Backing up and recovering encrypted files related questions

Something I have been wondering about is how to properly back up and later recover files I've encrypted using an at rest encryption program like Amarok. Do I have to decrypt the encrypted files for a backup to catch them, or can I do something like capture the files in their encrypted form, reinstall Amarok after a disaster (or on a new machine) and then restore the encrypted files as if nothing was different, using Amarok on the new system to open them again? Typcially, my idea of data security was to keep sensitive files external to the system, or on an air gapped machine due to not finding how to get encrypted files back.
