So I'm looking into getting a business line installed to hopefully sort out my internet issues... We will see 

 

1000/100 would be nice, would prefer a higher upload honestly do will probably take to the guys about that and see if there's anyway to improve that

If its a business package it should be 1000/200, residential packages are capped at 1000/100, at least assuming these are Openreach.

Might be worth checking if there are any alt-nets in your area though, they usually offer symmetrical.

Virgin are expanding their service via fibre now so that might change, though I'd personally choose Openreach over Virgin any day, not least that if you have ISP issues you can just switch to another provider using the same fibre.

My latest GPU has arrived. It's a used RX 580 8GB, and it looks to be in excellent condition. Yes, it came from a mining setup, but as long as it works fine I'll be happy. It also came with a PCIe riser, but I'm not sure if I'll be using that or not.

Like I said, it's virgin or a 6/3 connection so it's a pretty simple choice in my regard

so with this folding event. i will be using a new isp.

old isp 40 mb d/3mb up (if it was not so un stable)

new isp , worst time 100 d(best time 450mb)/50 mb up.

i did have bw issue last event. so that did effect points a little bit.

So it wasn't just the servers?  WUs aren't particularly large and uploading the results seems to top out around 6-7Mbit.  Problem I had last event was servers timing out or not responding at all when trying to send results, not ISP related.

i agree the issue was the servers the files are small but i guess with 3 up that COULD be an issue esp if watching LTT i had a computer at a friends house that had Symetrical 1000/1000 and had the same issues...

Anyone here folding on an M1 Mac? If so, how do you use FAHControl? I've got it running on both of my M1 MacBooks right now (a 13" M1 MacBook Pro (8GB RAM, 8 CPU cores, 8 GPU cores) and a 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro (32GB RAM, 10 CPU cores, 32 GPU cores)), and FAHControl is basically unusable on both of them. They're both folding just fine in the background, and I can control them through the web control page, but FAHControl just keeps updating over and over. 

 

Also, these laptops are getting much different results. The 13" is only reporting ~21K PPD while the 16" is reporting ~127K PPD. Both are folding on 8 CPU cores (the M1 Max has 8 performance and two efficiency cores, and F@h can only use the performance cores, at least by default), so they shouldn't be this far apart. Any thoughts?

I can't remember where its located but I manually changed the config.xml for remote LAN access.

 

However now I'm using Asahi Linux with 115K on a Mac Mini 4 threads and 283K on Macbook 15" M1 Pro 8 threads.

Somewhere around last year's event, the FAHControl and MacOS started hating each other, so the GUI timed out constantly, even after it had connected ok.  There were various tricks to help it, but it still sucked hard.  I ended up doing the swear and fingercross dance enough to get it set how I wanted and then just controlled it via the web interface.  Most of the systems I fold on are Linux though, so at this point, I will probably only ever spin up one mac, maybe, thanks to the POS interface.

I fold on at least three other Macs, and none of those have any issues with FAHControl. Two of them are running macOS Catalina and one is still running macOS High Sierra. The only big difference is that those Macs are Intel based (2011 iMac, 2012 Mac minis) while the problematic machines are Apple silicon based.

Hmm, I guess I'll just have to use remote access then if I want to use FAHControl. Asahi Linux looks promising, but I'm not ready to switch away from macOS for my portable Macs. Other than the issues with Folding@home I really don't have many issues with these laptops. They get incredible battery life, the lack of heat is refreshing, and they're silent in normal operation. I love it.

I'm using Asahi as the primary OS on the Mac Mini now mostly as a seed box and F@H.  Macbook is primarily MacOS but I made a point of getting the 1TB model so I'd have plenty of space to dual-boot.  Asahi doesn't support power management (or speakers, as they don't want to risk blowing them with a bad amp configuration) yet I believe so its definitely not ideal for portable use.

50/10 here on 50 year old buried copper. Lucky if I get 32Mbps down. 10 Up is never a problem and I've never had upload issues with F@H that weren't attributable to the servers at WUSL.

 

Just to taunt me the ILEC here installed Fibre. Only problem is they delivered it at the front of the house and the front of the basement is the finished portion so I'd have to do some major surgery to get it where I need it.

 

Doen't really matter though as I'd never go with them as an ISP again so I'll have to wait until their forced to open up Fibre to competition.

also do remember what ever else is sharing the pipe in the house. dl/up general will affect the overall upload of a file.
