Are schools in session? OR are they doing online learning or both? My niece and  nephew are doing their stuff online for at least the first semester. Many of the districts around here are doing the same. Some are also doing 50% in session.

Highly depends on your state or province, and even among individual school boards.

Most places in Ontario are back to in-class - I believe that they are alternating between in-class and virtual learning, but that might not be for every scenario.

In person is 100% voluntary though - you could do home schooling or remote learning (virtual classes and assignments) if you so choose.

Here you can choose to do online if you wish. I know a lot of people are making that choice.

Here in Quebec (don't know about Ontario) it's all in person (primary and high school, not sure about technical schools ,colleges and universities).

And they extended CERB once more, at the previous $500 per week rate. Can't wait to relive the public spending 90s. Cuts, cuts, cuts. Taxes, taxes, taxes.

Well to be clear the last time something on this scale happened was like over 100 years ago. Yes this is going to hurt in the next coming years. But maybe the power that be can prepare for this to happen again. At the end of the day Id like to think we have learned a bit about the Virus at this point so that we can start getting more businesses back open and people back to work. Part of the issue in the US is that many people were making more on unemployment than what they were working. So...... thats cause some people not to want to go back to work. Thats also caused essential workers to feel like they got the short end of the stick.

No nations economy can afford to stay shut down for an extended period. Here in Michigan we got out numbers down, more business have started opening up. Though there are issues with some like Movie Theaters. Not sure how the hell they are going to open. Because they are not necessary the most sanitary places. Bar's are another issue. Because people pack in to them and breath on each other. But then again, we also dont want them going under. Because the alternative to the bar is the liquor store, and here in Michigan, those stores were labeled essential.

The company I work for saw an over 80% drop in trophy supply sales. Lucky for us our insulated mugs, cups, tumblers and water bottles are carrying us. Otherwise Id be out of a job right now. August was the first month that our company saw an increase in sales from the previous year since about April. To keep in mind, some of our customers just work out of their house, those ones are going to be fine. Its the ones who own store fronts that are pretty much screwed, epically if they relied just not Trophies alone.

So in a way its a balancing act on getting businesses open, but also making sure we are staying safe. The other side of it is the supply chain is pretty much screwed still. Ive read reports that some items that you used to be able to buy a stores, may no longer be available period.

At the end of the day, hopefully we all learn something from this. I know my family has. We will be keeping water and food in somewhat of a stock pile after this. The other thing is we might need to invest in to a bidet attachment for our toilet.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

We got a check for $1200 back in June? Or maybe May? And then the government decided that multi-billion dollar industries were more important, and spent $3 trillion on them, instead.

So, when this is all over, everyone is going to be broke as a joke, except the Millionaire and Billionaire CEO's and upper management jerks.

Ah the American way. To be clear I did hear about another stimulus check. Im wondering if they are going to push it out till after the election? Maybe some of the politicians might want to push it out to the Lame Duck period after the election, where they can pretty much do anything without repercussions?

Without them we dont have jobs or an economy. Look at the airline industry. I wonder how many companies are going to go bust? How many jobs are going to be lost? Are we going to bail their asses out?  But I do agree, that some of theses companies didn't need the money. Also the banks were the ones handing the money out but were being real prickish when it came to small businesses. Personally it would have just be better of the government handed out the money themselves than trust an industry who does another but screw people over.

CERB in Canada gives $2000 CDN per month. It's been as such since March.

First few months were justified but they've had plenty of time to go job searching or try retooling since then.

Plenty of jobs available, especially since Trudeau had the wisdom to give $1250 per month to students.

They could keep the subsidy unless they worked for $1000 or more, so there were many schemes with their employers to stick to part-time.

That's why giving a 75 %+ wage subsidy makes more sense than giving $2000 to people to sit on the couch and watch TV.

Here in Michigan you can get a max of $362 a week for up to 20 weeks. Then add $600 on to that. So a max of over $900 a week. I bring home a little over $700 in a two week period. So you can see why people dont want to go back to work.

There's absolutely no way we're getting another stimulus check. It's literally not even being talked about. The House and the Senate will never agree on what to do, so yeah, it's DOA.

Our government has basically screwed everything up. They have basically listened to economic advisors, then done the opposite of what they suggested. The economy in the US is going to have severe problems when this is all over. Then on top of that, the entire West Coast just burned down, and there's absolutely NOTHING that they are talking about to help out with this. I haven't seen an updated count, but last I saw, over 2,300 houses in the county I live in burned down alone, and most of the housing that burned down was low cost trailer homes. The government in Washington DC gives absolutely not craps about those people, and just because most of them didn't have insurance, oh well, they're on their own.

