Contact lens vs Glasses?

Glasses. I've tried contacts and they are a bitch to deal with, sure you eventually get used to it, but nooope.

wife has been using both, contacts for her was a matter of getting the right optometrist, they played around with different lenses, and she got something that did not make her eyes dry... think she wears weekly lenses, so they get scrapped every week.

 

like her more with glasses though.. personally i have had a hidden lazy eye.. so i´ve been compensating all my life, now getting older at 41 years, and my eyes being a bit less compensating and having 1.xx and 0.75, i easily begin to see double especially if i am a bit tired..

 

so i´ve bought some lindberg titanium, hardly feel them, but still can´t get used to turning my head instead of my eyes when something enters from outside my FOV

Glasses are SOOOOO much better than lens.

 

Seriously only people who wear lens instead is for aesthetic appeal.

 

Glasses are safer, more comfortable, requires less maintenance, lasts for a much longer time.

I generally don't wear my glasses, but I'd prefer them over contacts. I don't like things touching my eyes.

This. I've had glasses since like 10 and these days I just look "wrong" to myself without them. It's a part of me, of my visage. Even though they can be a b!tch to clean sometimes.

 

I've had and still occasionally wear contact lenses but I only had daily ones, and even then I had some trouble with "additional veins forming in a corner of one eye due to air restriction of the lense".

self-dimming glass lenses are freaking awesome. On my last pair I acutally got some new type that will dimm slightly even inside, and it's a godsend for driving and sitting in a sunny classroom. Plus people don't see where I look

I've only ever worn glasses.  For about 22 years now.  In my line of work it's not a good idea to wear contacts; if I were to get something in my eye it would be hard to wash it out if there was also a lens in there. 

 

They're easier too. Don't have to remember to take them out at night.

i think a downside to glasses is that when you go outside from a conditioned building they fog up. annoying but same time pretty funny when your friends happen too

I prefer glasses with transitions over contacts, personally, but I just bought a set of prescription sunglasses for driving.

 

Contacts can be nice too. I found that grad student workday hours (i.e., you work all of them) meshed better with glasses, for me, and haven't gone back.

Ewwww. Transitions are terrible. I remember when they came out years ago and recently they accidentally put them in my glasses and I thought I would give them a shot since the technology has to have improved a little. Nope. Still god awful and you look dweeby. I prefer a nice pair of polarized prescription sunglasses and normal glasses

Contact lenses are the best shit ever. I hate how glasses look and feel. Glasses are always in the way, you can't wear sunglasses over them so you need second pair or those self changing thingies which always look weird when they are in transition, in summer it's extra hot behind them, in winter they are constantly fogging up, if you bend forward they swing away from the face, if you make the nose thing tighter they are uncomfortable, they scratch and smudge, you have to be careful not to sit on them, lose them at sea, they are annoying at sports and I could go on and on about them.

 

I don't know who brought this trend of granny glasses and how proudly young people wear that ugly oversized window frame shit, but I can't stand them.

 

Contact lenses have none of that bullshit and if you keep just a very basic hygienic level, you'll be fine. Once you find good lenses that are comfortable, have alright price and provide good vision, you stick with them. Problem solved. You stick them in your eyes in the morning and take them out before sleep in the evening. If you have good lenses, you sometimes don't even have to do that. When I'm on business trips I always just sleep in them and it's fine coz I don't want to carry all the stuff with me.

 

Most people get some garbage <30Dk/t hydrogel lenses for trial and then give up because they are just shit as they are suffocating the eyes, especially first time they have a nap and they wake up with dracula eyes. Get something proper silicone-hydrogel like B+L Ultra, Miru, AirOptix or Biofinity. They all have Dk/t over 120 and up to 160 which is enough oxygen permeability to use such lenses for sleeping. And they are also super comfy over day to a point that I often went to bed and remembered I still have lenses in my eyes (I usually take them out every evening).

 

I've tested basically all lenses in existence over years I've been using them and some are better than others. You just have to risk it and try them if you want to find ultra comfy ones, but stick with high Dk/t, that's basically an universal rule.

 

Eye surgery, after I did research, I'm sticking with lenses. Until they can fix the retina using laser without cutting into cornea with scalpel, I'm staying away from it. Especially when you learn that cornea never actually fully heals back after it's peeled away for laser treatment of retina.

And even then, I'd say it depends of the sport concerned... Plus... I bought sport glasses for my daughter (aikido, wall-climbing).

I was just about to say I might be the only person here who recommends contacts over lenses

 

I have been wearing glasses since I was 8. When I was 16 or 17, I had them fly off my face when on a roller coaster, and I went to my mother and within a couple of days  went and got contacts and never looked back *pun intended*. 

 

The first week took some getting used to putting them in and taking them out on my own, but once I got the hang of it, i can do both of them in like six seconds without a mirror. I take them out every night, so I dont have to worry about sleeping in them and peeling them off after a week. I generally wear glasses on the weekend. After nearly two decades of having to wear giant focal rings to allow me to be less blind than a bat, I'll take the ability to have actual sunglasses over slightly "transitioning" glasses any day (polarized no less. I hate just "black out" sunglasses, they dont actually protect your eyes from UV rays.)

 

Things to keep in mind that most people dont know about; Astigmatism (something I have) which is basically your eye muscles pulling on your eyeballs, causing your eye to be slightly misshaped (it's not hurting you, it just affects normal contacts) so you need "toric" lenses which are special shaped.

People always say "start wearing lenses gradually and increase time". I just slammed them in my eyes and wore them whole day straight away. That was like 10 years ago. I just wear better ones now that are even more comfortable than crappy hydrogel ones I used to wear back then.

That's not true at all. I don't give a single damn about my aesthetic appeal, yet I still chose for contacts after two months of glasses. I needed the glasses so my eyes could rest so we could get a proper measurement of my eyes, but the plan was always to get contacts afterwards (if they'd work for me, they sadly didn't work for my mother).

 

I like contacts because I can just lay down, hug people, and get close to things without the fear of crushing something. Not having something on my head that can fall off, be damaged, is in the way, or is uncomfortable is also great. One of the things I hated with glasses is that I always had to clean them really well, every single day, sometimes multiple times a day. Takes ages. Contacts take a few min in the morning and one during the evening, but at least nothing during the day. Contacts are great when cycling, so I can wear proper glasses to protect my eyes from the wind - my glasses did something but were always slightly too small, sadly. I don't know what maintenance is needed for contacts, or I've been doing something wrong for the past nearly a year.

Buy better ones that have rounded edges (B+L puts lots of effort into that with PureVision 2 or Ultra lenses) instead of sharp edges. Also make sure you have them in correctly (cup shape, not saucer shape!). Lastly, you might have incorrect diameter (DIA) or base curvature (BC) of the lens. I've noticed that as diameter is larger, I need smaller base curvatures, otherwise lenses aren't comfortable. Not all lenses even have an option, some only come in one dimension.

 

Poor Dk/t might also contribute to "itching" feeling if this feeling happens gradually over time.Rule of thumb, stick with lenses that have Dk/t over 100. Human eye needs Dk/t of around 80 iirc to have an unrestricted supply of oxygen for daily use.

It's more imprtant with contacts though. I'm developing astigmatism in my right eye, so when I wear glasses my eyes are good but when I wear contacts, vision in my right eye is slightly blurrier than my left. So it depends on the level
