illegal to copy what you've bought.... again..... in the uk

Angelus2141

original article

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/33566933/ripping-music-and-films-illegal-again-after-high-court-overturns-new-law

It means consumers can't technically copy a CD they own and use one version in the car and another at home.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            Court action was rare under the previous law and the industry often turned a blind eye to people copying data for personal use.

These are the two factors that stand out for me. Firstly this means if you have old songs or stuff thats not on itunes you have to carry the cds with you everywhere if you want to listen to them. Not only that but would mean youd have to buy a CD player. No one is going to do this. It would basically mean that companies such as apple could loose revenue since the device they have cant store this music or that a person would have to buy the song multiple times on multiple platforms.

There is an arguement that people could stream from there home pc to a device but this wouldnt work either I mean if you purchase it through itunes and stream it to an iphone sure. but what if the music is only available from an old CD you cant rip it to the pc.  Not to mention the data charges people not on unlimited plans or in non-wifi areas could incurr just for playing music.

And the last part is what really grinds my gears if the courts didnt take action why bother making it a law that says you cant. Its like all those old daft laws. stupid things that say you cant juggle geese while walking backward down a light path at night.

Not to mention the possible ramifications this could bring about with other products. Will i be banned from jailbreaking my iphone, or installing an old version of android because the phones maker says what I have is right in their eyes for my device and im not allowed to copy or alter it in anyway and yes I know altering is different to copying but im still doing something with software/data that the developer didnt envisage and believes is wrong which isnt a great leap from what the music industry is saying

So how many years is it for ripping disks?

Well this law is stupid, some devices don't accept cd's (phones for example) So even if i DO buy the cd, i can't put the music on it.

What i would do is go f you and just go straight to pirating. I mean it doesn't matter if you buy it or not, it's illegal anyway.

Yea... This is a bad idea UK.

And to that, I say this:

I own a couple of Emerson, Lake and Palmer albums that have DVDs with the FLAC files on the disc. It was clear that Sony Music intended for someone to use those FLAC files, like putting them onto a portable music player, since they're not accessible through the DVD menus.

And as much as I love bands like Yes, ELP, Mike Oldfield......if I already bought their album once and still have it in some way, I will extend their life as far as I can stretch them. The only times it's been different are when I bought them on another physical format like vinyl, or if I wanted a digital version because it was cheap anyway.

Oh, and it's none of the High Court's business, nor is it of UK Music, what I do with my music if I'm listening to it for personal use.

I bought The Wall on CD for £20 already, and on vinyl for £22 because what vinyl collection is complete without it (which, incidentally, came with a code to an official website where I can download the MP3s), so as far as I'm concerned, it's the music industry that needs to adapt and not the consumers.

This is what happens, ladies and gentlemen, when you have idiot politicians who put their own gain in front of agenda so as to screw anyone who does not conform. The UK sucks......and if Scotland separates, I'm moving to them. Because they're actually vaguely competent. And it's a nice place.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go and listen to what is now mandated as an illegal copy of Close to the Edge...

except its not illegal to go and download a pirated version of the cd from a bay of some description so if they accuse you of copying the cd just say you pirated another copy and your home free.

It's because people that don't understand the subjects are making the laws.

that plus what i presume would be a liberal desemination of cash to influential people so they lobby against it.

I had a look again and couldnt find anything back to the 15/07/2015. There was something about a US judge and cable. Previously this might of been a story because it was deemed legal to copy what you own but this post is because the ruling has been overturned

What next? "You no longer own your house, you are just renting a license for it." and same for cars, computers, etc..?

Who knows, maybe they'll make it illegal to share electricity too!

While I appreciate the news, as I did see it myself earlier on the BBC, this is unfortunately a re-post :/

and now the government is going back on their word? I'm thinking someone paid off someone or did them a questionable favor... (You have to use your brain for that one)

I'm not being funny, but in my house, I have younger brothers and sisters who take my stuff all the time and when I get it back, its all scratched and doesn't work, so I had to get a new copy every freaking time, no more,
I have learned my lesson, I now digitize everything I own.

Something also note worthy, The UK Government is trying to crack down on Online Piracy by increasing prison time to a maximum of 10 years.

Also I have to say on that one is:

Just try and stop it Government. TL;DR: You will never stop online piracy. You shut one site down, 10 more open up seconds later.

FFS UK why do they do this to us?

Because you gave up fundamental freedom in the name of false security called socialism. Now you get cronyism eating away at law and order through your politicians.

They have no intention of enforcing it. It was illegal previously and nobody gave a fuck. It's actually pretty funny, "Basca, the Musicians' Union, and industry representatives UK Music" were trying to get a kickback from the fact copying physical media was made legal, but instead of that happening, it's just been made illegal again. No kickback for them, and literally nothing changes with regards to people's behaviour.

Yes it does. When your own society doesn't value and defend personal liberty, liberties are stripped away all too easily by agents and crafters of your laws. The U.S. is falling into the same trap.
