Apple could have avoided the App Store mess by listening to Schiller in 2011

Summary

Nearly 10 years ago, Phil Schiller wrote an email to Eddy Cue and Steve Jobs with the title of 'HTML5 Poses Threat to Flash and the App Store' where the first part of the extract reads 'Do we think our 70/30 split will last forever?' In this email he says how Apple should lower their taxes on the App Store, revealing at that time made a billion USD from App Store tax, and suggesting that they should lower the percentage if they know they will not suffer a loss in App Store income and maintain rates.

My thoughts

I suggest you read the email for further details, (it is in the website link) but in short it is what Apple should have done. Get this sorted before anyone notices and makes this an issue. Now Apple is writing legal document, hearing in courts and whatever else. Even as an Apple Fan of some sort, I still think this should have done earlier, even though the reasons from Epic Games are pretty lame.

To be fair to Apple, they are a company and have to make money. App Store is a huge part of that. If they did it back then, they wouldn’t have 10 more years of that 70/30 split.

but they would suffer a loss in income if they lower the percentage they take. Not saying I agree with apple's decisions, but basic math says they would take a loss by giving more to developers. The reason they make so much money is because they charge a premium. If they go with more reasonable costs, they get a smaller chunk of profit.

Insanity is not the absence of sanity, but the willingness to ignore it for a purpose. Chaos is the result of this choice. I relish in both.

It’s only a problem until you label it as one. It wasn’t an issue 10 years ago, it’s an issue now. I’m not sure how this is really relevant as this is sorta how things work.

It is a real issue and it is bad for app developers and consumers. I don't like Epic or their store but it's not something they made up, they are one of the companies that fight it the most, however Spotify and Netflix have also.

No its not lol. Console makers have sold consoles at a loss with the intention of making the money back through the store on the consoles. If you allowed third part stores on the console then they would be far less like to do that making consoles more expensive for everyone simply because you want more options. Also its not like adding the ability to use third party stores is something that won't effect the os in any way. The great thing is that there are options and there is completion. It's called buying an android based phone.

What do you gain from developers being able to sideload apps? You know what you get? You get an app that has had absolutely no vetting whatsoever and a fresh new massive security vulnerability on your device. Awesome!

All the console makers, or the phone manufacturer would have to do is hide sideloading in the settings, and make it off by default, so only the people that know what to look for would be enabling it. I really would welcome sideloading on consoles that way the device isn't so limited in what it can do.

And people using scare tactics to say sideloading is bad is very misleading, what benefit do you have to say sideloading is bad? Less choice isn't a good thing. Also there have been security vulnerabilities in the app store.

Sideloading is not secure, look at the dumpster fire that it causes on Android with the constant onslaught of malware.

I think it comes down to Apple trying to have their cake and eat it too. They want the 30% cut and the ability to arbitrarily ban apps(like emulators and game streaming apps), but they also don't want you to be able to go outside the App Store milking pen. Apple should either lower the cut and relax the App Store rules, or allow people to opt-in to sideloading alternate stores. Win-win for the consumer and developer.

I would say people should be way more upset with Qualcomm. Every android phone that has a Qualcomm chip is also paying patent royalties on things that are not in their devices. Qualcomm forces the OEMs to sign a revenue sharing deal and pay for its “IP portfolio.” If I’m not mistaken it’s 10% of the price of the device; mind you the OEM still has to pay for the chip. Every Android phone with a Qualcomm chip would be 10% cheaper if Qualcomm couldn’t force the OEM to also pay random royalties.

Unfortunately it's the way all games are going. What used to be 

"How can we create the best game possible to appeal to the most amount of people to buy it?"

 

has turned into:

"how can I monetise the shit out of this "game" for as long as possible?"

 

There are a handful of games that come out every year that are a pay once, own forever type game. But sadly i don't see them being around much longer.

That is complete nonsense to say someone is stuck in Apple's ecosystem. That is a choice they made themselves.
