SaltTel - Apparently an 8th gen Core i3 is better than a 3rd gen ryzen

If they can find a test were it can cross the finish line first, they technically can.

this is why compartive marketing is bullshit.

Intel doesn't very specific which test and app they use. How do they come up with the figure 65% faster overall?

My Fiat Panda is much faster than your Porsche 911, when your car is out of fuel, you have a tyre puncture.....and my car is as least as fast as yours when we both stuck in a traffic jam. Conclusion, Fiat Panda is 70% faster than a Porsche 911.

I love how everyone is arguing but no ones knows which tests they used or under what conditions.  But they are still certain it is wrong and lying.

It's just marketing, you won't stop it, you can't control it. Just be thankful they have footnotes qualifying their claims so we can know how they concluded what they did.  Some companies don't even do that and make you wade through a 30 page PDF only to realize they claim nothing of real importance.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

The source article, conveniently, neglected to post any images of what the subscripts were referencing. Those subscripts would have given more details on the tests. While it's crap, cherry picking benchmarks isn't false advertising. Your analogy would be false advertising.

That's not 3rd gen Ryzen, it's Zen+.

That said, the i3 could certainly outperform the Ryzen chip quite significantly in non threaded tasks. It's pretty far ahead in IPC. I guess the other area it would win is in battery life, by a mile.

It all depends what you want to do with the machine.

This. From my earlier play with power limiting on the desktop CPUs, Zen 2 certainly does seem to scale better to lower powers than Coffee Lake (I'm not buying Ice Lake just to see if it changed on current 10nm), although something will have to be done about the IOD. A monolothic APU should be sweet at the lower TDP range.

EASY! Find a road that's very narrow with tall speed bumps. The low and wide Porsche won't finish the race. Panda wins every time!

because it is undoubtably irrefutably not better? it may be in some VERY VERY specific tasks, but claiming that its "up to" 65% better in overall performance isnt just misleading, its flat out lying

Saying that it is "up to x% faster" isn't technically incorrect. It could be pretty misleading especially because we want to read that as "it is 65% faster" instead.

In my road a Panda is far quicker than my neighbours Ferrari as the twat cannot get it over the speed bumps without getting out at every one of the 7 and putting little bits of wood under his wheels. By the time he gets his car out of the street the panda driver will have finished his shopping and be on his way back home. Makes me laugh every time I see the chap doing it, even more so as he is a town councillor who campaigned for the 20mph speed limit to be put on the road in the first place, and five years on when he gets himself a low slung sports car it comes back and bites him in the sills.

The thing is, though, we may have reached a place where the differences between CPU's are so small that a generations difference no longer makes a HUGE difference.

The difference between 8086 and 80286 and 80386 was HUGE revolutionary quantum leaps.  Like comparing a canoe to a sailing ship of the line, to a steam dreadnought.

Now A generations difference is infinitesimal.

Like cars they can all drive you on the highway at any speed any normal person would need.

I would go one further and ban them from directly comparing with the competition.  They can only use the superior adverbs if they can show their product performs better in every test, not just one or two.

Yeah... so we've seen the surface products with zen... and it isn't pretty. I mean it would be ok for broadwell-u era but that's about it.

Mind you, I expect there are still a lot of low hanging optimizations available to the platform, and zen2 should really really help, but it isn't wrong to say that **RIGHT NOW**, buying amd in a ultrabook is a mistake in basically every fashion.

Note the **RIGHT NOW** part.

Yeah, he's asking where in Intel's marketing (which probably isn't their marketing), or in the article.
