COVID-19 - READ THE RULES BEFORE REPLYING

Interesting read, thank you.

Okay so let's be clear about this - the report (created by a third party Think Tank) made some claims. But where's the evidence that these claims are correct?

The basic advice "Follow the science" was good advice. The UK Government not nailing implementation does not validate the idea that following the science is the a bad course of action.

Yes there is merit in taking action when the science isn't clear. But that too is "following the science". Often you have to take very limited data (at the beginning, there was almost no data, and literally every day we learned new things about the virus) and you have to make a decision. Sometimes it's the wrong decision. Sometimes it's the right one. You usually don't know until it's too late.

However, as long as they were consulting with experts in the science community - particularly infectious disease experts - and were constantly adjusting course depending on new evidence from these experts? That's a good call.

Them not closing the borders sooner or doing testing for incoming travelers was - in hindsight - stupid. I don't know why specifically they made that decision. But many other countries also made similar decisions until the scope of the outbreak was very clear.

So, you took the article's title and ran with it, without reading the article, good job!!

TLDR ; the tink tank mentioned in the article criticize the UK government for not imposing measures (that you're complaining about) quickly enough. Because at the beginning, the science wasn't there and there was conflicting theories put out.

What about all the misplaced people who had to evacuate? I heard 10% of Oregon's population face evacuation. Wtf. That's a lot of moving around, so more opportunity for the virus to spread unfortunately. At the beginning when fires broke out here in southern CA, people had to stay in their own cars at evacuation centers. Wearing masks didn't matter.

I was at the Jackson County EXPO, the evac center for this area, and almost everyone is wearing masks, at least. Social distancing isn't possible, but other countermeasures are.

You do the best you can in an emergency. Sometimes best practices are simply impossible.

People are getting complacent. Not just in Quebec, but everywhere. People didn't expect this to drag on for so long, so they're falling into old habits.

You can say that again. Cases in BC have skyrocketed since August. We just set a new record of daily new cases reported a few days ago at 139. Things were really going well during June until all hell broke loose when parties start happening on Canada Day. Since then, it's been a loosing battle with parties, drumming circles, and large gatherings becoming a major problem.

That conspiracy is hilariously sad IMO, shows how little people actually know about science and tech.

Conservative Americans have been screaming for Bill Gates to be arrested for months because they believe he's gonna use COVID vaccines to implant microchips in them.

The only reason why anyone should be screaming for Gates to be arrested is for facilitating Microsoft's takeover of the home computing market and ensuring there'd be no viable alternative to Windows, something that lasted nearly 20 years, and for profiting off and enriching himself through his "charity". I guess we can't have things that make sense, though.

Exactly. We're still temperature checking people when we aren't assisting emergency services, and our drivers are at least wearing PPE when possible.

I passed by a public library acting as an information center for those that needed help from the aftermath from the local wildfire. They had caution tape set up and markers where people could stand six feet apart. Sign of the times.

Do you guys think this "pandemic" will make people wear masks for the rest of their lives? Fear? Social distancing?  Will it ever be the same?

After Spanish Flu it took the US like 3 years to get back to normal. Yes a vast majority of people will just blink like this never happen. Yes there will be those people who are scared half to death and wear masks everywhere. Though in a lot of areas in Asia I guess is common practice to wear masks when you're ill. It's to help protect people from getting sick. But eventually things will get back to where they were. We will all have a good laugh about how we survived 2020 and life will go on.

"We" have survived 2020?  That's a bit disrespectful to the people who have NOT, and may possibly NOT, have or will survive 2020.

I would really hate for someone who lost a friend, lover or family member who have just read what you said.

Talking about the country as a whole. You need to stop taking things out of context. Also I have know people who have died this year. But the rest of us live on. If you cant have a positive attitude with everything going on, then you might not survive the year. Staying positive is the only thing keeping some people together. Beside Covid, Ive know 3 people to have strokes, 1 of them died. Our Garage caught fire, l we have unrest in the streets. Entire towns are being burned down in at least 3 states. And you want to cry about that statement. And we are not even past the worst of it yet. Thats coming in November.

Well the NSA was caught years back with equipment in an AT&T data center. So I dont think its just companies tracking us.

First time reader long time writer here. I'll share my experience ig. I live in a big city (I'm leaving it ambiguous for reasons) in Manitoba Canada. I go to high school. The way it's being handled is you're at school every second day then home the next. Honestly I wish it was all at home cuz imo there's no good reason to be at school. There's been no hiccups (yet) though I feel like there will be. Personally I'm not scared or anything. I'm alert, and I understand the risks, but I'm not worrying, which is really nice. I have enough to worry about being a student and all.

Either @piratemonkey or quote me when responding to me. I won't see otherwise

Casino

Not sure how Vegas is doing. I can tell you that the Casino's in Detroit are back open at 50% occupancy I believe. Id imagine they would do something similar in Vegas, all the gambling addicts are not going to care about Covid, so they will at least make some money. I think tourism is kinda dead for the town at the moment. I can tell you that I WONT be going on any airplane any time soon, and its a long way from Michigan to Nevada.

its things like this that make me genuinely feel that humanity is doomed. we are going to destroy ourselves one day for sure. maybe this is the real great filter that every "intelligent" species in the universe destroys themselves from their own stupidity

Irresponsible person. I know the type though - the place I work offers essentially "unlimited" paid sick days if you can justify them (though realistically if you need more than a few days off here and there, you likely need to go on long term sick leave which isn't at full pay).

And yet, despite the fact that we have paid sick days, some of my coworkers (one in particular) still shows up at work every time he's got a cold or is visibly sick.

It's this mentality that "I must go to work unless I literally can't get up and walk out the door" - it's usually ingrained in people when they are younger and working hourly wage jobs where if you take a sick day, you lose pay, and then after they earn paid sick days at a new job, they keep that mentality.

It's annoying AF.

And this is even worse, since with COVID it can be serious if you catch it, whereas if you infect the office with a Cold, it's annoying, but largely harmless.

Falling apart? I think you mean 'fell apart'. They had mugshots of 7 people on the paper this morning who were arrested for looting, after the fires. Then the guy who knew a massive fire was roaring his way, so he ran out to the train tracks on the edge of town and lit another fire.

There's been 4 reported Arson fires here this summer. I don't know why. I suspect that people want the world to just END after dealing with Covid for 9 months.

People like that have been around since recorded history. Whether or not it's actually becoming worse? Hard to say. Certainly there are political and ecological reasons why some people are being pushed (or encouraged) beyond their limits to do these things.

I would hardly say that society is falling apart (or fell apart) as a whole though.

Mmmm, true.

I'm pretty sure that there would not have been 4 insanely serious arson fires, however, in such a short period of time, had COVID not been a thing.
