PCIe 3.0 riser cable issues?

Go to solution Solved by IkeaGnome,

In the motherboard BIOS go into your PCIE settings and force your PCIE into gen 3 instead of Auto.

A gen 3 riser between gen 4 components will cause weird issues.

Hello, everyone!

A little bit of context:

I am running a Core i7-14700KF with a Z690 chipset MOBO paired with a MSI 3070 slotted in a 4.0 16x port. Running a freshly installed Windows 11.

I upgraded from a Z170 chipset and Intel 6th gen CPU. The GPU was not upgraded which was slotted to a PCIe 3.0 16x slot with an EK Riser cable -I assume the riser is also 3.0, but cannot be 100% sure-.

I was also using Windows 10.

Now I am noticing that playing Final Fantasy XIV at 1080p will max out my GPU utilization to 99% most of the time, and playing a video on a secondonitor at the same time will start to stutter and run very poorly probably because utilization is at 99%.

This didn't happen before the upgrade. And doesn't happen with a second similar setup before the upgrade.

I made sure I have the latest drivers.

Can a PCIe 3.0 riser cable connected to a PCIe 4.0 slot be the culprit?

How can I be certain that the cable os indeed a 3.0 one?

Thank you!

Sorry, but your post is a little difficult to read for people that have their page set to the "dark" mode.  Makes it a lot easier on the eyes for a lot of people like myself.   The only thing that I could read normally was the Thank you! at the end of the post.  Sorry.

Take care and good luck.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

i get slightly annoyed with this as well, but really not a big deal. you can just highlight it and see it fine.

Sorry about that. Just copied from another browser and didn't notice. Fixed it!

That makes a lot of sense! I forgot you could do that in the BIOS. I'll try that! Thanx.

why not?

always keep a few barb fittings and soft tubes, to either test card in different configuration or remove it entirely..

and to easier drain, a drain valve at the top and bottom of the loop. i have a stop valve too.. to easier drain each side of the loop.
