Updated: Intel Removes Intel Power Gadget Utility Download Amidst MacBook Pro Controversy

Giiman95

Source Article: https://9to5mac.com/2018/07/21/intel-power-gadget-mac-removed/

  • “The download link for the Intel Power Gadget, which reports info like Mac CPU temperature and current clock speed, has been conspicuously removed from the Intel website today (July 21, 2018). There’s no explanation on the page as to why the company suddenly removed the download, although it sure is convenient timing. The utility has been used by many tech reviewers to highlight possible thermal problems with the 6-core 2018 MacBook Pros.”
  • This Utility has shown processors in the new MacBook Pros dropping below Apple specified clock speeds. Multiple media outlets have used this Utility to verify the clock speeds produced by these chips.
  • Intel nor Apple have responded to requests for comment.
  • UPDATE: The Utility has since been restored. Utility supposedly contains bug fixes. It is currently unknown how this update will affect any results moving forward.

Personal notes: @LinusTech showed throttling on the MacBook Pro around 20 minutes of unboxing it using this tool. Good thing he downloaded it before Intel removed it. :)

How is that ironic?

seems kind of dumb given that the clocks can be measured by other programs...

Tin foil hat on: Apple begged Intel to rig the power gadget for Mac so that people like Linus and Dave2D will stop complaining about the i9 MBP's lack of capability to maintain 2.90 GHz. xD

is this like a reaction to a flood of downloads or o_o

I would say no. I'm like 99% certain that this is Apple telling Intel to remove the download, just to make it a little bit more work for people to verify this insane throttling. Basically, it's your typical knee-jerk damage-control.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

And here I am, being an ex-fanboy, still watching every keynote in the hope that they turn the ship around again.

Really starting to lose all hope for this company. RIP my great experiences back in the day.

As much as I like to bash Apple nowadays, it is really sad. They used to be really premium for premium prices, now they are just a mess for stupid prices, all while lying to their customers and swimming in money.

I hate to say it, but part of the reason why are due to the apologists.

When this happens to a Windows laptop (which has), you'll see people quickly criticizing and even bash it. But if the same happens to the Mac, it goes into one of those "You're using it wrong" scenarios.

That's one of the reasons why I was kinda let down by the Morisson video. Sure, it was informative to a degree and had some results, but I wasn't really keen in the statement that the results were "skewed" due to the use of Premiere and that the actual title of the video was kinda condescending by saying that everyone is "wrong" about the Core i9 MBP

Encoding - Don't use the GPU they said... #HeatsoakingCPUviaGPUakaThrottlinglol

CPU only encodes.... take forever and a day,.. much MUCH MUcH longer,... that'll help a throttling battery powered toaster.

/s

Heatsoaking IS a thing,.. but exporting CPU only vs GPU assisted encoding is night and day,.. most will leave on GPU assist and deal with it.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

How to remove overheating problem - Remove all temperature sensors from motherboard next year

You need thermal sensors for turbo boost.

The better solution is to move the CPU sensors into the display away from the heat (as everyone wants to keep all components cool), if you have a constant display temperature you will never reach TCasemax

Either way this removal is useless, there are half a dozen other programs which do the same thing i.e. iStat Menus.

Yeah, the removal is useless, but I think it was removed on the Intel's discretion as it hurts their product marketing as well as Apple's

It think it'll have the reverse effects instead.

As it kinda confirms that there is a problem

i would say it's more likely that apple made them remove it.

If there was any company that didn't like to admit to a flaw, it's Apple.

God, I'm glad that they mess up with Intel CPUs and not others.

Who is at fault? Don't care. But mostly it is because of too weak cooling, too small heatsink...

Something people aren’t realizing is that the news about the “thermal throttling” in the new 15” Core i9 MacBook Pro also reflects badly on Intel.

Doesnt matter we know who is actually at fault for causing the CPU to throttle, Intels name is associated with the bad press.

This could just as easily be an Intel decision as it could be Apple lobbying for Intel to do it.

It reflects poorly on Intel because people see the i9 name in the media and don't understand what's going on.

I'm going to lay the blame on Apple since Apple designed the cooling system. They probably used the same cooler that they use on the i5 and i7 machines to save on R&D.

Something's really fishy, not just with Apple, but with Intel.

Something's telling me that there's a LOT of really bad shit going on with both.
