Origin Users complaining their privacy settings have been updated to "show real name" without their knowledge

Syntaxvgm

I've seen this talked about in a few places now.

Source via Google Translate

Something strange seems to be going on with Origin , online distribution platform and game client from EA for PC. Many users have noticed that Origin suddenly shows their real name on their profile, instead of their nickname. This option is indeed in Origin, but the users in question report that they had this option off and that it was automatically turned on. You can check this setting yourself here . There you can also immediately indicate who can view your profile.

Basically what's happening is Origin is defaulting your privacy settings so that everyone can view your profile and it uses your real name, even if you set it not to.
I've just checked mine and sure enough, it was changed to these settings. I know I didn't have these settings as recent as last month.

I'm not sure how widespread this is or why it is happening, no statement from EA yet too early, but it does seem to be happening.

This isn't the first time EA has tried this shit, many years back they required everyone to upgrade their EA account on their website and despite asking for a nickname it defaulted to your real name. It's possible I'm misremembering as it was a long time ago (like NFS Underground era) but IIRC there was no way to change it until everyone complained about it then EA added the option to use nickname instead.

Guess what, Blizzard has this shit enabled by default too. They call it "ReaI ID" and I was never asked about it, it was just enabled by default. With my real fucking name. Are you companies retarded or something? Why the fuck do you think I'd want my real name to be posted online by default ffs?

If you don't want your real name out there, don't give it out in the first place.
As such, simply edit your profile, because it's entirely optional whether or not you provide them that information.

iJdEZCJ.png

On Origin's website and on your profile, just click on the big orange button at the top right that says "edit on ea.com".

From there, in About Me at the top of the page, click on EDIT right beside "Basic Information" to see the screen above.

You can also choose who can see your account... Change that setting to Friends or No One to avoid having some weirdo look you up.

Bad news for me, (if) I had it disabled, it was re-enabled

God news for me, I didnt use my full name, just a nickname

Best news:

Spoiler

It seems I had my profile set to private, so no one would have seen it anyways. At least these settings did not seem to change.

I didn't give them my real name in the first place but it stayed disabled.

On a side note, seems like I blocked someone called ExtraThiccc. Damn shame, I don't know what I was thinking back then...

Checked my account, and all is good.  Profile is still set so no one can view it, and 'Real Name' option is unchecked.  Though to be fair, I don't think I entered it into my profile anyway.  Having said that, considering I don't play any multi-player games on Origin (and very little overall), it probably wouldn't have been a big deal.

I'm glad I put People's Empire of China or something as rediculous for my real name. The only reason I even have an Origin account was to try out Apex Legend, which I uninstalled along with Origin after a day or so as it's not my cup of tea. I guess if I ever wanna buy a game with credit card on Origin, I'll have to use something like privacy.com to "make" a credit card with the owner's name as "People's Empire of China" lolol
