And on that topic:

Anyone know where to get some pcie cables for Seasonic PSU on the cheap?

well you can reach out to the source..https://seasonic.com/cable-config

or cable  mod Configurator – CableMod Global Store

would be VERY Careful though getting cheap cables can and does backfire...

Looked at the cable mod stuff and it's looking like the winner. :P 8-pin pig tail is about $30 all in and I e seen a few 750/850W GX going for about $85 locally.

Appreciate it. So the computer, when at full load, is generating enough heat to heat a room? Or was that a joke that they were using their computer to heat their room?

Yes indeed. Electricity here is least expensive in the evenings when it is also the coldest. I'm generating about 2kW of heat doing distributed computing and last year I didn't have to turn my furnace on in our town home until late October. In the spring I got a credit on my gas bill of $170 as their "estimate" of my consumption over the winter was way off.

Most of the systems are in the unfinished portion of the basement and I have a 24" box fan running to move the heat out and upstairs and I run the furnace fan to help things along. Makes the basement the warmest area in the house in winter.

The wife's gaming computer is in our bedroom so that runs all night to keep things hot in the bedroom.

If the kids start complaining their rooms are cold I just tell them to suck it up and fold on their gaming computers. Much nicer than my dad's "too bad - put a sweater on." They each have Radeon 5700xts which do a fine job of keeping their rooms toasty.

If there is one thing I have learned from starting fading this year:

HP is really effective at implementing anti-power virus firmware.

Spun up my HP Victus gaming laptop and the numbers are all over the place.

Not looking good for 3050ti mobile. Refuses outright to draw more than 20W

Edit:

I think doc brown has taken over my laptop and reached 88mph

Edit 2: the bubble has popped. It would appear that 4.42ghz all core 62.88W and 1.456v 5800H brings a 4090 to its knees for about 2 min at a time? And the 3050ti has determined that folding is not a power virus now.

well to off set some folding for a month. doing some mining  on 2 main rigs.

while (its cold atm) seeing 1 said type that a high pay out.... runs cpu/gpu hotter then folding.

i dont mine for a profit. it simple to cover already machine i have cost or to offset a bit of power when it get cold down here.

my ac general uses the most power out of everything in the house.

also using the best heater in the house. would use wasted power compare to pc.

so win win!

Fixed the issue with the GPU of my Razer Blade not wanting to fold for some reason and now it's going.

This will likely absolutely kill the battery. But with the fans at max RPM (5200) it seems to do fine temperature wise.

Now the question remains; do I leave it running and risk to kill the bloody thing or do I shut it down? :s

Turn the fans down to 90%, the last 10% makes very little difference but make a lot more noise and may have more wear on the fans in my experience.

I've been Folding/running other GPU intensive apps continuously on my laptop for a year and 3 months now at this point. Battery wear is just 9% on a one and a half year old laptop. It was 3 or 4% when I got it. Use one of the battery charging limits if you think you'll leave it plugged in for extended periods, even otherwise, your battery will be fine.

Irony is it would probably improve the chipset cooling on my X570 compared to the 3080, as for some bizarre reason they thought putting it right under the GPU was a good idea.  That said, not honestly sure if the graphics card airflow is a good thing given its potentially forcing the chipset fan to move faster.

Was worse when I had the 2080 in there though as being a blower the plastic case almost entirely blocked it.

I mean, if the charger is plugged in most modern laptops barely use the battery when it's plugged in so realistically it shouldn't affect the health is the battery all that much.

It's not like you are deep cycling the battery

That's a chonky boi. These cards are all way too big to fit in my F@H server. I really hope next gen is gonna be a bit more reasonably sized again, or i have to stay on the 3xxx series for ever 😞

That's a chonky boi. These cards are all way too big to fit in my F@H server. I really hope next gen is gonna be a bit more reasonably sized again, or i have to stay on the 3xxx series for ever 😞

That's the reason I picked up a few of the EVGA XC Ultra's from their B-stock before they disappeared forever - 2-slot cards will get hard to find with this generation but it's an artificial limitation as NVIDIA on the GPU side, like AMD on the CPU side, are pushing the power envelope even closer to the edge of instability and way past the optimal efficiency point in an attempt to maintain the lead over competition.

Even the 3000-series operating boost and power limits IMHO are way past the optimal efficiency point but at least with that generation they allow the power-limit to be lowered further than the minimums with the 2000-series.

Still I think Jay pointed out that with only minimal differences in performance between the FE and AIB cards there's not much point going with the AIB cards if your not an FPS snob or HWBot enthusiast. And the FE card will adapt itself nicely to waterblocks and should only be 1-slot with the I/O layout on the rear bracket.

I think the other issue we'll see going forward in the short term is a lack of reasonably priced motherboards with PCIe4 x16/x8 x8 slots with adequate slot spacing for easily running 2 mid to high-tier GPUs in a system. This should be capable with x670 non "E" but when I took a quick look they don't seem to be available. Lots of boards with x16 and x4 off the Chipset which will probably be sufficient but not as future-proof.

As for the Hybrid 4090 GPUs, some initial reviews I've seen show the 240mm Radiators they ship with seem to struggle wit the heat load and get quite hot.

Well, it took just over a week.

I'm impressed, it actually makes my phanteks evolv x case look small.

Hopefully the A770 will arrive next week, along with my bifurcated riser.

Nice - I'd suggest leaving that system's cause preference set to Alzheimer's for a bit to see what it can do with WUs with large atom counts. Unless, of course, you want to get one of those small WUs that will make it look like a 2070 🙂

I'd also be interested to see at what frequency peak efficiency can be found and if it falls even further off the cliff at low frequencies than Ampere does.

That still leaves the stupid levels of tall PCB to deal with though, and then you still have to accomodate waterblock terminals and power cables. All in all these cards are just never going to fit in a 4U rackmount box i'm afraid.
Maybe a 5U chassis would work, but almost no one makes those. Safe from some niche cases or rackmount workstations.
