Was speaking generally the reason people shoot (shot?) medium or large format is because (more) cropping can be done.  Enough to radically change an image. With 35mm cropping often has to be done while shooting (hence “full frame 35mm”) reducing options when printing.  Variable sensor density changes this of course.  With film grain is determined by film stock so the only thing to do is vary the size of the film.  If one is used to shooting 35mm one may get used to cropping in camera so pics tend to be more zoomed in.  Cropping can do amazing stuff though.  I wish I had the example pic I was talking about to act as a visual aid.  It was a B&W of some misician who played the piano.  The original shot was a fairly generic indoor portrait of man with piano. But when cropped it sort of became man is piano and was really cool.  Thing used maybe a fifth of the original negative.

I understand all of that. I do not understand this:

You got to crop in camera to have enough resolution.

35mm wasn’t  the smallest camera film stock but it still wasn’t very large. The smallest medium format was 4 times larger.  Faster film meant larger film grains and the result was at least for a long time there wasn’t enough resolution in a lot of 35mm shots to be able to crop on at all. 110 was even worse.  That often couldn’t be used for production at all.  35mm was generally the smallest format that could be used for production.  My dad had a camera that shot 1/2 110. Photos were always very grainy and could basically never be used for copy.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Yes all that is well known and understood. At this point I don’t think clarification is possible, so, moving swiftly on.

I am getting pretty fucking sick and tired of the "watch something else" responses. It's such a cop out answer because you could say that about basically anything, and it doesn't address the actual complaints. People use it as some kind of card they pull when they can't actually respond to the criticism raised but they still feel like they need to defend some company/person. If you don't like this thread then stop reading it. See how stupid it is? It's basically like telling someone "shut the fuck up". It's not a clever responsive, it doesn't address anything said, and it is rude.

Just got a new lens today. The Rokinon 35mm F2.8. It’s a tiny lens, and on my Sony A7C, can hardly believe there’s a full frame sensor hidden in there. Cheap, sharp, and quite importantly, corrects for barrel distortion well.

Vignette is pretty severe wide open, but is not the worst problem in the world. Chromatic aberration is well controlled at all apertures as well. Would be nice to have some weather sealing though, as I’ll probably get a lot of outdoor use from this thing. The F2.8 apertures is definitely on the Ho-Hum side, but an acceptable tradeoff for the tiny size, and not a big deal on a Sony FF camera.

The image was shot at F5.6, 1/250, ISO 100.

My memory is the cheapass way to do that is with a screw on a1 filter (which is pretty close to clear) a big plastic bag, and some sort of weather sealing goop for the filter/bag connection.

If you had a tripod or other means of supporting the camera, cutting down that ISO and stopping down the aperture (F4-5.6 maybe) would’ve allowed you to get the entire camera in focus.

When doing black and whites, I use some mild color toning. Pure black and white doesn’t look quite natural to my eye, but a slight off-color tone provides enough imperfection thar I feel works. This lens works a treat for street in the daytime.

I’m kind of itching to move to Alaska at some point in the near future. While the politics are not necessarily to my liking (albeit, not near as extreme as Texas), the place itself is quite pretty, and the colder climate is much more to my liking. I know some people there, and there’s mentions of IT jobs and other such work available in the more populated areas

That’s a lovely gradient, and the delicate wisp of moon really adds to it. 9/10, would definitely print.

Saw this during a late-night drive. Wish I minded the window frames more so, but the neighborhood was the very sketchy kind, and hanging around overly long with an expensive camera didn’t seem the best idea. Didn’t even check focus, just snagged a couple shots and left ASAP. Still, though my composition could be better, I like the lighting. might take another whack at it next week with a better plan in mind to deal  account with the window frames.

I like shooting in the more dingy neighborhoods as there’s often a lot of story to tell, and I’d like to do so more. I just don’t do it much as I value not having my stuff stolen.

On a sidenote, a powerful floody flashlight is a godsend to briefly illuminate darkened areas in said sketchy places. My Zebralight is a real MVP.

That's an interesting shot, it has a neat look. In your editing software, try adding some color noise correction, it looks pretty bad and noisy there.

i dont edit my shots.... yet.

That’s a nice shot, and having seen the other ones, the whole set is nice.
