point. And buying a seperate license for each PC isn't worth it at all. So we would be forced to resort to subscriptions

I don´t get why people are willing to pay these ridiculous prices. It is way too much for a consumer to pay. $20 would at most and that is stretching it. I am glad there are cheap third party sellers.

Which version are you looking at?

Here is Office 2019 Home & Student for one PC. That's 150 dollars on Amazon.

It costs the same if you buy it directly from Microsoft.

There are some shops that sell it for slightly less though.

Oh wow I realized I was looking at home and business. And Home and student is not even listed unless you specifically search for it

Price is much better - but still its for an induvidual PC. Actual cost is the 2x times what i written for one time purchase

Nice timing - my grandmother recently had MS tell her they are no longer supporting Outlook 2007. Hopefully my copy of Office 2010 H&B will tide her over until 2021. The extra year might also make paying for it more palatable (I also gave her 2007 - she last bought Office Pro 2003).

Google Docs is a pefectly respectable alternative for most people, but Google really need to stop being so petty about it ONLY being usable offline if you use Chrome.

If I could download a Google Docs desktop app I'd switch in a heartbeat.

Thanks for reading all this by the way!

By the way, my desktop is a docked laptop. Get over it, No seriously, I have an exterrnal monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset, ethernet and cooling fans all connected. Using it feels no different to a desktop, it works for several hours if the power goes out, and disconnecting just a few cables gives me something I can take on the go. There's enough power for all games I play and it even copes with basic (and some not-so-basic) video editing. Give it a go - you might just love it.
