Sony has finally gave into the backlash from locking Fortnite Players into PC & Mobile and now have opened their doors for ALL cross platform features in an open beta, starting today. In a statement issued by the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment:

Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content. We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution.

 

The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems. We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.

I'm very happy they finally gave into the pressure and actually gave the community what they want, but... SIE deserve no claps for this, it took them wayyy too long. 

Xbox seem to be very happy with this agreement.

The whole shitstorm with Fortnite crossplay wasn't even about crossplay itself. I mean that would be nice but that wasn't what everyone was pissed off about.

 

What people were upset about was that as part of Sony's "no crossplay" policy they required Epic to lock accounts out from other systems if they got registered for Fortnite with PlayStation. That was a massive overstep that wound up locking a ton of people out of Fortnite on other devices they'd prefer to use.

 

If Sony has just done their usual "no you can't play with friends using different consoles" thing everyone would have probably just rolled their eyes and taken it.

Well, the thing is that Sony is Japanese. They don't announce some shit they don't know will work or not.

I suspect that they worked on (good) Cross Plattform Play the whole time and always evaluated the possibility, while the Official Company Policy remains: It is not possible. Until they can show that it works and that there will be no problems with this regard.

 

 

The japanese don't shout out some stuff they want to do like the Americans do...

 

Just compare a SWTOR Livestream to a FFXIV Livestream and you get what I mean. While in the SWTOR Livestream its the best and biggest and amazing, the Japanese are more down to earth...

 

So it might be that the Japanese Mentality was in their way and they secretly worked on it behind the scenes the whole time and denied the possibility - until they got it working.

But that's not what they (=many people inside the Company) wanted. And also the Developers also should have said it clearly to Sony.

 

So it was never planned to go through with it, and always allow Crossplay, like they did with the PS3!

But they needed some tweaks for the Infrastructure and/or weren't sure how it could be implemented.

 

Now they know and have a solution.

I am going to call b.s. on that one. If I remember correctly it was working by accident for some time but then they blocked it after they found out. To say it didn't work before is just garbage. If they got the switch to do it then it should be easy. Also isn't Nintendo Japanese as well? Didn't they have support for it a long time ago on release? Sony just being a dick and nothing more. Either that or they don't want people to realize that if you want to play competitively then you play on pc because mouse and keyboard shits on controllers in fps games everyday of the week.
