looks like 3090 it is as they are almost 1/3-1/2 the cost of latest gen and waterblocks are easy and ready to ship

I've seen some RX 580s around that price on eBay. My most recent purchase was an 8GB RX 580 for $100 from eBay, and it came with a PCIe riser (both parts + the cable to connect them). Definitely a much better price than the $170 I paid for the 8GB RX 570 I bought back in June. To be fair the 570 was brand new in the box, but still...

I could be wrong, but I don't think so. F@h isn't super bandwidth intensive, so a riser shouldn't make much of a difference if that's what you're asking. I only just started using a single PCIe riser a couple days ago, and it's in an old PCIe 2.0 system. I'm running my Nvidia Quadro M4000 (single slot GM204-based card with 8GB of VRAM) through that riser, so it only has a single PCIe 2.0 lane to work with. So far it doesn't seem to be doing any worse than when it had a full 16 lanes available, though I haven't tested any faster cards than that yet.

For larger cards (2070s & up) you want at least PCIe3x4 or they will start decreasing in performance. Generally using PCIex1 mining risers you will see some degradation in performance. The more performant the card the higher the impact. Windows tends to be more chatty on the PCIe bus than Linux so is more impacted.

Perfect. So I could potentially swipe a cheap 1070, put it in the main slot, then put the 480 in the x4 slot. And power shouldn't be an issue if my PSU was able to run that 3080 in the PC Tech support challenge. 

Also running into eh issue of my 480 not putting out enough heat to be a space heater, the single pane windows here are doing such a good job with radiant cold that the air coming out of the blower is only mildly warmer than the ambient.

The shroud on my 480 is barely even warm to the touch. It's 36C. I'M 36C. 

Ambient is 16C, direct from the cooler is 37C.

It needs some cancer folds.

Getting NVIDIA and AMD drivers to play nicely under Windoze can be challenging. I run a 2060super and a FirePro W4100 in my Win 10 Pro Daily driver, the FirePro for Display output and the 2060s for Distributed Computing (BOINC & Folding@Home). If memory serves I had to futz around a bit and DDU a few times to get them playing nicely.

There shouldn't be any issues with two consumer oriented cards in the same system. I've had issues with Quadro drivers and AMD Radeon drivers, but I've run plenty of systems with both GeForce and Radeon drivers installed. F@h usually works fine with both.

Agreed, the dual drivers in my gaming laptop get along just fine with AMD integrated and Nvidia dedicated

Many of us are using our PCs to heat the room, in a smaller house with a bit of airflow you can keep the entire house from getting too cold, even if not necessarily warm (depending on your house insulation).

200W of folding keeps my 850sqft apt at liveable (18-19C, closer to 18 if the sun isn't out)

idk but i plan on getting a Diamond Ring By the time the event starts...Assuming @TVwazhere Doesn't Raise the Requirements 1 week before I hit it like he did last time .

Oh no, it's absolutely not a joke. Seriously, it's actually what a lot of us do during the winter months. Last winter I hardly used my furnace, and when I did it was only for a short while. I use the heat to heat up certain rooms, and I have one system in a general area that spreads heat around. It's actually very comfortable.

They did promise not to, but then I don't think anyone was expecting the 4090 to be as powerful as it is.

 

Ultimately the point is to reserve it for people who contributed a lot to the project/team which is still the case even if you used a beastly card to get there, the change was because lower cards were starting to reach it too quickly.

my guess would be when the top 100 are Diamond it will shift again. Or create a new badge...

Yeah, I remember how the points used to be. My old account has the bronze badge despite only having 1.4 million points. I got those points back in 2017, primarilly with a single Core 2 Duo desktop.
