Are you ready to donate your organs to Apple? Yes? Good! Cos in IOS 10 you can donate your organs to people if they need it.

Apple's next software update for the the iPhone will make it easier for users to register as organ donors. The company is adding the new feature to its Health app, and will let users sign up to become organ, eye, and tissue donors "with just a few taps." Registrations submitted on the iPhone will be sent straight to the National Donate Life Registry. The feature will be available in fall this year when iOS 10 is launched, although the software will also be available via a public beta later this month.

A shortage of organ donations has been a longstanding difficulty in the US, and Apple CEO Tim Cook told the Associated Press that the problem hit home for him after the death of the company's co-founder Steve Jobs in 2011. Jobs suffered from a rare type of pancreatic cancer, and eventually received a liver transplant in 2009 after enduring what Cook called an "excruciating" wait. Jobs even turned down the offer of a transplant from Cook himself, according to one biography of the Apple co-founder.

 

The National Kidney Foundation says are currently 121,678 people waiting for lifesaving organ transplants in the US, with 100,791 of these in need of a kidney. Each day, an average of 22 people die in need of an organ transplant, while a patient is added to the waiting list every 10 minutes. In May, the White House announced a new effort to close the gap between "the 95 percent of Americans who support organ donation and the roughly 50 percent who are registered organ donors," pledging to work with Facebook, Google, and Twitter to improve awareness. Now it seems Apple can be added to that list.

"With the updated Health app, we’re providing education and awareness about organ donation and making it easier than ever to register. It’s a simple process that takes just a few seconds and could help save up to eight lives," said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, in a press statement. "Together with Donate Life America, we’re excited to deliver this new feature to iPhone users in the US with iOS 10."

 

Well ok fair enough. I was being kind of sarcastic at the beginning. But seriously, this is kinda weird. Why do you need an app to help you donate an organ?

More people need to be organ donors. If this increases the numbers, why not?

Its just a way to promote being an organ doner :) its really cool

Don't give me a sappy love story on how jobs died. The man denied treatment and only relied on herbs and religious ways. He could have survived easily but instead he didn't and took the company to the grave with him. Why don;t you focus on other things apple. Debugging IOS, better mac pros, mac book pros, and the list goes on

in germany you can be an official organ donor and get sliced up right after, or even before death so that organs are still fresh and bloody warm :)

Kind of agree, while I'm sure this feature wasn't hard to add... the legal hoop that they had to jump through were probably pretty great.

Just think a tech company should spend their time on improving their tech... this impacts me little to none as a mobile phone user... Sure if I or someone I knew/loved needed an organ this app would be AMAZING but the truth is... I'll have to buy that when the time comes. Right now I just want my tech to work.

 

I never really identified myself as an apple consumer but I am not against the idea. The problem is their products are not price competitive. OSX, FCP, and Garageband are great. I dislike their hardware and mobile devices very much so. Since I am not their typical client it won't impact me at all... Just seems like and odd move for a tech company they has continuously released DoA products to markets.. I am looking at you Apple Watch!

Also the whole blocking spotify updates on IOS because it competes with Apple music is just childish. All my macs are from 2008 or before. FCP is great considering it is a one time payment of $399 no Adobe $49 a month, which really adds up. Garage band is free and the OSX optimization is pretty insane. They just are focusing all on their phones and dumb software to go on it that no one will use

You don't, but this will make it a lot easier for people to sign up for organ donations, which is needed at this point. There are a LOT of people on lists waiting for organs they need to live, I think this is a nice touch from Apple to raise awareness.

I was just thinking about this. Why should I donate my organs so a hospital or medical group could make a shitload of money off of my dead body. On the other hand, why not give me a measly million dollars so I can live a better life and in return I will sign the forms to let my organs be harvested...??? Like Bogey used to say, "nothing for nothing"! kiss my ass.

To save lives? Sure, it's stupid how much profit is made off of health care, but refusing to donate organs (and save lives) to prevent profiteering is kind of ridiculous. 

 

The bigger reason/s to not be an organ donor are more out of paranoia that

  • A doctor/emt/etc... may choose to let someone die so they can help someone else
  • You become a target for someone who needs an organ and wants to move up the last faster
