Sure the organ donation is good but paying $4k for a mac pro with quad core xeon, 12gb of DDR3, 256gb of storage, and dual firepro D300s. That is more then double the price it is to buy the components. Now people will say Apple is overpriced which they usually are but they are overpriced for current gen stuff which is a little more acceptable. Also it does not cost $1,300 for 52gb of DDR3. Just stupid. If they kept the price the same but used updated xeons, DDR4, and updated firepros I would have no problem. Not to mention the Imacs just thermal throttle to death and you can only change the RAM.

So you're paying for performance more so than hardware. Now, it's still ridiculous that the Mac Pro is running Ivy Bridge/HD7xxx-gen hardware (and that the 13"/15" Pros are running Broadwell/Haswell), and that upgrade costs are also overpriced, but the performance is technically there (when using optimized applications). That still doesn't excuse the steep upgrade costs and outdated hardware, but in practice it's not as bad as it sounds.

The efficiency drops when it is anything outside of apple though. AdobeCC does not run nearly as well. Well then again it doesn't run well on anything

This is extremely good news. I'm already an organ donor, and I have an Android, but I'm still really happy that more people might sign up to be an organ donor. 

 

As to anyone here who is criticizing organ donating, you probably haven't been in a situation that required an organ transplant.

 

My Dad has needed two liver transplants (I can't remember the name of the liver disease that required the transplant off the top of my head); after the first transplant the disease came back and he needed another one.

 

The only real way to move up in a waiting list is to be closer to dying. My Dad probably wouldn't be here if the person in front of him was on vacation when a liver became available (he had less than a month to live roughly). Anyone who thinks that they shouldn't become a donor because they aren't getting anything in return is being EXTREMELY self centered. How much good are those organs to you if you're dead?

I am fairly sure FCP is simply using QuickSync. You could get the same "optimization" on a PC running Windows if you wanted.

Here in Italy, family decides if you haven't left a note, and most of the time it's a yes. Plus usually you get a lot of extra care, there are special procedures and tests.

 

I know my point could be slightly subjective since my father had 2 kidney transpalnts :P

Why in god's name did HardwareCanucks pair a Windows "Mac Pro" alternative with consumer grade GPU's? Maxwell ones at that? Sure, they can do CUDA to some degree, but their FP performance is gag inducingly bad, no ECC VRAM, etc...

 

Now, of course, many people will say "Well you don't need FirePro's or Quadro's". And well, it depends. In many cases, you're right. If you're just doing some basic video editing or whatever, then sure, use consumer cards, but that's not an apples to apples comparison.

 

For what it's worth, I do believe that many people buying Mac Pro's (or workstations with Workstation Grade GPU's) often don't need the capabilities they are buying, and a consumer GPU is often just fine. But there is a time and place for each type of component.

IIRC the video was pointing out the level of optimization in OSX/FCP -- and for video rendering (youtube videos/home videos/etc...) is there any reason you would need FP64/ECC VRAM?

Indeed, when video rendering, you are correct, FP64 would not be needed. ECC VRAM however, could be useful. It's certainly not needed, and I would only ever recommend it if you had an excess budget, so may as well? But there is the possibility of corrupted VRAM causing a bad export/render. I have no idea how common that is, but I imagine it's a fairly unlikely occurrence.

 

What might be useful for video rendering (well, more specifically the pre-rendering Editing phase), is 10-bit colour support and all of that expanded colour stuff that a Quadro would offer over a consumer GPU. IIRC, this is one of the reasons why Edzel used to (still? No idea what his current setup is) have a Titan and a Quadro in the same machine.

For encoding? You bet.

 

You can't magically "optimize" something to make a mobile i7 with integrated graphics match high end desktop hardware. Software isn't magic. It kind of bothers me that people are so quick to dismiss everything related to Apple and performance as just being "software optimization". It's the same with the iPhone. It got a massive GPU, a really wide and high end CPU, a freaking NVMe storage solution, and people still go "iOS is so optimized" whenever they see that it performs well.

 

And yes, Final Cut X uses QuickSync when it can. That's why even the Macbook Pro 13" beats the living crap out of the Mac Pro, despite having waaaaay less horse power in this benchmark. That's because the Mac Pro 2013 does not have QuickSync support. It's not magic. It's the beauty of having fixed-function hardware.

And if you are wondering, Adobe Premier does not support QuickSync. I don't use Adobe Premier but from what I can tell their encoder is actually really bad. It would be great if they could just replace it with FFmpeg.
