Blacks look black and whites look white.  The photo itself doesn’t seem to be.  I don’t know how accurately it represents the subject matter though.

 

EDIT: wasn’t reacting to the squirrel pic but the butterfly pic.

Sky looks pretty blown out as is the belly of the squirrel which seems plugged up. Can happen with really contrasty stuff.  Cameras just don’t have the same ability to regulate light that eyes do.  I’m not sure this was avoidable if you wanted both.

Shooting anything siluetted against daylight sky is hard.  The sky is basically a light source.  Camera had to work hard probably to get even bark detail.  I’m impressed it looks as good as it does. 
 

re: car pic. Overcast rainy sky’s are great for lighting.  Just before a really big storm can produce outdoor lighting cameras really like.  Rare and sometimes dangerous though

People shoot what they like.  I got a step sister that only does flowers.

Leaves in the foreground are driving me a bit nuts. Doesn’t help that they’re more or less the brightest thing in the shot.  I’d say crop them but they’re so close to the butterfly doing so would leave the butterfly in the lower left of the frame.  Really too bad about those leaves.

Differently focused anyway.   In one the subject is that red thing in the back yard through glass, while in the other it’s the bird. Second one is better because of environment.  No occlusion of the shot and no dirty glass to shoot through.  A good description of what focus can do though.

 

the first is also imperfectly focused even besides the dirty glass issue though perhaps. Shooting through glass windows just has problems.

Well the only thing I could try to correct that is to darken it but I can't do that without making it kinda obvious

Yeah.  It’s a hard one.  Two ways to do photography: make pictures or take pictures. If you take pictures that kind of stuff happens.  Back in the day buying film in bricks was common for picture takers.  A brick was a wrapped section of a case.  I forget how may rolls of film were in one, but a bunch.  Picture makers  get a much much higher shot percentage.  A picture maker would just arrange the foliage so it wasn’t a problem.  Of course the butterfly would also be a pinned lab specimen.

I like the top one over the bottom one just because center composition is usually just for informational stuff.  The bottom one says “this is a mottled pidegeon”to me.  

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.
