I knew as soon as i saw the 2080ti price back when it released, that Nvidia (now AMD) were trying to add a price hike. I just thought people would be sensible enough to stand on basic principles not to be 'had' by them. ofc people bought 2080ti's ..and they'll buy the 6900 and 3090 as well this time around.

 

Seems like we fked. This new price tier is staying.

I think AMD doesn't have much of a choice, if they price their product lower then they are seen as the low end brand, and since Nvidia has a majority of the dGPU market Nvidia gets to control the pricing.  I don't like these increases on prices either, but the 6800XT at $50 less is at least something.  I'm just curious if there is a noticeable performance gain from having Smart Access Memory enabled, I'm waiting for in depth testing from Gamers Nexus and Hardware Unboxed.

We can break the market into two parts: new builds and upgraders.

 

For new builds, this is probably the best ever time to go all AMD for the high end. There may be cases where one side or other does better, but overall it sounds like you can have a top tier gaming performance experience going all-red.

 

Upgrading is more complicated, but that they have an offering that can go directly against the nvidia high end, it leaves the performance door open to both sides.

Hmm. I'm so on the fence about this to return my 3090 especially since I'll buy amd next but I do like Nvidia more... err

I agree, the real mistake would have been to price it higher than nvidia...

 

At least these cards aren't as ridiculously priced than 20xx, plus nvidia is probably going to be forced lowering prices / or push out "revisions" without cheaping out on vram (hopefully for everyone involved)

Well yea, we don't know that yet, we'll need GN, Linus, Jayz, etc to tell us what to think, err, I mean, post proper comparison videos!  

 

 

Edit: especially on 'outdated' hardware... If there's a huge difference I'll just go NV, better features and I don't need to buy what basically amounts to a new computer...

New PSU might not be necessary for some people, according to Linus the 6900XT can run on a 650w.

Is it me, or did AMD compare the 6900XT to a 3080 and not a 3090?

 

The benchmarks they used closesly resembles this https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/geforce-rtx-3080-3090-game-ready-driver/, which the first chart uses a 3080. 

 

Games that don't use RTX and DLSS, are Forza, Doom Eternal, and Gears.

 

 

The video credits also stated they compared the 6900XT to a RTX 3080, not a 3090.

 

 

EDIT: Was informed that Doom doesn't really have a benchmark mode, so theres a chance that they could have used different scenes and such.

We don't have nvidia's actually pro (GA102-based) Ampere cards yet either, do we? Those nvidia cards that doesn't exist yet would go against those AMD cards that doesn't exist yet.

 Well, its kind of a bummer that I won't be able to take full advantage of these GPU's performance unless I have a Ryzen 5000 series CPU. And the 6900XT costing $999 is hella steep for someone that's buying it just for gaming. I'm sure you'll get diminishing returns with it compared to the 6800XT, so 6800XT it is for me.

thing is AMD usually doesn't price their pro cards higher than the titian class.

I must say AMD impressed me a bit. I wish they'd talk about ray tracing a bit more, but what they've shown is pretty damn good. Lets see how it'll perform in actual reviews and under specific conditions. But so far it looks really promising.

 

I'm also very interested in inner workings of the Infinity Cache. Sounds like eDRAM memory bolted on GPU.

Is the 6800XT clearly better than the RTX 3080? Performance, power-consumption, price, all seem to be a bit better with the 6800XT.

 

What do people miss-out on if they buy AMD instead of Nvidia? Just DLSS? Do Nvidia GameWorks features like Hairworks work with AMD?

just dlss, gameworks is just a set of graphics effects for devs, the end game runs on everything

and amd has its own hair effect which is straight up better, its the one that is used in the tomb raider games

don't worry too much about that, from what they showed the performance gain seemed quite small, as they only showed it with also the auto overclocking feature

I imagine the ray tracing performance on here isn't going to be as good as Nvidia's offerings nor will it look as nice as Nvidia has had time to really egt RTX built up while Microsoft has onlyhad so long to make DXR and it being less of a dedicated hardware thing may mean even though its an easier to implement API the visual fidelity of the ray tracing will be lower. (As seen on the PS5's Spiderman RT reflections having only about half the details showing and at a lwoer resolution)

Yeah, pretty much most professional software that rely on GPUs are locked down to CUDA, and those same softwares are the ones where the 3090 shines and is an excellent purchase.

I mean, yeah it looks like its going to be margin of error at best, but that's only for now. I'm sure the gap will grow larger to a more meaningful extent as time goes along very soon. I'll buy a Ryzen 5000 CPU when I start to see it.

Well no because RTX don't work without DXR, RTX = DXR + sprinkles on top.

 

Either case it doesn't actually matter because we don't actually know anything about AMD's RT support at a technical and architecture level and what actually matters is what games end up doing. DLSS 2.0 is pretty well the only thing that is truly exclusive in terms of both hardware and implementation and not as fully bound to what the game devs do.

 

You only need as much BVH calculation capabilities as games require, any more goes to waste, which is where Nvidia could find problems.

The price and performance of the 6800XT and 3080 are close enough it seems that I'd be happy with either so it comes down to who can get stock in first.

I've just re-watched part of the launch and noticed that Scott Herkelman said at around 15:35 in the video "[AMD] are already working on a super resolution feature to give gamers an option for more performance when using ray tracing." That sure sounds like a DLSS counterpart to me.

I agree it would've been a mistake for AMD to price their cards higher, although they could have with the 6800XT having 16GB, either GDDR6 is significantly cheaper, or TSMC 7nm has much better yields so AMD can keep the price lower.

Although I am expecting Nvidia to rush out a 3070Ti, or a 3080Ti with more cuda cores and 12gb vram.

I hope you can flash a 6800 to a 6800xt like you can do with a 5700 right now. Otherwise it's not that much of a bargain - 18% faster than a 2080 ti means 18% faster than a 3070, but it's also 18% more expensive ($580 vs $500). 

 

I had hoped the 6800xt would undercut the 3080 by more than $50, but I'm happy if the 6900 is as fast as the 3090 for $500 cheaper, that's huge.

To be fair, that should be in the product already, not a vague promise. Ideally.
