Today Nintendo revealed the Switch Lite. It comes in at $199 — $100 less than the base unit. The Switch Lite is designed explicitly as a handheld: you can’t connect it to your TV, and the Joy-Con controllers are built right in. “The two systems will complement each other and co-exist in the marketplace,” There are a number of improvements with the Switch Lite. It’s significantly lighter. The Switch Lite also feels more sturdy since the Joy-Con controllers are now part of the device. The controller layout is largely identical on the Lite, though the new Switch has a proper d-pad, replacing the not-so-precise directional buttons on the original. Nintendo says the Lite features “slightly” improved battery life — the company wouldn’t get any more specific than that. It’s also just a really nice piece of hardware. The Lite comes in multiple colors at launch — yellow, grey, and turquoise — as well as a special light grey Pokémon Sword and Shield edition. Despite the change in size, the resolution for the Switch Lite’s display remains the same 720p as the original Switch, though curiously you can no longer adjust the brightness. There are some other nice touches as well, like bezels and an air vent that match the color of the hardware, so they blend in better. Overall it’s a solid device, and exactly what you’d expect from this kind of refresh. According to Nintendo’s Bowser, the decision to focus on a portable-only option was based on watching how people used the Switch. But that new design does come with some tradeoffs. The built-in controls and their lack of detachable controllers, HD rumble, and IR sensors creates some small compatibility issues. If you want to use motion controls to catch monsters in Pokémon Let’s Go, or play a game like 1-2 Switch that requires them, you’ll need to purchase an additional pair of Joy-Con separately. Currently, all Switch game packages specify when titles are playable in portable mode, and Nintendo says similar labels will be applied to the digital eShop. If you attempt to purchase a game that’s incompatible with the Switch Lite from the eShop, the company says you’ll receive a warning.

 

My Thoughts:

All that's left is the more powerful switch version to be released. Regardless, this seems like a much better option for those who just wanted a handheld system instead of a portable console. I do hate that they're be some incompatibility with games which seems like Nintendo didn't think that far ahead.

If they don't come out with and call the (possibly) more powerful version a Switch switch switch OR a Switch Cubed then I'll be disappointed :P

To make it cheaper, they had to remove some of the modularity/feature set, so this makes sense. People who care about these should get the "original" version, and people who only want to play Mario party with their friend on the go can pick this up.

OH MAN! I NEED the yellow one!!!!

But I am actually very surprised; I did not AT ALL expect a Switch mini/Lite like this, with non-removable controllers. That being the entire marketing point of the switch of course.. 

 

In the past Nintendo has used the 'Lite' term with the Nintendo DS Lite, which was a sleeker, lighter Nintendo DS with no removed features, so this seems kind odd to be honest.

I like the price now considering that there's no way to play motion-based games on it, and the small screen size by today's standards, maybe a used/refurb Switch would be a better option.

hmm... no hdmi, no brightness adjustments, no special controller features... it would have to be cheaper for me to accept the compromises. Besides these don't seem like the kind of features that would impact the price much (except the non-detachable controllers).

That's true but playing with friends is one of the things that will be impacted the most since it doesn't have a video output. This basically takes the place of the 3ds.

I hope you never run a business, because you're guaranteed to run it into the ground with bad decisions.

 

The Switch is succeeding because it's accessible, flexible and... y'know, fun.  You can play it the way you like to play, whether it's handheld or on your TV; you don't have to spend a lot even for the 'full' Switch; and crucially, it has a killer game lineup.  Consoles shouldn't be just about spec sheets, and it's unfortunate that you don't understand that.

Side question. Back when I had a Gameboy advance and DS lite the battery would last a solid week or more and that was playing every single day for hours on end. What changed to cause handheld devices to have shit battery life? My current hunch is graphical fidelity improved vastly requiring more computing power and this raised the tdp

needed all while batteries haven’t really improved

Much larger screens and much more demanding games.  Remember, even the most powerful chip in the DS Lite ran at 67MHz, and it wasn't exactly handling much.  The Switch is handling at least a 5.5-inch 720p screen, and it's running games that are supposed to match home consoles (albeit more PS3/X360 than current-gen).  That kind of demand adds up, and lithium-ion batteries have only advanced so much.

A lot of friends who were hesitant on a switch are now going to buy this one I'm pretty sure. I was also hoping for a more powerful switch that was rumored as well.

Processors, memory, and the rest of the console have progressed meaning higher power draw. Battery tech on the other hand... has stagnated.

I just want a version that is console only. It would be cheaper as they don't need a screen or battery, and it would be a little more powerful because of better cooling. I personally don't give a crap about mobile gaming, when I'm out I'm usually way too busy to be playing a game, and even if I do have a moment, I prefer to just pull out my earbuds and listen to music or watch a video, because mobile gaming just isn't a great experience for me anyway for various reasons. If I'm on some big trip or something I just bring my phone's clip on bluetooth controller and I have endless games via emulators, I also have my laptop too... I realize I might be in the minority here, but the Switch's mobile features (for me) just add cost and make the console run at lower clock speeds. I really want to try Smash Ultimate at some point, but I'm just kinda holding out in hopes for a home console. I'm sure it won't happen, so I'll have to give in at some point, but oh well.

There's a lot to like about this announcement but there's one thing I wish it had that it doesn't and that's the ability to connect to a TV. I understand that they want to save money and it's one of the drawbacks of the Lite compared to the full on Switch but one of the best things about the Switch is being able to connect a load of joycons and hold a gaming party. I get that's basically going to be one of the selling points of the Flagship over the Lite but given the Nintendo Switch costs almost as much now, 2 years into its life as the much more powerful PS4 did at the same point (which I know considering I bought one at that point) and the difference in both the size and the price of the respective game libraries, I would have been very interested in a cheaper Switch I could still use at home. 

 

I might pick this up but it's looking less likely and more that I'll either wait for a Switch 2 or for a price drop. Or I might even get a used Switch cause I really want to play Breath of the Wild and Pokemon Sword/Shield but I'm not home from Uni long enough to complete those on my sister's switch.

I feel the same way. I NEVER play video games while I’m out of the house. When I’m out, it’s because I’m busy. A home console would be a great idea for the next switch.