We would have actually come out ahead if we didn't have a central government in the US, since they've done nothing but screw everything up.

I sincerely hope that Washington, Oregon, and California split off from the US and like... Become a new Canadian state, or something. I doubt California would, they would likely go to Mexico.

Actually it was. Both sides were in agreement that it needed to happen. The issue is while a check was proposed, some people were trying to slide other things in to the bill that were unrelated. Thats why things have stalled. But with the election coming up, they might want to wait and see the results. Once the election is over and the results are in, the lame duck session starts and they can get away with bloody murder because things are set in stone.

Well the economy already had issues. With have sever wealth inequality. But last I checked, we are still going strong. Granted with a few less small businesses. And their are SHIT tons of jobs.

Well, house insurance is the home owners responsibility. Our garage caught fire the Friday before Labor Day. The insurance company is currently hashing it out. Not sure why people own a home and dont insure it, seems like a bad idea to me.

As much as sometimes it seems like it would be nice for some states to leave the Union, you're correct - there are no provisions in the Constitution to allow a state to leave. It would require an Amendment in order to do so. And as much as some Red states would love to see California leave, they will sure as hell miss California's economic output soon afterwards. There's no way that you'd get all 50 states to agree on an Amendment allowing any state to leave - let alone the most populous and rich one (to be fair, California could probably do alright as their own country - assuming they don't bankrupt themselves).

Why do you think that California would want to join Mexico, of all places? Like, yeah, Mexico has some awesome destinations, but it's not that good of a place to live. I imagine that California would much rather join Canada than join Mexico. California and Canada share a lot of the same political leanings. Though California would become the largest province by a large margin if this happened (both economically and population wise). California literally has more people in it than All of Canada. If they did join the Dominion, I think the other provinces (particularly Alberta and Ontario) would make it a condition that California be split up into several provinces to balance out the power they receive (because otherwise, California would literally be able to dictate any election, and anything based on population - something Alberta is already touchy about with QC and Ontario).

This is how the last civil war started. Hundreds of Thousands of Americans died on both sides of the conflict. It would likely be millions with todays technology. There are no legal way for states to leave the Union.

When you're really, really poor, and you can only afford the cost of your house and property taxes, you might not actually have enough money left to actually pay for insurance. This is a story I've heard from multiple people lately, and it seems to be a theme in this area. These people are on fixed incomes, so COVID didn't really effect them much, however, the price of stuff like food and toiletries has skyrocketed here. Fruit and vegetables have gone up in price here, milk is more expensive, and toilet paper especially has increased in price, so insurance is more likely to be unaffordable for people.

As for the civil war, it was slightly different. For one, we had a competent president, who seemed to want to keep the union together, whereas right now, I think Trump would enthusiastically endorse the West Coast fucking off; however, the money generated by taxes might be the only thing that would dampen the Enthusiasm. That said, there are a lot of people who actively want a chance at 'shooting those crying liberals', or something along those lines, and I have heard so many 'pro-civil war take 2' sentiments from people, that there's a chance we'll have one regardless of what happens to the states on the West Coast.

California might already be bankrupt. The cost of fighting the fires is going to be horribly expensive. And yes, I agree that there's no way that the other states would allow California to leave the union, they want the tax money too much.

As far as California becoming part of Mexico, it's mostly due to the population. A lot of Californians are hispanic, speak Spanish as either a first or second language, and they're geographically close. Though, the North and South of the state are almost two different states already, just by virtue of distance. It wouldn't be difficult to break California up into 6 individual provinces; there's been proposed plans to do this in the past (albiet, as states, not provinces, but you get the point). I think the biggest reason, though, would be to piss off the current administration. Trump: The president who lost the world's 5th largest economy to Mexico! would be the legacy.

Man, all of this talk about Canada got my memory jogged. I remember going to Washington DC for a school trip when I was in Middle School. We were walking around at around 11pm, and we were at the Canadian embassy. They have this neat little acoustics chamber in the entry way, and we were messing around in it, when the door opened. We were sad, thinking we had disturbed the ambassador, but we were wrong. The Canadian Ambassador had just returned from a business trip and was still up, jet lag and all, and noticed us, so he invited us in for Tea. So, we sat and chatted with the Ambassador, in the Embassy, at midnight, and had a wonderful time. :D

I'd love to move to another country. I should get back into learning Japanese, and go over there for a while.
