It is here, just in time!

Yeah - my laptop's fan died literally the morning of the first day of the recent Folding sprint and I almost ended up not qualifying for it.

I decided to use my Plex server laptop to fold as well, and not sure when it happened, but the whimpy fan no longer spins to full speed, so it's now an open air device.

I try to keep spares of things like that

I think full speed on it is something like 6k rpm, it only goes to about 3k now even though it's set to "full speed" in the limited bios. In all fairness: it would spin to max at random, and sounded annoyingly like my tinnitus.

Edit: highest temps I've seen on open air have been 58.6C

Sorry, I'm confused. How would folding heat your room?

I have two computers that I'm using for folding. One is my main system with a Ryzen 9 5900X and RTX 2060 Super. The other is my secondary system with an i5 9600K and RX 580. I do undervolt and power limit all of the parts to be more efficient and easier on the components, but even then the two computers draw around 350W of power combined when folding. Over a 24 hour period, that's the equivalent of running a 1500W space heater for 5.6 hours - which is about how long I used to run one to keep my room warm anyway.

So basically, I'm not adding any extra electricity usage, but I'm still donating that electricity and computing time to a good cause.

I am looking for inspiration for multiple GPU folding rigs. Anyone keen on sharing pictures of 3+ cards in their rigs? I'd love to see some!

Note that I don't run my mining chassis anymore. It's a real PITA when the download bug hits as you have to keep reloading the client and reverting all the GPUs to their last checkpoint every time one GPU gets stuck and I'd rather have multiple discreet systems as it gives me more threads for BOINC.

I need a 4090 STAT!  I think I only lost 2 places from the last event and managed to climb back a place, trying to get back to 50th in the group but I suspect staying there is going to be hard.

Is there a way to pull the project list from F@H or LAR to integrate it into my monitoring script?

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) + GL.iNet GL-X3000/ Spitz AX WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)

Just about ready to start the event and I think I lost my 2080.   It seems to run a desktop OK but any kind of folding or stress like furmark and it dies in about a second.  I am going to try swapping it into another system to make sure it isn't the power supply but I don't have a lot of hope.

@Favebook

I have the most ugly DIY setups ever.

View the pictures at your own risk, and I am not responsible for any injuries 😁

As I live on a small Island it is very difficult to get hold of anything out of the norm, getting anything unusual or specialized is a pain in the butt, and to make things worse many venders on the mainland don't like shipping here due to many customs and tax issues. The solutions are, to get lucky sometimes, overpay, or DIY something if possible.

I can't find server frames to sale, so I have made my own in the garage. I can't find any server cases that would be able to hold more than 1 or 2 gpu's, so I made my own.

Originally I made this case to go in my server rack, but I ended up putting it on a different breaker in a spare bathroom that isn't used anymore. The case used to have 3 industrial pc fans that went behind the dust filters on the front of the case, these pushed the air out of a large vent on the rear where the tube is now attached, I have made it so I can switch easily switch between the tubing and the vent in case I want to mount it back in the rack.

Now the case has no fans, just a centrifugal fan that draws air though the case and straight out of the window. Please forgive the lack a cable management, pretty much the only place to put them is where they are, they are tied down so they don't move, I also had to mount a second psu on the back so I can run all the cards at full power if I wish.

Example of mine in a link on my signature. Although the pics are a bit dated, the ‘mining’ chassis (never mined a day in my life) has a 3070ti, 3070, and a 3060ti at the moment.

Not much of a Gamer….. But I have thing about F@H that may be a little over the top.   See my builds here

@Favebook

I also have a system with 3x 6600 xt's, 2x 1050's, and a 6650 xt. This system uses a mining motherboard and pcie 1x risers.

Fortunately it seems that these cards are not adversely affected by the lack of pice lanes and score around the average ppd according to lars's database, scoring over 6 million ppd.

image.thumb.jpeg.157713730bd0cc38ae7506c5c172d369.jpeg

Hopefully this week I will get the parts I need to finish another 5 gpu rig using bifurcated risers like the ones in my bathroom rig.

Thermals ok?  Could be a paste issue or memory heat issue if the TIM gave it up.

It could also be a VRM issue, when it hits a higher p-state the card would turn on more power stages and that could be where the issue is

There's just something about being in the top 50 that puts a smile on your face.

I am looking for inspiration for multiple GPU folding rigs. Anyone keen on sharing pictures of 3+ cards in their rigs? I'd love to see some!

And the hot second ITNOS had three cards in it, before the 970 + 750ti were replaced with a second 1070ti

Thermals ok?  Could be a paste issue or memory heat issue if the TIM gave it up.

Yea, they seem to be good.  a cold card can have a crash very quickly, it would have to have really given up totally.

It could also be a VRM issue, when it hits a higher p-state the card would turn on more power stages and that could be where the issue is

I figure if I verify that it is 100% the video card I will take it apart and see if there is something I can replace.

My best hope at this point is I have a bad power supply.
